2014 Report Pastor Kelly Johnston Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom. 1:7b) As I look back on the year of ministry we shared in 2014, I give thanks to God for all the ways he has worked through us. One report cannot sum up all the faithful deeds and heartfelt prayers of a whole year as a fellowship of believers. Our recently adopted mission statement at least sums up what is most important to us: Inviting all to grow in Christ and serve together in God s love. In the year that has past, we lived out our mission by welcoming new babies, new members, and new friends. We partnered together to continue ministry programs and start new ones. We marked important milestones of faith and family. We relied on God s steadfast love as we also said goodbye to old friends, supported loved ones through tough illnesses, faced major losses in our community after a tornado hit, and tried to manage financial challenges. Every Sunday morning our aim is to live into our mission as we gather for worship. In 2014, we began the year reflecting on ten healthy missional markers, biblically inspired principles and practices articulated by a group of Covenant leaders. Our theme for Lent was Roll Away Your Stone, and God used that message to help many takes steps towards freedom and healing. For part of Summer we learned how to dive deep into Scripture using inductive Bible study. In the Fall we considered some basic questions: Why Jesus? Why Church? Why Me? We also learned about our unique SHAPE (spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences) and explored a bit of what God has to say about Money Matters. We finished the year with Advent, focused on Jesus as the message and Messiah SENT to us. Some other Sunday morning highlights include hearing three young people share their testimonies on Confirmation Sunday, having youth share their musical gifts by leading worship on more than one occasion, celebrating growth in Christ for kids and leaders alike on Pioneer Club Sunday, sharing our advice with this year s graduates, three infant baptisms and one adult immersion baptism (in our sanctuary!), confronting tough issues on Domestic Violence Awareness Sunday, and having 40 children perform wonderfully in the Sunday School Christmas program. We were blessed by several guest preachers and speakers who spurred us on this year, including: Debbie Blue (ECC Executive Minister of Compassion, Mercy & Justice), Dan Buhr (Executive Director of Covenant Cedars Bible Camp), Kyle Kelly (Regional Coordinator for Advocates for Victims of Abuse), Randy Rodenborg, Dave Rusk, and Brent Thompson (ECC Midwest Conference Director of Congregational Vitality). This year we were not afraid to try new things. We sang new songs. We shared communion in a new way. We were gifted with a new (to us) drum set - and it has actually been played a few times! In the Fall we began offering nursery care for children 4 years old and younger thanks to the help of many volunteers. Some leaders from our church, in partnership with leaders from Salem Lutheran Church, have helped start a new community youth group. We also accepted the challenge to take our church s PULSE. In February, 65 individuals completed surveys that helped us better assess where we are as a church. Our Vitality Team transitioned to become our Strategic Ministry Planning Team, continuing the conversation about becoming a healthy missional church. They have taken the information gathered from PULSE and other conversations to help bring clarity to our church s identity and priorities. Their work has resulted in the mission statement I ve already mentioned and continues with a statement of vision - God s preferred picture of our future ministry. I am very grateful to each person who shows up Sunday after Sunday and Wednesday after Wednesday (and plenty of days in between, too!) with the desire to grow in Christ and serve together. Thank you to Jim Stout who has served faithfully as church chair along with the other members of our Executive Board, Sam Tyler, 11

Sue VanderVeen, Rex Hansen, Joey Borg and Mike Mogus. Thank you to each member who serves on the Deacon, Christian Education, and Trustee Boards, as well as those who have served on our Vitality Team and Strategic Ministry Planning Team. Thank you to Tammie Mogus and Tiffany Lamprecht and the many others who make Pioneer Club happen week after week. Thank you to our Sunday School teachers, Bible Study leaders, and Confirmation helpers and mentors. Thank you to each heart, hand, and voice that helps make our worship services happen - ushers, greeters, our Tech Team, and our Praise Team. Thank you to Dawn Reimers for all the great work she does as our office manager, and to Annette Chase and Delores Felt for filling in over the summer while Dawn was on maternity leave. And thank you to my husband Greg who supports me in so many ways and to our awesome little boys Parker and Silas who always keep life interesting. The mission we share starts with an invitation, extended to our whole community, regardless of age, color, or walk of life, and it ends with God s love, which ties everything we do together. In the year ahead, may we press deeper into our mission with God s love always guiding us. 13 Chairman's Annual Report for 2014 As another year comes to a close I want to say thank you to Pastor Kelly for her leadership and to each person who served on the church board. Each one of you has a special gift to give as you serve God in this way. In April Barb and I attended the Midwest Conference Annual Meeting in Colorado. While there I attended a session on, The Importance of Prayer in a Healthy Church. A Healthy Church needs to be a Place of Grace, A Center of Blessing, A House of Prayer. We need to be in prayer for our Strategic Ministry Planning Team as they continue to meet and dream of ways we can serve and worship our Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor Kelly led a series of worship services exploring the different Spiritual Gifts given us. Many of us were able to use these gifts in June as we helped in many ways after the tornado that hit rural Wakefield and other communities. As we begin another year of serving God let us follow Ephesians 6:18. Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying. In His Service Jim Stout, Chairman 13

2014 Wakefield Evangelical Church Trustee Report The Trustee committee, consisting of Mike Mogus (Chairman), Sam Tyler (Secretary), Lyle Borg, Mark Muller and Becky Gothier (Stout) meet monthly when it is possible. 15 Diaconate report 2014 If anyone serves me; he must follow me and where I am, there will my servant be also. (John 12:26) One of the responsibilities of the diaconate is hospitality in the church which is partially done by the works of the greeters and the people who are willing to serve at the fellowship after the service. We would like to thank all the people who were willing to help us out in these two areas, which makes the church a friendlier place for all. I would also like to thank Debbie Borg and Dawn Reimers for the welcome bags they put together to give to new attendees of our church, and also for the care packages they sent to college kids to tell them we are thinking and praying for them. Another area where we work is with the worship service, assisting the pastor in any way we can. This past year we worked with Pastor Kelly in getting Jeff Rohlwing to come in July and lead a worship service in the park. Thanks to all who lined this up. Thanks to the people who take care of the decorating the church and hanging different banners to signify different times and events of worship. We also had 2 movie nights showing the movies Camp and It s Our Time The diaconate with some help from others also went to Sioux City to the Gospel Mission to help serve a meal and lead a worship service there. Thanks to Connie Krueger and Merna Jones for helping lead the music, and Sue Vander Veen s dad for also playing special music at this service. Missions is another area where the diaconate work. This year we had 4 Lenten breakfasts which focused on other parts of the world. Speakers included Lori Allen, Pam Norlen, Carleen Bodlak, and Pastor Raab from the Martinsburg church. These 4 people had been to different countries or came from a different country (Pastor Raab) and showed us what life is like in places other than Wakefield and what needs there are abroad. We also discussed a mission to sponsor clinics in the Congo and decided to recommend support for it to the congregation which they later agreed to. We also interviewed people for new membership to our church. We have welcomed Jason and Javannah Jensen, Kelly Hernandez, and Tracey Anderson. We have also interviewed Hannah Borg, Megan Muller, and Mark and Dawn Reimers and will recommend the congregation welcomes them as members at the Annual Meeting. I would like to thank God for his help and patience, Pastor Kelly for all her leadership and helpful ideas, and the rest of the members of the diaconate for all their hard work. Also thanks to all the people who helped in any way including praying for us. Keep praying and read the Bible daily. Rex Hansen, Diaconate Chairman 15

Christian Education (C.E.) Board Report for 2014 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. Our church hosted the community VBS program this year. It was held June 2-6 from 6:30-8:30. The name of the program this year was Kingdom Rock. A lot of kids went to summer camp at Covenant Cedars. Summer flew by and we had our Sunday School Kick-Off on Sept. 7. The C.E. Board served omelets with all the fixings. Our new curriculum for the grade school age kids was Spark. Greg Johnston is teaching an elective class and the adult class is using David C. Cook materials. Confirmation started on September 10 with six first year students and five second year students. Sunday School Teacher Appreciation was held on Oct. 12 with Elizabeth and Kim serving oven French toast, bacon, sausage, O.J., coffee and milk. The C.E. 18 Wakefield Evangelical Covenant Church Strategic Ministry Planning Team 2014 Report In February of 2014, the Vitality Team led an effort to take the pulse of our church, using the Pulse assessment, provided by the Evangelical Covenant denomination. 65 surveys were completed by church members and attenders ages 12 and up, representing a good cross-section of our congregation. Results from the survey were reported to the congregation at With the completion of the Pulse survey, the Vitality Team shifted its role and therefore its name to become the Strategic Ministry Planning Team (SMPT). Current Members are Debbie Borg (Co-Chair), Rex Hansen, Pastor Kelly Johnston (Co-Chair), Kami Murphy, Barb Preston, Dawn Reimers and Dave Rusk. The SMPT s goals are to take the information that has been collected that helps us understand where our church is (internal assessment) and what the needs are in our community (external assessment) and help clarify our church s identity and priorities. That is, how has God uniquely shaped our church, and what is he uniquely calling us to do? So far, the answers to these questions have come from a process of articulating the mission and vision and vision of our church. A summary of our process thus far is below. MISSION - a brief statement that answers the question of why we exist and what we do Our Strategic Ministry Planning Team looked at a variety of Scriptures that connect with God s intentions for the mission of the church (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 10:45, 12:29-31; Luke 4:18-21, 19:10, 24:46-49; John 20:21; Acts 1:8). We wrote down words and phrases that connected with what we saw in the Bible. After reflecting on Scripture and our church context, we drafted a statement that was then affirmed by the congregational meeting on October 19, 2014: Inviting all to grow in Christ and serve together in God s love. VISION - a longer statement that describes what we hope to become, where we are headed, and the result of what we do With our mission statement established, we reached out to our congregation to get input that would help us in our process of discerning vision statement. We asked them to respond to the following questions: o What are the gifts of our congregation? o What are the strengths of our leadership? o What are the needs of our community? We prayed and discussed what we heard from those who responded, adding our own reflections as well. We discovered some common themes: o We are a welcoming and friendly church. Our congregation and our pastor are committed to welcoming people of all ages. We need to dream big about how God wants us to go deeper in inviting our community to experience God s love here and create an environment where that is possible 18

o o o We have connected well with families in our community - we need to dream big about how God wants us to go deeper and be a resource for families with the many challenges they face We value the centrality of the Word of God - we need to dream big about how to go deeper in our discipleship and support each other as we build a foundation of faith that can withstand life s many challenges. There are many gifts and abilities in our congregation, though some are not identified or used to their fullest potential - we need to dream big about how we can mobilize and inspire people to serve God with the resources he s given them, creating a culture of continual growth. We began to dream up some of the things we feel may reflect God s desired future for our congregation as we live out our mission. At this time our vision statement is still in draft form. We continue to pray over it and seek response from the congregation. Once we collectively affirm our vision statement, it is our desire that this statement help guide all church boards and committees in determining ministry priorities for the next few years. Submitted by Pastor Kelly Johnston (co-chair) Scholarship Committee Report Our Congregation approved a revision of the Centennial Scholarship Fund at the April Quarterly Meeting This revision allowed more college students an opportunity to apply for a church sponsored scholarship. Students no longer have to attend North Park to receive Scholarships. Only the interest from the Scholarship fund will be awarded as Scholarships. In 2014 there were four $500 scholarships were awarded. Kristyna Muller, Josh Dolph, Kami Murphy and Jenna Henderson received scholarships. Scholarship Chairman Jim Stout 19
