1 Tuesday Tidbits September 18, 2012 Church Website: Pastor s Blog: A weekly update on the life of Christ Presbyterian Church, Fairfax, Virginia World Communion Sunday October 7 th Join Christ Presbyterian Church as we celebrate the unity we have in Christ on October 7th when we hold our annual World Communion Sunday worship and international potluck meal. During our 11 o clock worship, we will be joined by our Brother and Sisters of the Light Global Mission Church Choir. Many other expressions of God s diverse creation will be expressed in our readings, music and prayers. This year we hope to have a combined musical offering with our choir joining the LGMC choir for the choral benediction. If would like to make a special contribution in worship please contact Pastor Geoff at pastor@cpcfairfax.org. Following our 11 o clock worship, we will enjoy an international potluck fellowship meal. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to pass that represents their heritage or a dish that they love from another culture. Previous year s meals have been a wonderful culinary experience, and this year should be even greater. Please help us to know what you will bring by signing up at the World Communion Sunday display outside the sanctuary. Contact Gisele Onga Nana at giseleonga@myway.com for more information. We are also expanding our Heritage Display this year. You are invited to bring items that help provide a glimpse into your culture. You can also provide a background display to highlight various aspects of your culture. Music Notes by Barbara Stefan In our music this Sunday Prelude: Children of the Heavenly Father Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!

The hymn is based on a poem of 19 th century Swedish poet, Lina (pronounced Lie-nah) Sandell-Berg. When Lina was twelve, she became ill and was paralyzed.

The simple, lilting tune is a Swedish folk melody called Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara, which translated is no one can be safer.

At the time, the state-sponsored church didn t allow simple pietistic hymns like this one. But Ahnfelt sang them anyway, traveling around with his ten-string guitar.

3 Music Notes by Barbara Stefan In our music this Sunday Prelude: Children of the Heavenly Father Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! 1 John 3:1 (NKJV) Sunday s prelude was suggested from the reading of Mark 3:37, in which Jesus took up a child, and spoke to his disciples about welcoming a child in God s name. Out of her experience came her first book of poems, published when she was still a teenager. The simple, lilting tune is a Swedish folk melody called Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara, which translated is no one can be safer. Its origins are unknown, but Oskar Ahnfelt, a Lutheran Pietist who helped introduce evangelical hymns to the Swedish church, set many of Lina s poems to music. At the time, the state-sponsored church didn t allow simple pietistic hymns like this one. But Ahnfelt sang them anyway, traveling around with his ten-string guitar. When opposition arose, he was ordered to sing before King Karl XV. The king loved Ahnfelt s simple melodies and tender hymns, and said: You may sing them as much as you desire in both of my kingdoms. to our Behind-the-Scenes Music Volunteers Mary Jane Roth has made repairs to the children s choir robes. Stephanie Twedt assists greatly in organizing and cataloguing our music library. Rebecca Twedt will be helping with the children s choir this year. June Gladding led music in VBS this summer, & accompanied the Christmas & Easter cantatas. Carolyn Tate accompanied the children s choir this past year. Lois Wenzell keeps the handbell table coverings clean and neat. Mary Ellen Absetz and Wanda Baddley polish the handbells. Charles Thies put our music library on computer. Welcome to our newest choir & handbell member, Marge Sielinski! 3

Liturgist receive a script to guide them through the service and provide them with the right words.

7 Sign-up to help on Sunday mornings Each week we have opportunities to help our congregation worship. These opportunities are both in front of the congregation as well as behind the scenes. We will train you to do any of the positions and the opportunity is open to virtually anyone. Liturgist - Help our congregation worship by leading prayers and reading Scripture. Liturgist receive a script to guide them through the service and provide them with the right words. Familiarity with our worship service and a willingness to speak in front of people are the only requirements. Children s Sermon Do you love kids? Individuals or teams can sign-up to offer an age appropriate time with children message. There are many online resources to help prepare for this opportunity. Audio Each week we need an individual to control the sound system during our worship services. The new sound board makes this position much easier and we will train you on how to complete the task. While the sound board has many knobs and switches, the sound board operator actually uses very few of them. If you would like to sign up to help with these duties please see the sign-up sheet on the Coffee Bar or speak to Pastor Geoff. Volunteers needed! The previous positions have been filled. We now have the following openings: * Thrift Store: Regular weekly/bi-weekly volunteers needed on Tuesday and/ or Saturday for a two hour shift anytime between 9am - 6pm (5pm on Saturday). * Client Services: One regular weekly volunteer needed on to work directly with our families (clients) to determine eligibility for food, clothing, and financial assistance from WFCM. This volunteer also assists these individuals with locating additional sources of financial counseling, spiritual guidance, and other resources. Hours: Thursdays from 10am - 2:30pm * Food Pantry: The Annual Boy Scout "Scouting for Food" Drive is on Saturday, November 10, Volunteers needed for 3 hour shifts from 10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm at the Boy Scout Sorting Site.
