What started as a group of Swedish immigrant families meeting to seek the Lord together has grown into an established congregation within the Evangelical Covenant Church. Over the years our town has grown, our clothes have changed, we moved from one side of town to a new building on the other side but we still worship together, study the Word of God, reach out to our neighbors and seek God s guidance. The 125th Celebration Committee would like to invite you to participate in any or all the planned activities to honor this milestone of the church. This will be a joyous time to reflect on our roots, celebrate who we are today and look forward to the plan the Lord has for our future. 125 th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Friday, October 11 7:00 Homemade Ice Cream Social, History Slide Show and Brown Hymnal Sing Saturday, October 12 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Fellowship Time with Rolls and Coffee Afternoon free to spend time with family and friends 5:00 p.m. Fellowship Time with Punch and Peanuts 6:00 p.m. Catered Banquet* (M.C. 2 2 Pastor Kelly s Maternity Leave The babies are here! This means Pastor Kelly will be taking her maternity leave. She will have 8 weeks of maternity leave. After that time she will return to work at part-time hours for two weeks before she resumes her full-time schedule. With the help of our church leadership, Pastor Kelly has prepared for guest preachers and volunteers to cover responsibilities while she is on leave. If you have questions during her leave please contact Ron Wenstrand, Jim Stout, or Dawn Reimers. Schedule of Sunday Worship Speakers Sept. 8: Dan Story Sept 15: Dave Rusk Sept 22: Meagan Gillan Sept. 29: Scot Gillan Oct. 6: Randy Rodenborg Oct. 13: Tammy Swanson- Draheim Oct. 20: Balloon Days Community Worship Oct. 27: To Be Announced Giving Report Year to date: $76, Percent of Budget: 46% Average Attendance (for August) Morning Worship: 78 Baby Shower Saturday September 21st at 10:00 AM Church Fellowship Hall Everyone is invited to join in the celebration of the birth of Greg & Kelly s twins Parker Scot (5lb 14oz) and Silas Barry (7lb 4oz) born on Sept. 1st. There will be food, some games, and a time of prayer to ask God s blessing for the family. If you are planning to attend please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board. Also if you would like to help with food there is a sign up as well. There have been some people asking about what would be helpful gifts for the babies. Kelly and Greg want you to know that they would most appreciate prayer for this new chapter in their lives. Gifts are not expected, though greatly appreciated. Kelly is registered at Target. Helpful tips for gifts: 1. Just because it s twins it doesn t mean they need two of everything. 2. Gift cards or cash donations are helpful. 3. Think about what they might need throughout the entire first year such as larger size clothes, baby/toddler tableware, toys to grow with, bath toys, books, etc. 4. Items to help or pamper a new mom and dad.

3 3 Women Ministries September Each Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. Ladies meet in the prayer room Covenant Women s Retreat 2013 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33 (ESV) September at Covenant Cedars Theme: Intimacy with Christ Speaker: Lisa Weeks (serves with Mission Nebraska) Registration deadline: Sept. 10 Please see the Women Ministries bulletin board or go to wmmidwest.org/events/ for more information and registration forms. Sept.11 Rip and Roll from 9:30 AM to whenever you get tired. (Bring your own lunch) Keep on rolling! Another 20 lb. box of rolled bandages was sent to the Congo from our church. What a blessing it is for us to be able to participate in this ministry for our brothers and sisters across the ocean. The box was sent to New Windsor, Md. at a cost of $ Then another $50 was sent to Chicago to defray the cost of shipping to Congo. That is a lot of money for what we would see as worthless sheets in our economy, but so needed in destitute Congo. We would like to continue to provide for this ministry but need help to meet the costs of shipping. Donations directed to Women Ministries Rip and Roll would be greatly appreciated. You can place your designated donation in the Sunday offering plates or send them to our office and we will make sure they are deposited in the appropriate account. In August four women from our congregation (Delores Felt, Connie Kirkpatrick, Dawn Reimers, and Barb Stout) attended the Triennial Conference in San Diego which was designed around the theme Rooted. A simple and short word but yet a concept of great depth. We found the entire experience saturated with the Holy Spirit allowing our faith roots to soak in the Word of God richly. Each of us were greatly renewed during this time together with other women of faith from across the globe and we want to share what we learned with you here at home so that we might grow strong together and multiply the fruit we bear. We are already working on plans to share the knowledge we gained so be looking in future bulletins and Couriers for Bible study and prayer gatherings. We have a jump drive of the speakers and workshops ordered but for now you can see videos from the event at covchurch.tv when you click on Triennial XIV at the top of the page. Thank you to everyone who helped to support us financially so we could attend.

4 PLANNING FOR CHIC Sunday School Kick-off Sunday Sept. 8 at 9:30 AM Are you looking to grow your faith roots? Then come join us for Sunday School this year every Sunday at 9:30 AM. There are classes for every age group. Come to the Kick-off on Sept. 8th to meet this year s teachers. There will also be a special project for everyone to work on that will be used for the 125th Celebration in October. We look forward to seeing you there! We had such a great turn out for our All Church Clean-up in August. We can not say thank you enough for all you hard work and joyful attitudes. Mulch was laid, gutters cleaned, down spouts attached, bushes trimmed or removed, parking lot lines painted, windows cleaned, supply closed and rooms organized and cleaned and so much more. May God richly bless you for your service. Community Youth Groups Starting Soon For the past two school years, thanks to members of our community with a heart for our youth, there have been a couple opportunities open to junior and senior high students to connect with one another and study the Bible. This year, the Junior High Youth Group, led by Alex Nuño, will meet at the Covenant Church, starting Wednesday, September 25. Last year the group moved up to Salem Lutheran so they would have more space, but they are unable to continue meeting there this year. Alex has graciously led this group whether she s had help or not and she would love to have help! She would especially like someone who can lead games and other fun activities. If you are interested in hanging out with some great 7 th and 8 th graders from our community, please contact Alex ( , alexnuno@me.com). The High School Youth Group, led by Peter Lundin, will continue meeting Wednesday nights at his home (905 Main St.) this year and will be starting soon. Mark and Dawn Reimers of our church regularly connect with this group. If you know of a youth who may need transportation to/from youth group or have questions please contact Mark or Dawn ( ). Let Us Haul Your Trash For You! Local youth are already planning to attend CHIC 2015 (Covenant High In Christ) and would like to help you haul your trash to raise funds so they can go to this Christian event. During Wakefield s Community-Wide Clean-Up on Saturday, Oct. 5th from 8 a.m. 10 a.m. ONLY. They will come to your residence, and haul your stuff to the drop-off site for a free-will donation. You must be a city resident and follow the clean-up guidelines. There will be a sign up sheet at church the last week of September or Call the Evangelical Covenant Church, , and leave a message with your name and address. Balloon Days Community Worship (Sunday Oct. 20th at 9:00 AM) If you are interested in helping with the community worship for Balloon Days in October please talk with Pastor Garton (Salem) or Paster Potter (Presbyterian Church). Renee Kindschuh will be leading community choir for Balloon Days worship. There will be a practice Oct. 13th at 4:00 PM at Salem Lutheran Church. Everyone is welcome

6 6 Mission : Pursuing Christ s Priorities in the World Vitality Team Connection Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand in vain. Psalm 127:1 We invite you to Pray with us! Every Week For God to guide and inspire each member of the Vitality Team as we seek to be faithful to him through this process. Sept 1-7: For God to provide our church with a common vision God s preferred picture of our future together. Sept 8-14: For all who serve in leadership in our church, pray for wisdom and diligence as well as balance and rest. Sept 9-21: For the unity of our church, even when differences and disagreements exist; pray that we will live fully into our Relational Covenant. Sept : For the witness of our church as the body of Christ to our community, pray that God would remove any fear or barriers that keep us from sharing the love of Christ in word and deed. The Vitality Team will be taking a break from meeting while Pastor Kelly in on maternity leave. We will however continue to welcome conversations with you about the health, growth and ministry of our church. Opportunity to Serve our Community Our friends up the road at Salem Lutheran Church are planning on starting a new ministry to the Wakefield community this Fall and would like to invite anyone who s interested to partner with them. They plan to serve a nutritious meal every Wednesday evening from 6:00 6:45 p.m., open to the entire community (tentatively starting 10/2). Their vision goes beyond fellowship amongst Salem members; they sincerely hope to reach out to Wakefield neighbors who may not have a healthy meal every night of the week. This is something different from what we offer on Wednesday nights, and if you feel that it might be a ministry you d like to connect with, please contact Pastor Darwin Garton ( or darwingarton@gmail.com). If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away everything I own, and if I give over my body in order to boast, but do not have love, I receive no benefit. 4 Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. 6 It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13: 1-7, 13
