3 February 2018 Volume 43 Issue 02 3 FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends and Family of Good Samaritan 2017 was a year that will not be easily forgotten. I know many of you experienced personal hardship. Add to the personal struggles, one of the worst hurricane seasons America has ever endured, one of the worst fire seasons in California, and the tragic shooting down at the Mandalay Bay and for many, we are just hoping 2018 will be better than But in what do we put our hope? Where do we find the strength to not only face adversity, and uncertainty, but power through it remaining hopeful and dare I say even peaceful? Bill Hybels in his book Simplify talks about the difference between the things that deplete our souls and those that replenish them. When living in a world that can cause us to feel anxious, fearful, or just plain worn out, we have to make sure we are minimizing the depleters and maximizing the replenishers. Here are a few simple steps to do just that. Take a few minutes to sit down with a piece of paper and write down the things that seem to deplete you. Here are a few but feel free to add your own: 1. Spending too much time at work, 2. Being around negative people 3. Consuming too much depressing news 4. Not being able to say no, so you get involved in too many projects and activities 5. Feeling driven to overachieve 6. Not taking any time for yourself 7. Wasting too much time in front of a TV screen, computer screen, or with electronic devices If you are struggling to identify your depleters spend a few more minutes in prayer asking God for some guidance, and/or ask a friend or spouse to help you identify the activities in your life that seem to take it out of you. You should also try to identify why you seem to drift towards those activities. Don t make any plans to give them up yet, but just identify them. Now proceed from the above step to the next step below. Step two is a little bit more fun. 1. Identify some of your Replenishers. If you were in church Jan 6/7 you heard me talk about some of these. 2. Connect with God on a more regular basis There is no better single way to replenish your soul than to make room for a little Chair time with God every day 3. Time with Family 4. Time with Friends 5. Recreation What do you enjoy doing? Reading a good book, watching an uplifting show or video, serving at a food kitchen, preparing a nice meal, etc. 6. Exercise Whatever fits your lifestyle. Maybe it is just a short walk, or going for a bike ride. Maybe it is more rigorous like lifting weights, or playing a sport. Physical activity is a proven replenisher. Identify one or two things that fit into this category that you could start right away. I really encourage a minimum of 5-10 minutes with God every day at the very least. Now, rather than add a replenisher to your already full schedule, simply trade out time spent on a depleter for time spent on something that replenishes your soul. Can you spend 10 less minutes with the news and 10 more minutes with God? Can you leave work 1/2 hour earlier to have dinner with your family or a friend? Can you give up some computer time to meet a friend out for coffee or lunch? Can you wake up 20 minutes earlier to go for a walk, run, or bike ride? Can you say no to a project or activity and schedule a date night a few times a month with your spouse? How about spending 1 less hour watching TV or doing chores on the weekend and making church attendance a priority? My friends, God wants you to live your very best life, in John 10:10 Jesus states, My purpose is to give my sheep a rich and satisfying life, but God lets you make the choices. Don t wait. If you hope for 2018 to be better than 2017, make the changes in your life that will make that hope a reality. Trading out something that depletes your soul for something that connects you to God and to his love will bring you into that hope, but also create more fun, resilience, and peace in your life. Blessed to be your Pastor Don Lorfing

8 8 February 2018 Volume 43 Issue 02 YOUTH MINISTRY Jr &Sr High Series: Make It A Habit A 4-WEEK SERIES ON SPIRITUAL HABITS If you re an adult, the idea of spiritual habits is probably pretty familiar to you. Spiritual disciplines, quiet time, devotions whatever you call it, you ve probably established at least a few rhythms that help you grow spiritually. (Or, at least, you re working on it.) The teenagers in our ministry, on the other hand, might need a little help from you to figure out how, exactly, to grow spiritually. So in this 4-week series, we ll help our students discover four habits that can help them grow spiritually. The four habits we ll cover are Spending Time with God, Spending Time with Others, Sharing Your Story, and Using Your Gifts. Introducing these habits to our students now, will help set them up for a lifetime of spiritual growth. What does He want to say to us in His final hours? What does He tell the people standing at the foot of the cross, to pass down through the ages? He speaks only seven short statements. Words of forgiveness, salvation, relationship, abandonment, distress, triumph, and reunion. Seven statements that mean everything. Join us and invite a friend to journey with us as we explore the meaning behind the last seven statements of Jesus, before He gave up his life on the cross.
