1 making things happen Fall Endowment Foundation of the Diocese of Marquette P2K Grant Support Foundation Awards Grants Grants for are now being distributed. Nearly $99,000 is awarded to Catholic schools. Each of the nine schools will receive an unrestricted award. The school principals have indicated that they will be using the funds for things such as curriculum, salaries, tuition assistance and building maintenance. Several parishes received grants to participate in P2K, the diocesan youth rally for high school students. The event was held October 2628 in Marquette with 175 participants from throughout the diocese. Greg Gostomski, director of youth ministry for the diocese, reports that one highlight of this year s event was the Stations of the Cross at Holy Cross Cemetery. We received really positive feedback on the Stations of the Cross. Many people said they had never prayed the Stations like that before. To see more faces from P2K, visit The U.P. Catholic on facebook! The focus for parish faith formation grants this year is on Year of Faith initiatives to kick off the New Evangelization, a strategic long-range effort designed to revitalize the life of faith of Catholics in the Upper Peninsula and bring people back to the Church. Many parishes are receiving grant support for a wide variety of exciting initiatives that engage people in activities to deepen and strengthen their faith. Grants are supporting parish pilgrimages, scholarships for youth to attend catechetical events such as P2K and See the See youth rallies, starting a Newman Club at Gogebic Community College, initiating adult study of the US Catholic Catechism, and much more. Catholic Social Services of the Upper Peninsula is awarded over $19,000. The organization traditionally uses its annual funding from Legacy of Faith to offer counseling assistance to those Continued on page 2 Preserving and fostering the Catholic faith in the Upper Peninsula

2 Letter from the bishop This year, I wanted Legacy of Faith grants to focus on specific initiatives at the parish and vicariate level for the Year of Faith. I am using the Year of Faith as a springboard to launch the New Evangelization in our diocese. The New Evangelization will be a strategic ongoing effort designed to revitalize the life of faith of our people and bring people back to the Church. As we prepare for the New Evangelization, the Year of Faith is a time of engaging people in initiatives to deepen and strengthen their faith. The opportunity for parishes to receive Legacy of Faith grants helps to fuel the creative spirit and local ingenuity of parish leadership. They are designing exciting initiatives that really engage people, help them to grow deeper and stronger in their faith, and prepare them for the New Evangelization. I was very inspired by the variety and quality of grant requests that we received and delighted to be able to fund so many of them. As you browse the list of approved grants, the stories and photos in this newsletter, I hope you share in my sense of awe at the work that is being done in our parishes and missions, Catholic schools and Catholic Social Services to foster the Catholic faith. Foundation Awards Continued from page 1 individuals who do not have insurance to pay for services. Last year, funding from Legacy of Faith provided 300 therapy sessions for people in need. Watch for additional grants from the Catholic Action Fund throughout the coming year in support of diocesan initiatives that engage people, help them grow deeper and stronger in their faith, and prepare them for the New Evangelization. Of course, none of this would be possible without our Legacy of Faith donors. Thank you for your gifts to the Foundation and your support of the mission. May this Year of Faith bring you closer to the Lord. God bless you! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Rev. Alexander K. Sample Bishop of Marquette Diocesan Catholic school principals and their superintendent gather prior to the start of the new school year. Every year diocesan Catholic schools receive grant funds from the Foundation. This year, principals have indicated that they will be using their grant funds for things such as curriculum, salaries, tuition assistance and building maintenance. 3 During these hard financial times, the LOF Grants have helped our parishes out tremendously. We ve received money for resources such as textbooks, YouCats (Youth Catechism), adult and youth DVD programs, and they have made it possible for our youth to attend P2K. We want to thank the Legacy of Faith Endowment Foundation for their generosity. - Paula LeFevre, Faith Formation & Youth Ministry Coordinator, Garden Area Catholic Churches Bishop s Ambassadors The Bishop s Ambassadors is a membership organization led by Bishop Alexander Sample and perpetually by future bishops of the Diocese of Marquette. The primary objective of the organization is to hand on to future generations the great, living tradition of Catholic faith that has been handed down by past generations. Each fall the Legacy of Faith Bishop s Ambassadors gather for a special Mass and dinner with the bishop. This year s event was held at St. Michael Parish in Marquette. In the photo above, some of the Ambassadors and friends of Legacy of Faith gather with Bishop Sample following Mass. Bishop s Ambassadors are the backbone of the Legacy of Faith initiative, and they serve as a motivated group of concerned Catholic leaders that the bishop consults with and speaks to regarding key diocesan issues and concerns. For more information about joining the Bishop s Ambassadors, visit or contact Terri Gadzinski at 906/ or tgadzinski@dioceseofmarquette.org.

It was a day of mutual sharing and bonding, inspiration and hope, fun and educational. A grant from Legacy of Faith helped to make the per-person cost more affordable. A diocesan Marian pilgrimage is being planned for August 16-18, 2013 to three Wisconsin shrines (Our Lady of Good Help in New Franken; Mary, Help of Christians at Holy Hill; and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse.) More information on this pilgrimage will be forthcoming on the diocesan and cathedral websites. Visit or

6 What is the Catholic Action Fund? The Foundation awards grants each year based on four priority areas: Catholic Schools (50%), parish-based faith formation programs (30%), Catholic Social Services of the Upper Peninsula (10%), and the Catholic Action Fund (10%) The organization was unable to sustain weekly sponsors to keep the program televised; however timely specials were produced and aired at Easter, Pentecost, and when Bishop Frederic Baraga was declared Venerable. So, what exactly is the Catholic Action Fund? It is flexible funding that is available each year to Bishop Alexander K. Sample (and all future bishops of the Diocese of Marquette). The purpose of the fund is to support new and emerging ministries in the diocese, or programs or projects that are timely but need additional funding. One emerging ministry in the Diocese of Marquette that received support from the Catholic Action Fund was Claves Regni Ministries, a new lay Catholic apostolate founded in The organization is dedicated to leading all people into the fullness of Truth found in the Catholic Church. Claves Regni, with the aid of Legacy of Faith grant funds, produced and televised an educational program called Keys of the Kingdom, which aired weekly for about four months during the winter months in A partnership with The U.P. Catholic newspaper of the Diocese of Marquette then evolved and a web version of the program was developed. The web version features a progression through the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is available at org and at The organization is currently in discussion with a local television station to produce a four-part series on the Year of Faith. The series will feature the moments identified by Bishop Sample that correspond to the four parts of the Holy Mass. Program sponsors are needed to ensure that the episodes can be aired. Interested sponsors should Kevin Branson at info@clavesregni.com. Other ministries that the Catholic Action Fund has supported in the past include diocesan sesquicentennial events, including the main celebration in Marquette s Superior Dome in August 2007 Bishop Alexander Sample (left), Kevin Branson, and Father Ryan Ford (right) are on the set of Keys of the Kingdom at FOXUP (Charter Channel 11) studios, filming a special that was aired on Easter Sunday that over 2,500 people attended, specialized trainings for volunteer ministers including marriage preparation and natural family planning, youth ministry programs, and much more. Over the years, nearly $106,000 has been distributed from the Catholic Action Fund. The flexible nature of the fund makes it a valuable resource, helping to put into action lifechanging ministries that draw people more fully into the Catholic faith. In 2013, Bishop Sample plans to use remaining monies from the Catholic Action Fund to support Year of Faith initiatives. Parish faith formation staff receive grant checks for a variety of programs to engage people in initiatives to deepen and strengthen their faith. Pictured from L to R are Hannah Groeneveld (Norway & Vulcan),Pat Niksich (Ironwood), Kate Swanson (Escanaba), Katie Flaherty (Marquette) and Terri Gadzinski, development director for the Diocese of Marquette. Pastors from several parishes receive grant checks for parish faith formation initiatives. Pictured L to R are Rev. Larry Van Damme, St. Michael, Marquette; Bishop Alexander K. Sample; Rev. John Martignon, St. Ignatius Loyola, Houghton; and Rev. Corey Litzner, Precious Blood, Stephenson.

7 The Catholic Service Award The Catholic Service Award was developed in the spirit of Legacy of Faith to preserve and foster the Catholic faith in the Upper Peninsula. The award recognizes individuals for lifetime dedication and service to the Catholic Church. Recipients of the annual award are recognized personally by the bishop and presented with a commemorative medallion. Edna Hocking of St. Anthony Parish in Gwinn and Michael Decet of St. Rita Parish in Trenary are recipients of the 2012 Legacy of Faith Catholic Service Award. Thank you for a lifetime of dedication and service to the Catholic Church! Read the inspiring stories of these award recipients at Faith.net.
