1 THE NETWORK RSCM events in your local area December 2017 April 2018

2 Welcome THE ROYAL SCHOOL OF CHURCH MUSIC Registered Charity No Company Registration No The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EB T F E voluntary@rscm.com W Front cover photo: Advent wreath. shutterstock.com The Network editor: Cathy Markall Printed in Wales by Stephens & George Ltd Please note that the deadline for submissions to the next edition of The Network is 1 January ABOUT THE RSCM The RSCM is a charity committed particularly to promoting the study, practice and improvement of music in Christian worship. It is an open, life-long learning organization, offering face-to-face and distance education and training through its programmes, published resources, courses and activities. The RSCM is sustained by thousands of members, volunteers and donors worldwide. For information about membership benefits, membership@rscm.com. To make a charitable or legacy contribution, contact development@rscm.com, phone , or visit Looking through The Network provides a window on the RSCM at work in the range and scope of churches we serve. It s encouraging to see innovative and peace-making events such as the Ecumenical Liturgy in Dublin for Christian Aid Week alongside many classic gatherings to sing The Crucifixion or to meet for a Come and Sing. Large gatherings presuppose many churches active in music-making and many of them are composed of very small groups. True to the belief that value is not equated with complexity or size, but with integrity, there are chances to learn music spanning a thousand years or more which was always intended for use in this context. The plethora of worship styles and formats available can be bewildering, but those who attend a Strengthen for Service course (page 6) will find that it illuminates and underpins their ministries, ordained or lay, in a fascinating and supportive way. Not in The Network but from the same source, look out for Helen Bent s Inspiring Music in Worship very soon. This is a tool which looks like a book: guided conversations for churches to determine their own way through the maze of music/ worship, grounded in prayer, scripture and experience. My test of RSCM training is this: can it actually improve what Sunday morning sounds like somewhere? From a workshop in music group skills in Knowle or Ravensdale, to awards training in Peterborough or Portsmouth and everything in between the answer is Yes. And there are some pure-fun events, too. Enjoy! Rosemary Field, RSCM Deputy Director (Education, Voluntary Networks, Safeguarding)
