1 From the Diocese Diocese of Allentown Knights of Columbus Newsline February 2013 THE MOST REVEREND JOHN O. BARRES, DD, STD, JCL FOURTH BISHOP OF ALLENTOWN Lent 2013 My brothers and sisters in Christ, Most of us, every year since earliest childhood, have celebrated the season of Lent and every year we have probably asked ourselves the same question: What will I do for Lent this year? Almost always, what we have in mind is something we will give up for Lent, some sacrifice that we will make. Any time we make a sacrifice, it is far more than just the simple fact of "giving something up," because the ultimate purpose of sacrifice is always positive rather than negative. It's true purpose is to choose to let go of things, to express our trust in God and so to be more open to His greatest gifts. Sacrifice reminds us of how important certain things can become to us and how we always need to reevaluate the true meaning of life. We are likely to be content with

2 things too small. The greatest gift and what we need more than anything else is the love and the presence of God himself in our lives. Our Holy Father has proclaimed this year to be the Year of Faith, and the action of letting go of smaller things in order to make more room for God is itself a tremendous act of faith. It reminds us of the truth that no matter how important anything else is, the need for God is more important by far. Some time ago, as the Year of Faith began, I had asked that every active Catholic in the Diocese of Allentown make the effort to bring back to the Church at least one inactive or former Catholic. These inactive Catholics are quite literally our brothers and sisters, our children, our parents, our friends and neighbors, and we want them to enjoy the magnificent gift that is the Church. The effort to do this is really a simple one, and it can come about simply by extending to someone you know the invitation to return to Mass with you. To do this does require some sacrifice, even if it is only the sacrifice of overcoming our initial reluctance to do so. That small act of sacrifice has a large positive result if it brings back even one person to the joy of sharing the Sacraments and living actively in the life of the community of God's people. As I did before, I ask you once again to share with someone in need the wonderful gift that is your faith. I ask you to take advantage of this season of Lent to overcome whatever hesitation you may feel and to welcome someone to rejoice with you in the goodness of God. It is my prayer that all of us may be blessed during this Lenten season and that whatever blessings we are given may make us a source of blessing to others. May God grant His graces to all of you and bring you to rejoice in the fullness of His resurrection. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Allentown Chapter News Things with the Chapter are going well. At the next meeting scheduled for February 23, Kutztown University, Columbus Chapel 9:00AM, meeting to follow) we ll be taking up a few items including adoption of by-laws, upcoming Fortnight for Freedom, Quo Vadis Days, etc. While all seems to be moving forward, I want to ease many Council s worries concerning funding of the Chapter. Plainly put, member councils of the Chapter will NOT be assessed for funding any of the Chapter s activities. It s worth writing again, member councils will NOT be assessed period. When we take up the by-laws issue, you will note that there is no mention of assessing member Councils in said by-laws. I speak for the other Officers of the Chapter and the Worthy State Treasurer (who was instrumental in seeing the Chapter become a reality) that we are not in favor of charging councils to belong to the Allentown Diocese

3 Chapter. To build a modest treasury for our minimal expenses we have asked the six Assemblies that are within the Allentown Diocese for voluntary donations, and to date two have agreed to ONE TIME donations; hopefully the other four will make a one-time donation. The Northeast Board of District Deputies also generously contributed to our endeavor. So now the funding issue is put to rest, and so is a reason not to join the Chapter. I encourage all councils within the Diocese to join and help be a communication conduit for the Priests of the Diocese and Bishop Barres. I hope all will consider coming to the 2/23 meeting. Go with God, John Matulevich Diocesan Events

The Allentown Diocese will hold its very first Quo Vadis days at DeSales University from July 28 to August 1, The Diocese is reaching out to the Knights of Columbus to help make this a very successful event. How can the Knights help? There are a number of ways, such as offering to pay registration fees ($100) for some/all of the participants. Total cost is estimated at $200 per attendee. The high school students will have time for recreation, so there are needs for athletic equipment, t- shirts and water/gatorade containers. Any and all donations accepted (see above) Dioceses that hold Quo Vadis days have seen a sizable increase in vocations. When I was at a retreat in the Harrisburg Diocese five years ago, they displayed a board with pictures of their 32 seminarians, which is more than double the number we have in the Allentown Diocese. Their bishop at that time, Bishop Rhoades, stated that this increase was a direct result of their Quo Vadis program. He added, "The Nazareth Area Food Bank has been providing food for families in the Nazareth, PA., area for about 25 years. Currently, approximately 250 families and individuals a total numbering more than 300 people, including more than 100 children are served monthly.

15 Unfortunately, because of lingering economic and employment problems in our region, the need remains great. We re seeing more young families who say they never envisioned having to turn to a food bank for food." 16 In Closing Dear Brothers, I found it incredulous that the major news outlets (again) ignored the March for Life. Even among the pro-lifers, there were some doubts about how the March would turn out with Nellie Gray s passing. A poor turnout would be downplayed due to recent organizational changes. Despite the gloomy forecast, the crowd was huge. It seemed bigger than some of the recent ones where the weather conditions were much more favorable. The number of youth participating in the March is truly amazing. We are told that our youth is the future of the Pro-Life Movement; in reality, our youth is the Pro-Life Movement. I think the pro-choice side has vastly underestimated their resolve and collective power. In many ways, so have we as brother Knights. We have neglected a precious resource, namely our Catholic young men. We do a lot of posturing and talking during meetings; it is time now to encourage our youth to join our ranks and soon! The reality is we are getting older. Just take a quick glance at our rosters. While we cannot discount the invaluable service of our older members, we cannot wait till the council is on its last legs to address a declining, aging council. By then, it is almost too late. Now is the time to bring in younger men, so we can tap into their energy and to also mentor them. They say charity begins at home and so does membership growth. We all have sons and nephews. Ask them to join (if you can t ask them, then who can you ask?) How can a baby boomer or someone from the greatest generation relate to the younger crowd? He gets his grandsons, sons and nephews to do the talking. They know the social media that can be used to attract Catholic young men that are looking to get involved. They have seen their fathers, uncles and grandfathers give back to their church and community from the time they were children. You could not ask for better credentials to invigorate a council. Fraternally, John Fitzpatrick PA State Treasurer From Field Agent Steven P. Sofranko Brothers All, From time to time each of you have heard me detail the free benefits (beyond estate planning and insurance I handle etc.) we Knights offer our members. The attached includes payments to fellow Knights or our children who are uninsurable in the commercial for profit insurance world.
