1 IN MEMORIAM PACIANO M. TAN August 7, Nov. 6, 2008 Paciano Mabansag Tan, was born on August 7, 1910 Passed out of this life, with his daughters by his bedside, on November 6, 2008, in Stockton, California. Paciano was born and grew up in Catbalogan City, Samar in the Philippines. In 1939 he married Maria Concepcion Longara. They raised seven children in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental where Paciano served for over 30 years as the cashier of Silliman University. Following the footsteps of their children, Paciano and Ma. Concepcion immigrated to the United States in 1978, making their home in Stockton. They remained happily married until Maria s death in Paciano was a longtime, active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. His great love for his family and his God will be treasured in the memories of the seven children, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who mourn his passing but rejoice in his life. Funeral services were be held Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 1 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church,1002 Eighth St. with committal following at Parkview Cemetery. TAN On Friday, November 7, 2008, JvPal wrote Dear Fellow Sillimanians, I am forwarding an from Rev. Isaias Paniamogan, President of SUAA-San Diego, as relayed by Rev. Johnny Pia, announcing the demise of Mr. Paciano Tan at the age of 98. Mr. Paciano Tan, long-time cashier at the SU Business Office, died yesterday, Nov. 6, 2008, in Stockton, California. His body now lies in state at the Frisbie-Warren Mortuary, 809 N. California St., Stockton, CA (tel ). Viewing is scheduled on Monday evening, and the burial will be on Tuesday, Nov. 11. The Silliman community sympathizes with the Tan family in their hour of grief, and also fondly remembers and celebrates the life of Mr. Tan, whose dedicated service to our alma mater was exemplary. Contrary to one cashier who was gruff, grouchy and unsmiling, Mr. Tan was always accomodating, kind, and smiling as he accepted payments I made for tuition and other fees. I always had the highest respect for him; it was a pleasure to deal with him (and not the other one). The family of Mr. Paciano Tan should know that he was very much appreciated by the students at SU. He exuded the qualities that endeared him to many. It is not easy for some to be kind and smiling; Mr. Tan showed that he is a person who is adept in public relations because he cared for the students. Grace and I pray for his eternal repose in the mansion of the Lord of Hosts. We, Lita and John, extend our deepest condolences to you all in these trying times. No doubt, Mr. Tan, will be missed by all and most intensely by his family. The realization that a loved one will be missing in future family get togethers results in a period of mourning. A ritual expression of sadness for a great loss. But the resilience of the human spirit will prevail and the sadness brought on by the loss will be superseded by the myriad of memories of the good moments that were shared. Mr. Tan was a good man, a kind man and a gentle human being evidenced by the friendly smile that he so generously shared with all he met. Your perception of Mr. Tan evolved from being a provider, a teacher, a counselor, a friend and always a loving and caring father. Mr. Tan not only learned the lessons of life but also passed the acquired wisdom from life to his family through exemplary living. Thus the legacy of almost a century of living shall continue to live on in his children, his children's children, and on and on and on... Today, you all mourn a great loss, but with the passage of time, comes the celebration of a life brought on by memories of the good times that lasts a life time. 4 Nov. 7, 2008 Dear Fely, Intoy, Grace, Miriam and the rest of the extended Tan family, First of all, our close ties together is because of your parents - Mr. and Mrs. Tan. I remember them very dearly - visiting your residence in Dumaguete, Bible study, and the sari sari store. My continued contact with Mr. Tan was when I worked with DYSR. I had a small project with funds coming through the SU treasurer's office. I had a very pleasant business relationship with Mr. Tan. I appreciated his help in the project of publishing THE UPPER ROOM in Cebuano - Ang Dapit Sa Pag ampo. Furthermore, my memories include the fact that your parents come from Catbalogan. Your parents and my parents know each other while we lived in Tacloban City - long time ago. We had common "roots", language, and faith. Your parents are an inspiration in our journey of faith, specially when we had close contact with them in Dumaguete City through the University church and the City church. We all praise God for lives that live God's righteousness and love. I had a wonderful time staying in your Papa and Mama's house in my 5 years at Silliman. I had never met a person as low key as your Papa. When I was angry about something, and would mention it to him, he would always try to pacify me and say, its not worth being angry. He will say do your work and study it will do you good. I should credit him in some ways for what I am today. And to say all of you kids have grown to be just like your Mama and Papa, easy to get along with, very respectful children. I was a part of your family for 5 years which I will always cherish for the rest of my life. He always exhibited a smile that was so understanding of whatever needs we had in the Business Office.
