As stated in my pastoral letter, We Wish to See Jesus, this phase corresponds to the Liturgy of the Word in the Holy Mass and focuses on the Word of God as contained in Sacred Scripture. At the recommendation of the Council for the New Evangelization, I am asking all parishes and missions to conduct a ritual for the blessing of Bibles that families will bring to Masses the weekend of December 29 and 30, the Feast of the Holy Family. In the coming weeks, the diocese will provide parishes with the ritual to bless the Bibles in church, the ritual of enthronement at home, and the weekly reading plan (an ancillary reading plan will also be provided for those individuals or families who wish to delve more deeply into Sacred Scripture). I will talk about these Bible blessing and enthronement rituals in the CD I will ask all parishes and missions to play on the Fourth Sunday of Advent (December 22/23, 2012). The CD could also be played at Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses as an outreach to those Catholics who come to Mass for the holy day, if desired. 11 BISHOP SAMPLE S SCRIPT SECOND MOMENT OF THE YEAR OF FAITH CD To be played Dec. 22/23, 2012 Length: 2.30 This is Bishop Alexander Sample. It gives me great joy to welcome all of you to this second moment in our celebration of the Year of Faith. This period will run from Christmas until Holy Week. And this part of the Year of Faith will focus on the part of the Holy Mass that we call the Liturgy of the Word. And we will focus during this time on the Sacred Scriptures, on the Bible. As we celebrate at Christmas time the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us, we will celebrate God s Word in a very special way. We will take a closer look at what God has revealed to us in His Holy Word, in the Sacred Scriptures. I ask you during this period of the Year of Faith to open your hearts and your minds to God as he speaks to us in the Sacred Scripture, in his Holy Word. During this time, we will try to teach all of you to take a more focused look at the Holy Bible. We hope to teach you how to study the Bible, how to pray with the Word of God, to meditate upon the words of Scripture and to apply the words of the Bible to your own lives. God s Word is a living Word, and it speaks to each one of us today. As a way of introducing all of us to this moment of our Year of Faith, we are going to ask that each one of us enthrone the Holy Bible in our homes. We will provide a ritual to use for you and your family to create that special place of honor in your home for the Word of God. We will also provide a reading plan for you, asking that you, individually and as a family, take time each week to read the Holy Scriptures. We will focus on the Gospel of St. Luke, which is the Gospel that the Church gives us during this year. I ask that each one of you draw closer to God through his Holy Word during this time. God will speak to you and will draw you closer into communion with himself and in his mercy and love. God bless each and every one of you.

12 DIOCESE OF MARQUETTE Diocesan Pastoral Council Media Meeting Room St. Peter Cathedral, 311 W. Baraga Avenue, Marquette October 6, 2012 Present: Bishop Alexander Sample, Fr. Ron Browne, Joseph Domitrovich, Dr. David Drockton, Susan Hanmer, Mary Rosten, Kelsey Roy, Connee Sagataw, Msgr. Michael Steber, Deacon Warren Vonck, Dennis Winter. Absent or Excused: Zanoni. Clayton Ebsch, Sr. Ellen Enright, Rebecca Farrer, Dave Lynott, Maureen Call to Order: The meeting began at 10:30 am with the prayer for the New Evangelization led by Bishop Sample. Approve Minutes / Agenda: The minutes from the June 6, 2012 meeting were approved. Vocations Update: Bishop Sample led the discussion on vocations. The bishop indicated that there currently are 10 seminarians. One will be ordained to the priesthood in December of this year but then there is not another ordination to the priesthood until In other discussion, Fr. Chernier held a St. Andrews dinner in Menominee. Also at the annual Steubenville conference, some of the teenagers expressed interest in a vocation, including women to the religious. The bishop mentioned that there are encouraging signs, particularly in homes where home schooling occurs. The bishop believes this is a result of parental involvement and the families being actively engaged in the discussion of vocations. Parish Visits: In open discussion, some of the items discussed during the council members visits to the local parishes included; (1) The declining population is adversely affecting parish finances; (2) A real effort to focus on the youth and youth education is a necessity; (3) There is a wide variation from parish to parish on what New Evangelization is; (4) There is a spirit of cooperation in some cases among parishes; (5) Parishes appreciate the bishop attending and presiding at the installation of a new pastor; (6) Steubenville does it right when it comes touching the hearts of the youth; and (7) Steubenville's approach to the Sacrament of Reconciliation was to acknowledge we make mistakes, and we need to fix them. DPC By-Law Discussion: The bishop has made minor revisions to the DPC by-laws to more accurately reflect the actions of the council. Updated copies will be available for the members at the December 2012 meeting for review. Officer Selections: The bishop has selected Mary Rosten as chairperson, Joe Domitrovich as vice-chairperson, and Connee Sagataw as member at large to serve the council.

13 High School Curriculum: Denise Foye, from the Department for Faith Formation and Education, updated the council on the status of the high school faith formation curriculum being developed by the diocese. The curriculum will contain 6 pods for each of the 4 years of high school for a total of 24 pods. Each session within the pod will have a short piece of wisdom from a saint or from the catechism, an objective to achieve for the session, and will include a section on apologetics. The diocese is evaluating different textbooks, but may rather suggest reference guides to utilize to support the curriculum. Denise Foye is anticipated the curriculum will be complete by the end of New Evangelization / Year of Faith: Bishop Sample led the discussion on New Evangelization. "We want everyone to fall in love with Jesus", said the bishop. "Unfortunately we don't talk and share about Jesus. We need to introduce the person of Jesus to others, but we're not ready enough to do that. Before we go out to evangelize, we need to be strengthened first", concluded the bishop. As the year of faith begins, the bishop has issued his pastoral letter on the New Evangelization and Year of Faith entitled, We Wish to See Jesus, which outlines the seven pastoral priorities, the three "fronts" in which the battle for the salvation of souls will occur, and the four moments the diocese as a whole will celebrate during this year of faith corresponding to the four parts of the Holy Mass. To support the New Evangelization and raise awareness during this Year of Faith, the bishop is asking for personal prayer and sacrifice. He is also appealing for communal prayer and sacrifice by abstaining from meat on all Fridays during this Year of Faith, and also by praying the rosary once per week. HHS Mandate and Lawsuit: Bishop Sample indicated insurance companies have been given until August 2013 to comply with the HHS mandate. Since the diocese is self insured through Michigan Catholic Conference, they would have to provide morally objectionable coverage beginning in August 2013, which the diocese can not provide. Our diocese, along with 42 other institutions from across the country, are involved in the lawsuit to overturn the mandate. The bishop indicated the case may make it to the Supreme Court. Faithful Citizenship: The bishop mentioned he will have four columns in the UP Catholic leading up to the November 6, 2012 election. The last article will articulate that not all issues have the same weight or seriousness and as a result some issues are more important than others. We can not support and vote for a candidate that favors intrinsic evils. Canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha: Three members of the Hannahville tribe, including DPC member Connee Sagataw, will spend seven days in Rome, and be in attendance at the canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, The council asked if she could discuss her experiences from the trip at the December 2012 meeting. Marching Orders: Mary Rosten requested the DPC members discuss, during their parish visits, the New Evangelization and the Year of Faith. Closing Blessing and Adjourn: Bishop Sample gave his blessing and the meeting was adjourned at 3:30 pm.

17 7 December 2012 Dear Father, I am very excited to be collaborating with our Offices of Faith Formation and Youth Ministry in organizing a Totus Tuus Mission Team for our diocese this coming summer. This program offers a vibrantly Catholic summer experience not only for the K-8 group, but also for the high schoolers. Our team will be able to visit eight different parishes or parish clusters in the course of the summer, from June 9 August 10 th, with the July 4 th week off. Three parishes have already committed to hosting the team for a week (Menominee; Bessemer/Wakefield/Marenisco; and Ontonagon), so there are five slots remaining. Many of my brother seminarians at Mundelein from other dioceses had been Totus Tuus missionaries, but this past summer I had the opportunity to see a team from the Diocese of LaCrosse in action at Holy Family Parish in Ontonagon. I was thoroughly impressed by the evident enthusiasm, the quality of the catechesis, and the profound spirit of joy that pervaded both the missionaries and the young people they were serving. That evening I was able to be part of the high schoolers Eucharistic Holy Hour, and to hear many devout and heartfelt confessions. This program is profoundly, joyfully, even exuberantly Catholic, and offers young people an experience full of energy and truth. It makes very effective use of our core beliefs, practices, and traditions: the Eucharist, Confession, the Saints, and the Rosary. The games, skits, and activities engage the young people on many levels. We expect the cost to each parish or parish cluster to be significant, around $1700, but this provides a program that runs 9 am 3 pm Monday - Friday for K-6 children, and from 7-9 pm Sunday - Thursday for the Jr. high and high school youth. The mission team provides most of the direct teaching and planning, while the parish provides the missionaries with host families and meals, and the lunch and snacks each day. From what I ve seen of many good Vacation Bible School programs, it involves a much less elaborate scale of planning, and does not require large teams of volunteers willing to put in long hours, while it results in many more hours of instruction, fellowship, and prayer. The program originated in the Diocese of Wichita, and we will follow their schema with whatever necessary and prudent local adaptations. Please contact me if you have any questions or are interested in registering your parish for this program! Weeks will be scheduled on a first come-first serve basis. God Bless, Fr. Ben Hasse, Pastor St. Sebastian, Bessemer Immaculate Conception, Wakefield St. Catherine, Marenisco benjhasse@yahoo.com Cell Phone:

18 Dear Directors of Religious Education, I am Angie Mazurek, the Director of Religious Education at St. Sebastian Parish in Bessemer. I am excited to share some information with you about a summer parish program called Totus Tuus. It is a week-long totally Catholic experience for your youth from grades 1 12! Totus Tuus means Totally Yours which was the motto of Pope John Paul ll. It was taken from St. Louis de Monfort s True Devotion to Mary, and it signifies our desire to give ourselves totally to Jesus through Mary. The summer program is dedicated to sharing the Gospel and the promotion of the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, witness, and Eucharistic worship. The five pillars of Totus Tuus are: 1. The Eucharist 2. Marian Devotion 3. Catechetical Instruction 4. Vocational Discernment 5. Fun! I had heard of Totus Tuus and was interested in getting a team to come to my parish. Last summer I found out that a team was going to be at Holy Family in Ontonagon and my kids and I went to check it out. I was really impressed with the team and the solid Catholic teachings that were presented throughout the day. There was daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, teachings on Mary and the Rosary, and the saints. There was a program during the day for grades 1-6 that went from 9am-3pm. There was also a program for junior and senior high school students in the evenings from 7:00 pm 9:00 pm. My kids loved the program and were disappointed that we couldn t stay all week!! After seeing the program I knew that I wanted my youth to have this experience. I have led vacation bible schools every summer for the past 6 years, and I know the amount of work that goes into the week! There is the planning, organizing, decorating, and getting volunteers. Seeing the Totus Tuus team in action the decision to host a team was a no-brainer! This team literally comes into your parish and puts on an awesome Catholic packed week and all I have to do is provide housing, meals for the team, and lunch and snacks during the day?! Wow!
