Our Annual Rummage Sale Fundraiser September 12 & 13 You may bring in your donations and leave them in the senior high room downstairs. Any large items please make arrangements with Amy to leave in the church garage. Help will be needed on Sunday, September 7 following the service to bring all the collected items from downstairs to the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to stay and help!!! THANK YOU to everyone who signed up to help with the set-up and the Sale!!! We still need more people for Saturday, September 13 during and for tear down and clean-up. Tables need to be arranged and chairs put out for the Brunch Buffet the next day. Please sign up if you can help!!!!!! Community Brunch Buffet Fundraiser Twins Restaurant, who caters our wedding receptions here, is interested in offering a monthly brunch buffet to our members and to the community, here in our Fellowship Hall. Twins will do most of the work, but will need a couple of our people to help during and with clean-up. They will split the proceeds with us, after the cost of the food. This will be a GREAT way to raise money for our many needs, and a wonderful time for fellowship after the service! The first one will be on Sunday, September 14, from 11 am until 2 pm. This will be in place of the Fall Kick-Off Breakfast we have every year. Members will NOT have to pay for this first one, but we do ask you to make a donation towards the cost of the food which the church will help pay for. Baskets will be on the tables. Please plan to come and bring your family and friends! CROP Walk The 2014 CROP Walk is Sunday, September 28 at 1:30 pm at Presque Isle, Beach One. If we participate, our church will receive a portion of the proceeds for our Food Pantry, which is about $500. We encourage you to take part, and help raise money for the hungry. Money is raised by sponsorship. If you don t wish to walk, please make a donation. There is a sign-up sheet on the information table in the Lobby. Sponsor sheets & collection envelopes will be given out in the near future. Greeting Cards There are year-round and Christmas greeting cards on a table in the Lobby. Packs are $5. Money raised from selling these will go towards the needs of our church. Page 3

In a Different Voice (a monthly column written by Judith Johnston) Strange, interesting, weird, charming, scary as America becomes increasingly diverse, we are confronted by more & more people whose ways are not our ways. Yet, God seems to have spoken to his children in many different places at very different times. Some of these diverse views will be featured each month to encourage a healthy curiosity about other spiritual writings and to open us up to possibilities for a larger spiritual awareness. When we consider all of these ideas together, a most beautiful vision emerges of the place in native American spiritual conception of what we call death, the dissolution of the physical body: it is a mere transition of our real self to other and wider arenas of life and consciousness. Consciousness, then, does not die but endures as part of the unity of all life, the relationship of all living creatures as kindred beings moving in association through the great Tree. From a Navajo saying that "Man is Made From Everything." For the Maoris of New Zealand death was represented as a journey. In common with many such beliefs, it included crossing a river. A key hope and expectation was that of reunion with family and friends who had gone before. For traditional Australian aborigines, the spirit world was closely interwoven with the physical world, so the transition between one and the other was explained in terms of traditional relationships with the land. Death marked the end of the physical life only, with the spirit then released to rejoin the spirits of ancestors, and of the features of the land itself. The final goal of salvation in Hinduism is escape from the endless round of birth, death, and rebirth. That can mean an eternal resting place for the individual personality in the arms of a loving, personal God. Muslims recognize that different individuals have been given different abilities and various degrees of insight into the truth. Each man will be judged according to his situation, and every man who lives according to the truth to the best of his abilities will achieve heaven. The notion of individual salvation and heavenly existence is not prominent in Judaism. Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham s bosom; Luke 16:22 Page 5

Crusader Hymns and Hymn Stories by The Billy Graham Team Previously published in this church newsletter, it has been re-submitted in light of the many families who are grieving the loss of a loved one or are anticipating a loss in the near future, as indicated by the many prayer requests on our prayer chain. Many of these hymns abound with words of comfort through this pain, and reassurances that our loved ones are, or will be, free from pain and await a joyous reunion with us. Everyone has fantasized finding a hidden treasure, this writer no exception. This Christ-centered treasure, property of my late mother, recently surfaced. And what a gift it is. Published in 1966 and still available on line (the edition with the family reading in front of the fireplace on the cover), it contains 52 hymns with accompanying stories about each hymn, its origin, or a brief biography of the composer, or an inspirational message about the focus of the hymn. These stories and the hymns are a beautiful source for daily devotions. What an uplifting way to start the day (instead of the morning news) rich reflections on the depth of God s love, the amazing sacrifice of Jesus, the comfort of the Holy Spirit-- for all for us, the broken and the fallen--and the triumphant life we can have if we believe and live the message. Even if one doesn t sing, just reading the lyrics brightens the day. I need no other argument, I need no other plea. It is enough that Jesus died, And that He did for me. Judith Johnston Page 6

Nursery Help Needed!!! Help is needed in the Nursery during the worship service. If there is no help there is NO NURSERY. There is a chart on the bulletin board outside the Sanctuary. Please sign up by the date you can help. THANK YOU!! Homemade Laundry Soap Bob O Connell has been making homemade laundry soap for our Food Pantry clients. He has been collecting milk jugs. However, some of them have been leaking, so he now needs used laundry soap containers, which are more durable. Please bring in your containers!!!!!! Thank you!!! Hoss s Fundraiser Day We will once again have a Fundraiser Day at Hoss s on Sunday, September 21. You can go there for lunch, or dinner! We will earn 20% of everything above $300 in total pre-tax food and beverage sales. There is a sign-up sheet on the information table in the Lobby. Not only can we help raise money for our many needs, but enjoy good food and fellowship as well! Jim Rimmer Many of you know Jim Rimmer, who is Pastor of both Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cranesville, and Lake City Presbyterian Church. He is also very involved with Koinonia. He is retiring, and his churches are having an Open House Retirement Party in honor of him here in our Fellowship Hall on Sunday, September 28, from 3-6 pm. If any members of our church would like to come, please call Amy and let her know by September 14. They need to know how much food to provide! The Daniel Plan Penny Qualls will once again be offering The Daniel Plan, beginning Wednesday, September 24, at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. The first meal will be provided. This class will run through November. There is a sign-up sheet on the information table in the Lobby. If anyone has any questions, feel free to call Penny at or her at plq@ennyqualls.com. Page 7

Editor s Page I learned something last night: The trip from Hamot Hospital to Fairview goes really quickly at 2:30 am when there are very few cars and a string of green lights! Mike began feeling poorly late Saturday night after our dinner at a restaurant on 12 th street in Millcreek. On Sunday he got progressively worse until about 11:00 pm he decided he needed to go to the hospital. The emergency room was unbelievably crowded. There was a woman there with two other adults and a child who was about 7. This woman was swearing a blue streak! Here she was holding this sick little boy and every fifth word was a swear word, including one I really hate. It was really disturbing. Poor Mike was really sick to his stomach and had a pain in his stomach which they finally diagnosed as a blockage. When the doctor came in to see Mike, he introduced himself as Chris Cammarata! When we asked him if he was related to Chuck he said he was his cousin! I had no idea Chuck has a doctor-cousin much less one in Erie! After the CAT scan, the doctors decided to admit Mike so he was taken to a room; this morning things seemed to have resolved themselves, so he was discharged. Actually, he signed himself out and called me to come and get him. Neither one of us had had more than a coupl couple of hours of sleep, so we were both a little out of it. But he s feeling much better now; so much so that he is actually at work! I must say that I, on the other hand, am a bit rough around the edges and don t have much energy. Without my usual 8 to 10 hours of sleep, I m just dragging. I spoke with Jenna yesterday and she was telling me that she has been making it a point of going to the beach on the Mediterranean Sea more often. It s only a five minute walk from her apartment, so she goes there to see the sunset. Unfortunately she now is in a position to see and hear rockets being fired into Israel from Palestine. I have to say, this is making me a little crazy. She seems to be taking it all in stride, but Mike and I are not too happy about it, to say the least. Thankfully, Jenna calls us every day or every other day to keep us updated on her situation in regards to the war. It helps calm us down, but has the unwelcome benefit of having it right in our face so frequently. I d rather she call and share news than just assume we re getting accurate information, though. My imagination can certainly make things look worse than they are. Happy September! Barb Mucciarone Page 11
