BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL COLLECTION (CHMA), APRIL 26, 2015 THE WEEK BEFORE THE APPEAL (BULLETIN ROOM PERMITTING) The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place the weekend of April 26th. One way that this appeal works to strengthen home mission dioceses in the United States is by funding seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, where educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week s appeal. THE WEEK OF THE APPEAL Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place this weekend in the second collection, and supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries,

10 Page 10 of 14 including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this appeal and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home. THE WEEK AFTER THE APPEAL Thank you for your generous support of last week s Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Your contributions will help strengthen the Church at home and will help ensure that the Gospel is spread across the United States. To learn more about home missions funding and who the appeal helps, please visit and search Catholic Home Missions. MARQUETTE DIOCESAN PRIESTS RETIREMENT COLLECTION, APRIL 26, 2015 THE WEEK BEFORE THE COLLECTION (BULLETIN ROOM PERMITTING) The Diocese of Marquette is blessed with many senior priests (those who are no longer assigned to a parish). These men make present Christ, the Good Shepherd, not only in what they do, but in who they are. Many of them continue to give of themselves in countless ways of service for which we are grateful. During his years of priestly ministry, a diocesan priest is supported mainly by a parish community. The retirement years can be difficult for these men who may dedicate as many as 50 years or more of their lives to caring for and ministering to others. No longer supported by their parish communities, some rely on minimal Social Security benefits and their pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund. On the Fourth Sunday of Easter, April 26 th weekend, all parishes and missions in the diocese will take up a special collection to support our priests retirement fund. THE WEEK OF THE COLLECTION Retired priests of the Diocese of Marquette receive health insurance benefits, automobile insurance and a monthly pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund. Diocesan priests live independently during their retirement, and they use their pension for basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation. Parishes are assessed an annual amount per priest serving at the parish. These assessments, plus other growth in the St. Joseph Association, have fallen short of what is needed to provide necessary benefits to our priests. With a large number of priests nearing retirement, and skyrocketing costs for medical services, prescription drugs, long-term care and gaps in Medicare coverage, there is a pressing need to provide necessary benefits to our priests. All parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette will participate in a special collection the weekend of April 26th to help bridge the gap. It is essential that we

11 Page 11 of 14 ensure adequate retirement and health coverage in the years ahead for our priests. Please return your collection envelope during next weekends Masses. THE WEEK AFTER THE COLLECTION Last weekend, our parish and all parishes and missions throughout our diocese took up a special collection to support our priests retirement fund, called the St. Joseph Association. The St. Joseph Association, pays the monthly pension, health and auto insurance for retired priests of the diocese. Thank you for your support of our retired priests. Physical Examination Allowance is charged to the parish/institution and is reimbursable for expenses actually incurred up to $150 above that which the health insurance plan covers. Reimbursement is through the use of the Priest Accountable Reimbursement Plan OFFERINGS FOR WEEKEND AND WEEKDAY ASSISTANCE: 1. The Bishops of the Province have determined and established that the Mass Offering will be $ Pastoral care should always be exercised so that the Mass intentions of the poor are not neglected. The Mass offerings are payable to the parish and not directly to the priests who are receiving $3,000 in lieu of Mass offerings (see above). 2. The reimbursement for weekend assistance in addition to the mileage and Mass Offerings is $50.00 per Mass for priests in senior status or for those without a parochial assignment. For priests with a parochial assignment, the reimbursement is $45.00 per Mass if the assistance is in addition to his own parochial duties and is $25.00 per Mass if the assistance is in place of his parochial duties. Mileage is paid at the current IRS rate. By law, a priest may retain the offering for only one Mass in a given day. Bination and trination offerings are retained by the parish by order of the Bishop (C. 951). Those priests who are receiving $3,000 in lieu of Mass offerings (see above) are not entitled to retain any additional Mass offerings for weekend or weekday Masses. 3. The reimbursement for weekday assistance is $20.00 per Mass plus mileage and Mass offering for those entitled to the Mass offering. 4. Reimbursement for the Sacrament of Penance is $20.00 plus mileage. 5. The maximum allowable for a live-in replacement during the absence of a pastor is the equivalent of the pastor s salary for the time of replacement. 6. Charity would dictate that special consideration should be given by those priests offering assistance to parishes, which have limited financial resources. The assistance scale outlined above may be burdensome for some parishes. A priest should not be denied the need for time away from the parish because of the parish s inability to meet this scale. The above schedule of Offerings for Weekend and Weekday Assistance was approved by the Priests Council and the Bishop of the Diocese of Marquette at the regular Priests Council Meeting of December 13, ******************* By means of this general decree, I hereby establish the above schedule as particular law within the ecclesiastical region of the Diocese of Marquette and as binding upon the faithful of the same Diocese of Marquette, according to the norms of the Code of Canon Law (1983). Signed before me this 12th day of March, 2015 at the Chancery in Marquette, Michigan. Most Reverend John F. Doerfler Bishop of Marquette Rev. Daniel Moll, Chancellor Diocese of Marquette
