Year of Mission At the beginning of a New Year, we often make resolutions. Perhaps they are to lose weight or eat more healthily. Perhaps it is to give up alcohol or smoking or chocolate or to do more exercise or to read more. We often hear of people making resolutions - though sometimes they can be hard to keep going beyond January and often we fail! A New Year seems like a natural time to focus upon what is important and to regain focus. Over the past few months, the Kirk Session has been discussing making 2017 a 'Year of Mission' for West Kilbride Parish Church. You don't have to delve too deeply into our newspapers or on the news online to see that the Church of Scotland and the church in Scotland generally is struggling. I shared at a recent service that since the year 2000, the membership of the Church of Scotland has declined from 600,000 to around 330,000. That is a steep decline! Although in West Kilbride we are fairly vibrant at the moment, it is important that we don't rest on our laurels and stick our heads in the sand and presume that we will be ok. To this end, the Kirk Session has agreed to make 2017 a 'Year of Mission'. After the resurrection in Matthew 28, Jesus gives the disciples a commission often referred to as 'The Great Commission'. Jesus told the disciples to 'Go and make disciples'. This call to the first disciples remains our calling too. And so, throughout this year we are going to have a 'Year of Mission' to try to engage with Jesus' calling and in the face of the challenging circumstances in the church at this present time. This is not to say that this year will solve all our problems, but it may be a stepping stone in helping us to grasp the reality of the situation we find ourselves in. Page 3

So what is planned for this year? The first thing is prayer. We recognise that we cannot do this in our own strength, but we must look towards the Lord for his leading and guiding. Over this year, we will be holding a number of days of prayer to pray for the church and community. As it says in the Psalms: 'Unless the Lord builds the house, the labourers labour in vain.' We also encourage the congregation to pray for up to five people who are not part of the church and who are not Christians throughout the year, and a bookmark has been produced toward this end. Secondly, we plan to engage with all members of the congregation. We currently have over 430 on the church roll, but clearly not all of them are actively involved in the church. We will be inviting each member of the congregation to a coffee morning (the roll has been split up into 10 groups) to try to engage especially with those who don't come to church and to ask them why this might be, what things we could improve in the church and to try to encourage them in their faith journey. Please look out for your invite! Thirdly, we plan to make our services on a Sunday morning more gospel focussed. There is much value in studying God's Word in all its parts, but it is unlikely that we would invite a friend or neighbour to a service that we know is going to be focussed upon a difficult passage in Leviticus! To this end, our morning service will try to be more overtly evangelistic to encourage us to invite neighbours and friends to a service that might be appropriate for them. Fourthly, there will be a number of other things happening this year. The Mission and Discipleship Team is looking to organise some kind of 'Mission Week'; the Worship Team are hoping to have a couple of outreach services in the Village Hall, again we hope to run the ALPHA Course and encourage follow up groups. The Youth Team will continue the excellent work with Messy Church. Page 4

As I said above, what we do this year is not the be-all and end-all. But it may help us to take seriously what is happening in the church and to live out the calling that Jesus has given to each one of us. It isn't about making our church look good, it is all about glorifying God, and encouraging others into the Kingdom. Can I encourage you to pray? Please do pray for our own congregation, but please also pray for the church in our nation at this time that the Lord would revive His church - and all the glory would be His. And let us all be encouraged! After all, we believe in the God of the resurrection! Yours in Christ, James PS - Church Conference 2017! Our Church Conference this year will be 17th -19th February. Our speaker will be Dr. Stuart Weir, National Director of CARE. Stuart will be speaking about issues of justice on Friday and Saturday, and we will be having our usual Sunday Services. Please do put the dates in your diary! Page 5

EDITORIAL Once again the Christmas tree is down and the decorations put away for eleven months. We are at the beginning of a new year and we do not know what lies ahead. I love the saying, "Yesterday is History, tomorrow is a Mystery, but today is a Gift and that is why we call it the Present!" We cannot change what God has planned for us, all we can do is make every day matter and live as God would want us to live. The Kirk Session has agreed that 2017 will be the Year of Mission for our church. I am excited at the opportunities that this will bring, and I hope that you are too. I no longer make New Year resolutions but, instead, I decide on goals that I would like to achieve. One of these is to pray, for the year, for five non-christian friends in West Kilbride. Will you do the same? As we know, prayer changes things!! You are all so wonderfully generous, as four of the articles inside will testify. You have generously given money for Tearfund through the little boxes, gifts to fill shoeboxes for the Blythswood Appeal, gifts for local needy children through the Christmas Gift Service and you have been knitting for refugees through Knit For Peace. Your donations for the Food Bank are also greatly needed and appreciated. Please keep up the good work! I am World Church Vice-Convener on the Mission Committee of Presbytery and, God willing, in April I will be going to Malawi with three other members of Presbytery. We will be visiting the churches in Malala Presbytery, with the aim of trying to encourage churches here to twin with churches there. St John's Church in Largs has twinned with one of the churches in Malala for a few years now and this has proved to be a blessing to both churches. I am hoping to take some small items, such as pencils, etc, with me that will be of use to the people out there and may also do a bit of fundraising for mosquito nets which can be bought in Malawi. Please pray for me and the others going with me. Deirdre Murray Page 7

Session Snippets The Kirk Session met on Monday 12 th December. The meeting started with opening devotions. The Bible reading was the story of The Three Wise Men taken from St Mathew s Gospel Ch 2. The main theme of the meeting was thoughts and plans for the forth coming year The Session agreed that we should have a theme of evangelism for the coming year with a particular emphasis on reaching young people in the village. Thus a Year of Mission with various events such as coffee mornings and also a general effort to publicise our mission. To this end it was considered that we should not be half hearted about this, but consider spending a significant amount of money on this aim. It was agreed to set a budget of up to five thousand pounds. Some of this money could be available from Presbytery. A not unrelated fact is that the Church Roll is falling and now stands at four hundred and thirty. The uncomfortable fact is that more members are leaving than new members joining in any given year. The knock on effect of this, and an ageing congregation with less disposable income than previously, is that regular offerings are diminishing. Although this is not critical at present, in the words of our finance convenor John Coy, after mandatory expenses there is not much left for anything unusual. Session did however agree in line with previous custom to have retiring offerings at Christmas and New Year for a foreign based charity and a more local charity. Thus it was agreed to collect for a refugee charity and Glasgow City Mission. Page 8

As part of a rolling plan of Stewardship it was agreed that this year the church should encourage members to give an appropriate part of their time to their church and its mission. There was a discussion particularly focusing on the Pastoral Team and how it can be made easier for them or anyone to ask about and discuss spiritual matters. It can take great skill to gain a person s confidence enabling someone to open up. However it can be of great value and benefit to both parties. The Session concluded its meeting with the saying of The Grace. Richard de Courcy Christmas Gifts I am so grateful for all the lovely gifts donated at our Christmas Gift Service. Last year we gave gifts to the two Syrian refugee families, nine children and three adults, who had been housed in Stevenston just the month before Christmas and they were very gratefully received. This year I contacted the liaison person for the families and told him that we would, once again, like to give gifts to the children. I was very surprised to be told that there are now 11 Syrian families, with 36 children, living in the Three Towns. Armed with a list of ages and sexes of the children, a small band of us chose gifts from the donations and wrapped them, ready to be uplifted and taken to the families. Page 9

I also wrote Christmas cards from "West Kilbride Parish Church Family" for each family. I was told that the families were overjoyed at the kindness of people from a Christian church giving them gifts and couldn't understand why we did it. Luckily, the man who does the liaison with the families is a Christian and he explained that we do it because we want to give to others to celebrate Christ's birth. Needless to say, the children did not know about waiting to open their gifts on Christmas Day and they were opened as soon as they got them - much to their great delight! Brian and I took the remaining five sacks of gifts to the Food Bank, where they were wrapping gifts for Santa to give to the children of families who use the Food Bank, at their Christmas party. They were preparing gifts for around 85 children and other churches had also donated gifts. Any surplice they had were going to Social Work to be given out by them. Thanks to your generosity many children, who may have had nothing, had gifts this Christmas. Bless you all. Deirdre Murray Page 10

Blythswood Shoeboxes The Sequel. I received a thank you letter from Fraser Hutchison the Blythswood co-ordinator for Southwest Scotland. He said that from this area 4,500 boxes were sent to Moldova and a further 1,900 to Romania. More than 10,000 was donated to help with the huge cost of transportation. (I was really delighted that 500 of this came from West Kilbride because I felt very strongly that this money was needed to help with this cost and had been provided specifically for this purpose.) The Rev. Neil Urquhart from Fullerton Church in Irvine blessed the shoeboxes and focussed on the anticipated joy that the recipients of the gifts would experience and the hope they would see Christ s hand in it all. Fraser finished by saying, Thank you specifically for providing a total of 160 filled shoeboxes and 500. Please forward grateful thanks to all involved at West Kilbride for making this year s Appeal so successful. Press Release A ten year old boy with special needs, living in a remote village in central Romania, has become the two-millionth person to receive a gift box from Blythswood Care s annual Shoebox Appeal. The youngest in a family of nine children, Ionut has Down s syndrome requiring his mother to accompany him to school. As his father is unable to secure permanent employment in their area, the family depends on social security payments from the Romanian government, which remain very low. Page 11

The first Blythswood Care Shoebox Appeal took place in 1993 resulting in 300 boxes being delivered to Romania and Albania. This year the Highland-based charity has sent 121,474 boxes to eight countries in Europe and to Pakistan. The Order of Service has been written by Christian women of The Philippines. This year the focus is on Matthew 20 v 1 16, the parable of the labourers in the vineyard and asks the question, Am I being unfair to You? Women, men and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer. Services begin in the Pacific and follow the sun across the globe. Please join with us to sing, pray, learn about and support victims of poverty, violence and injustice in The Philippines. Afterwards we hope you will join us for a cup of tea or coffee. Fundraising Events Laura Alexander and I are organising 2 fundraising events, one in February and one in March. The first in February is a "Swishing" evening ( clothes swop) a great idea to declutter your wardrobe and benefit others, (more details of how it works nearer the time!). It will be in aid of the Ayrshire Hospice and will take place at South Banks House, Portencross on the evening of Friday the 17th of February from Supper is included in the price of 10 but bring your own drinks. Tickets available from Audrey and Laura (limited numbers). Telephone or for details. The second is the very popular Spring coffee morning at South Banks House in aid of Portencross Castle on Saturday the 18th of March from 10.30am-1.00pm. A great way to spend the morning catching up with old friends and enjoying home baking, real coffee and warming open fires. Audrey Kolon Page 19

KNIT FOR PEACE Dear West Kilbride Parish Church, I am delighted to say that we have received your wonderful knitted donations. We look forward to delivering the knitted items, as they will undoubtedly make a big difference to those in need. Thank you for your support, we truly appreciate it. Your donations have a great impact on the communities where they are sent, not only do they provide much needed warmth, but the recipients are always so touched by the time and effort that you put into making these items. Thank you once again for your support. We couldn't do our work without the generosity of knitters like you. For the latest information from Knit for Peace, remember to sign up to our e-newsletter and follow us on Twitter! You can also support our projects through the Good Gifts Catalogue by following the link at the bottom of this . Warm wishes from the whole team Barbara Correias I am most grateful to Laura and Donald Mackay for taking over the work of looking after the church garden. I am sure they will do it well, although there is more work involved than appears to be the case at the moment. I do appreciate very much their kind offer. Thank you both. I also wish to express my grateful thanks to Alison Coy, aided by her husband John, for being willing to take on the work of Tearfund. I do hope you will all support her as much as you have done when I looked after it, aided by Crawford who counted the coins for me. All of you who collected in the small boxes have helped many people over the years. Thank you so much. Audrey Brown. Page 20

TEARFUND In response to my letter with a cheque for 300 from our donations, Lynne Paterson wrote back: Right now, your gift of 300 is helping to change lives all around the world. Your generosity is helping to bring hoe to people whose lives have been affected by hunger and poverty. Without you, none of this work would be possible so, thank you. Husein lives in Chiras, Afghanistan with his wife and eight children. After spending years as refugees in Pakistan, when they returned to Chiras, life was exceedingly hard. We had to start all over again, Husein, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, explains. we could hardly provide the daily needs for our families Husein became too old and weak to climb the mountains for wood and without an alternative livelihood, their situation seemed hopeless. Thanks to the support and prayers of people like you, Tearfund partner, Serve Afghanistan, was able to help. They gave one goat to each of the 50 poorest families in the village, along with training in animal care and using goat s milk. A year later, Husein s goat gave birth to two baby goas. One was given back to the project, while Husein kept the other. My goat then gave birth again, says Husein proudly. Page 21

Today, he has 11 goats and one billy goat to hire out for breeding. Importantly, Husein and the villagers know that, although initially supported by Serve Afghanistan, they have worked through the problems of poverty thenselves, and they are now leading the programme. Praise God for this wonderful story of hope and transformation, and thank you for your support. Yours in Christ Lynne Paterson. As you have read, because of our donations, we can help to support people like Husein and others. Please keep filling those little boxes. Thank you! Alison Coy CHANGE OF DETAILS To all West Kilbride Parish Church members - If your contact details (your address, phone number, address etc) have changed recently during 2016 and didn't let the office know, can you please take and complete a 'Change of Details' form from the back of the church, and return it to the Church Office, West Kilbride Parish Church, Main Street, KA23 9AW. This will help us to keep our Church Roll Record up to date. Thank you. Page 22
