2 Welcome THE ROYAL SCHOOL OF CHURCH MUSIC Registered Charity No Company Registration No The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EB T F E voluntary@rscm.com W Front cover photograph: Shutterstock The Network editor: Cathy Markall Printed in Wales by Stephens & George Ltd Please note that the deadline for submissions to the next edition of The Network is 1 January ABOUT THE RSCM The RSCM is a charity committed particularly to promoting the study, practice and improvement of music in Christian worship. It is an open, life-long learning organization, offering face-to-face and distance education and training through its programmes, published resources, courses and activities. The RSCM is sustained by thousands of members, volunteers and donors worldwide. For information about membership benefits, membership@rscm.com. To make a charitable or legacy contribution, contact development@rscm.com, phone , or visit The Network is the RSCM s quarterly guide to hundreds of events each year in the British Isles. These events, which cover education and training, worship, encouragement and communication of the RSCM s programmes and principles, are designed for church musicians in a wide range of situations. Please join us and bring a friend. Church musicians too often work alone or in one place. In these events we gather as a community and share the joy of music in worship together. Several events this quarter are based on music for the seasons and feasts of the Church s year. From Epiphany festivals and events in Devon, Gloucester and Oxford and Candlemas repertoire in the Coventry & Warwickshire and Portsmouth Areas to Passiontide music in Sunderland, there are many ways to learn new music. Alan Bullard is also introducing his flexible anthem resources in Taunton, while Piers Maxim explores our new publication All Glorious Above in Worcestershire. You can find out about Voice for Life resources and training singers for awards at several venues. For award holders there are services in Dublin and Peterborough. Miles Quick explores congregational and instrumental resources in Dorset and Cheshire, and Helen Bent teaches Strengthen for Service in Leeds. This inspirational threeday course offers clergy and lay ministers the context for supporting and embracing music in worship, working positively with their musicians: why not suggest it to someone in your church? There are events for young people in Harrogate, Newcastle and Oxford. Singers may like to find out about singing gospel music in Derby Cathedral with Ken Burton, while Peter Nardone, always informative and entertaining, holds A Musical MOT on voice production. And there are just a few opportunities to sing Stainer s The Crucifixion! Andrew Reid, RSCM Director

TRAINING VISITS AT YOUR OWN CHURCH Costs are subsidized heavily; the inviting church would recruit attendees, collect attendance fees, supply venue/refreshments, and pay the RSCM one payment for the day-rate and actual travel for the tutor. We supply a list of equipment you need to provide and RSCM publicity materials, and we check for clash avoidance with nearby RSCM events. To enquire further please contact education@rscm.com RSCM Education staff are available to visit and deliver customized training to your church, in the areas of choral training, congregational and instrumental music, and ministerial training. 18 The Network
