We wish to use these prayers at the beginning of worship, so the tone should be one of praise to God. The worship staff can assist you in refining your prayer and, as you surely understand, reserves the right to use or not use any writing submitted. If you attend FirstLight our goal will be to use your prayer at that service; if you attend 11AM, likewise. The language should be appropriate for corporate worship inclusive of an inter-generational congregation. The prayer of praise generally is a liturgist-led prayer, so submissions should use that format, though other formats are possible. Speak to Mike Barker or Shannon Kershner for more information Secondly, photographers, consider submitting images that are reflective of the images in any of the beatitudes. We would like to incorporate these into the projection FirstLight as either interpretive pieces, or back-ground images. Again, the worship staff needs to reserve the right to not use a given submission. Submissions need to be in high-resolution electronic format. Speak to Mike Barker or Shannon Kershner to discuss your interest and the composition of your image.

I want to thank you wonderful people of our congregation for your loving support of our family throughout these days of our recent separation from my beloved Ann. Thank you all for your many loving kindnesses, which have helped us much to bear up under our loss until we are all reunited with joy, before God s glorious throne together with other loved ones who have gone before us. God bless you all. Ken Scott Thank you for the many evidences of your love and prayers. Laura Williams The Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry Team is grateful for your continual food donations. During the first half of 2010 there has been an increase of 500 client services provided. However, that number is less than the same time last year. We appreciate your support. Your gift to Hand in Hand will provide for at least eight students in our valley with basic items for starting school. Thank you so much for your continued support. Thank you for your contribution in support of those that Helpmate serves and for your congregation s leadership around this issue! Thank you for your recent gift to Presbyterian Home for Children. You are an important partner in our ministry. A one-page addition to the Church Pictorial Directory showing our newest members can be picked up from the volunteer s desk in the Narthex. The Church House is in great need of a refrigerator. Anyone who would like to donate a functioning refrigerator, please call the church office. We will take care of the rest. THANK YOU!
4 Volunteer Training for Homeless Shelter (This is an excerpt from an article in Black Mountain News on August 18, 2010) Three training dates have been scheduled for those who have volunteered to staff the temporary homeless shelter this winter. The one hour sessions will be held at 7 p.m. on September 7, 13, and 27 at the First Baptist Church on Montreat Road. The Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry strongly urges volunteers to attend one of these sessions. Training will cover policies and procedures and screening guests. About 30 people have thus far expressed an interest in volunteering for overnight supervision. Since it s possible that the shelter could be open for many consecutive days, should weather conditions warrant, the Ministry feels many more are needed. Supervision of overnight guests would require at least two volunteers per shift, with shifts of 4:45 p.m.-midnight and midnight-7 a.m. planned. Anyone wishing to become a shelter volunteer or to donate food or other services should call Renae Brame at or Bill Walker at The Chaplaincy Committee of the Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women Invites you to their Annual Luncheon Celebrating Eleven Years of Chaplaincy Care For Women in Prison Wednesday, September 29, at 12 Noon Assembly Inn, Montreat $40 per person -- $30 tax deductible $10 to sponsor SCCW Dance Team Member $100 per Patron $200 per Sustainer Silent Auction of Art from the Swannanoa Valley begins at 11AM. Program includes SCCW Dance Team and Rev. Carol Dalton, Chaplain of SCCW. This event benefits the Ministry of Hope, providing chaplains on staff for the women of SCCW. For reservations please call Peggy Ann Frank at The annual Biblical Perspectives picnic will be September 16th at 5:30 at Birdwood Cottage in Montreat. A member of our congregation is in need of transportation, an older vehicle, either a car or a pickup. If you have one to donate or if you have one for a very modest price, please contact Lisbet Chrisman at
5 Critical Need There is a critical need for blood donors now. In fact, someone is counting on you at this very moment to give the gift of life. All blood types are needed, but type O negative donors can make the difference between an adequate blood supply and a shortage. Please give blood as soon as you can. Make and keep your appointment to donate today. Call RED CROSS ( ) or visit redcrossblood.org. Japan Land of the Rising Sun Dear Family and Friends, I would like to thank you for contributing to my trip to Japan. It really was a blast. I would like to share a piece of my adventure with you. First, I want you to know the people are extremely nice and I felt very safe. I was in Hiroshima to meet one of the survivors of the atomic bomb. She was so sweet. She talked about where it happened and how close she was to the explosion. She made me cry three times, the story was so tragic. This part of the trip showed how important it is to have world peace and to consider other options. One day I would like you to see Japan. It was the best experience of my life. Thank you so much again, MiKayla A. Atwood Presbyterian Women The Coordinating Team will meet on August 31, 3:30 p.m. at the church. Bible Moderators for September will meet on August 31, 2:30 p.m. at the church with Florence Shelor. She will cover the introduction and Lesson 1. Any PW who plan to teach during the year are encouraged to attend Florence s introduction lesson. Circles meet Tuesday, September 7.
