1 October 2015 First Press A publication of the First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, NJ Prayer From the Pastor One of the things we stress a lot here at FPC is the need to put our faith into action. Most of the time, when people hear that, what comes to mind is mission trips or serving the poor or serving the church. Those are all wonderful things. But another way we put our faith into action is through spiritual disciplines such as daily Bible reading and prayer. Prayer is a critical discipline that many people either fail to appreciate or misunderstand. Prayer is not the mere sending up of a wish list to God; prayer is the means by which we deepen our relationship with God. Inside this Issue: Church Contact Information From the Choir Room 3 Children, Youth, & Family Connection News for the Congregation Other News 8 9 People You Know 10 September Calendar 11 All relationships are centered around communication. You can hardly have a best friend with whom you are never in contact. Likewise, our relationship with God is fully and completely dependent on regular communication. Through prayer, we understand the presence of God and feel closer to God. John Calvin, the theologian who laid the basis for Presbyterianism, wrote this in his classic work, The Institutes of the Christian Religion: But, someone will say, does God not know, even without being reminded, both in what respect we are troubled and what is expedient for us, so that it may seem in a sense superfluous that he should be stirred up by our prayers as if he were drowsily blinking or even sleeping until he is aroused by our voice? But they who thus reason do not observe to what end the Lord instructed his people to pray, for he ordained it not so much for his own sake as for ours. (III.xx.3) What Calvin said, in a nutshell, is that it is insufficient for us to presume that God knows what is on our hearts; rather, we must remember that God gave us prayer for our sake. To have the ability to be in relationship with God is a great gift. Calvin warned that many perfunctorily intone prayers after a set form, as if discharging a duty to God (III.xx.6). Unfortunately, this is the way we often teach children to pray by memorizing set prayers. While this is good for getting the youngest children into the habit of prayer, far too often these same children are not taught to expand their understanding of prayer into the kind of conversational dialogue that mature prayer can become. These early habits, well-learned, can unintentionally morph into the belief that prayer must consist of carefully scripted, predetermined words, said out of obligation each night before bed. continued on page 2

2 continued from page 1 ejoice in hope be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Romans 12:12 Why do we pray? Are we good enough to pray? Where and how should we pray? What are the expected results of prayer? These are common questions about prayer. Pastor Kellie and I have been working on a three-week sermon series on prayer that will answer these questions. Scheduled for October 18, 25, and November 1, we will be encouraging you to deepen your prayer life. We want each of you, as Christians, to deepen your personal relationship with God. This is accomplished through prayer. In prayer, you not only raise up your concerns, you celebrate your joys, vent your frustrations and most important of all, in prayer you listen for God s guidance. Prayer is an integral part of bringing faith into our everyday lives. Please try to attend the series on prayer remember, the same message is preached at both the 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. services and be ever more devoted to centering your life around your faith. 3 From the Choir Room CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT CHOIR The Chancel Choir will begin rehearsing music for the Candlelight Carol Service after worship on November 8. If you would like to sing in the choir for this event on December 13, come to rehearsals on Sundays at 12:15 p.m. in the choir room. HYMNS OF THE FAITH Here are more of the reasons why singing hymns in church so enriches our worship experience. The great hymns give our worship a sense of majesty and beauty. The great cathedrals were built to convey a sense of the greatness and majesty of God. Their vaulted ceilings were designed to direct our attention upward. Often their acoustics gave one the feeling of being part of a heavenly choir. Many of the early hymns were written to complement the sublime sense inspired by those cathedrals. Though we seldom build cathedrals anymore, and though our worship has become more personal and intimate, there is still a place for being deeply moved by our Creator's majesty. Who can ever forget, having sung it even once, the sense of God's greatness evoked by such hymns as "How Great Thou Art," or the deep appreciation summoned by "Great Is Thy Faithfulness"? The great hymns embed Christian truths in our minds and hearts. Some say they can't memorize; as a result they seldom attempt to commit God's Word in their hearts. Without our even realizing it, the hymns do that committing for us. Christians who couldn't quote 10 verses of Scripture could easily sing dozens of hymns that are based on or directly drawn out of Scripture. There are any number of Christian concepts tucked away in our minds ready to be pulled out when we need them, and they were put there by the repeated singing of the great hymns. Thanks to our hymns we know that God is faithful, that He provides a firm foundation for our lives, that we should "Take Time to Be Holy," and that God's love will not let us go. Our hymns teach new truth every time we sing them. 90 SECOND SERMON Check out the 90 Second Sermon a brief, engaging version of the sermon being produced each week by Rich and Kellie. Well-suited for sharing with friends via or Facebook, we hope you ll find it interesting not just for yourself but as a way to start faith conversations with friends and family. Access the videos from our preliminary website at CROSSROADS Come and check out the Crossroads contemporary worship that meets every Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel. It s casual, lively, and fun, with a great band (led by Jane Kelly Williams) and the same basic sermon as Sunday morning (with multimedia enhancements). 6 FPC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Tuesdays, October 27, November 3, November 10 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the East Room Are you interested in becoming a better leader, a better manager, a better employee? One of the interesting experiences Rev. Hong had this summer was attending the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit. Started in 1995 by Willow Creek Community Church (outside of Chicago), one of America s largest churches (26,000 in weekly attendance), the Summit is simulcast to hundreds of locations around the world, and now has a combined audience of about 240,000! Their focus is on sharpening the skills of leaders, believing that the Church has the most important mission in the world, and therefore the Church needs all of us to be best leaders we can be. Led by Rich and Kellie, this is an opportunity for you to watch three of the best presentations and we will discuss them. You are encouraged to purchase their books on Amazon, but this is not required for the class. The three sessions are independent of one another join us for all three or just for one. October 13: Givers and Takers Professor Adam Grant, Wharton School of Business. What is your relational style? Are you a giver, a matcher, or a taker? What works best? How can you fine-tune your organization to create an environment of cooperation rather than competition? The answers may surprise you. His book is Give and Take. October 27: Feedback Sheila Heen, Harvard Law School s Negotiation Project. How are you at giving feedback? Receiving feedback? Feedback is how we find out how others perceive us, and becoming better at being a feedback giver and a feedback receiver is important for the life of our organization. Sheila is with the Harvard Negotiation Project, which produced one of the most widely-read books in business, Getting to Yes. Her latest book is Thanks for the Feedback. November 3: Rising Strong Professor Brené Brown, University of Houston. Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. She asked herself, What do these people with strong and loving relationships, leaders nurturing creativity, artists pushing innovation, and clergy walking with people through faith and mystery have in common? The answer was clear: They recognize the power of emotion and they re not afraid to lean in to discomfort. She is the author of two #1 bestsellers, The Power of Vulnerability and Daring Greatly. Her latest book is Rising Strong. DOROTHY VANDERWERF: NOW DIRECTOR OF CARE MINISTRIES After 20 years as Activities Director, we are pleased to announce that Dorothy VanderWerf is making a transition into a more focused role: Director of Care Ministries. In this position, Dorothy will bring her strengths to those areas of our congregation where we deliver care, comfort and support to you. She will continue to resource the Board of Deacons, COPE (our caregiver support group), the labyrinth, and the FPC Aging Well programs (our ministry to older adults). She is also being tasked with creating new systems of support for those persons who can no longer attend regularly, as well as reaching out to those who have fallen away from our community. She will also now be working less than full-time, allowing her to spend more time with her family. As we grow, we are aligning staff responsibilities more closely with our emerging needs. We are in the process of searching for a part-time Family Ministries Coordinator, restoring an updated version of the Christian Education Director position that has been vacant for years. INTERESTED IN BECOMING A MEMBER OF FPC? Membership is simply an affirmation of your desire to declare that this is your church home at this time in your life. Persons wishing to join are invited to meet with members of the Session (church elders) on Sunday, October 4 at either 12:45 p.m. or 5:00 p.m., in the East Room. New members will then be received in both worship services on Sunday, October 11. ADULTS PLAY BASKETBALL IN OCTOBER on Thursdays in Elmore Hall from 7:30 9:30 p.m. The basketball players collect a donation of $2 each night to benefit the Bergen Family Center. Contact Philip Soo who coordinates this Basketball Fellowship at: soorealtors@gmail.com. Come, enjoy good friends and a fun game on October 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. Page 6 October 2015

We re about to order offering envelopes for 2016, and here are some things you may not know First, you don t actually need envelopes to have your offering recorded unless you give cash. If you pay by check, your envelope number, written on the Memo line, is all that is needed. If you would like to be assigned an envelope number, please ask Elder Sandy Bishop at sgbishop@earthlink.net. Second, if you are used to giving weekly and miss a week, it is actually easier for the counters if you give more in a single payment rather than making a separate payment for each week. Third, know that you can take advantage of alternative means of giving. You can give online or on your smartphone through our app or the PushPay app. You can also set up your online banking service to send us a check (at no additional cost to you). In all cases, just note your envelope number on the gift. If you don t want physical envelopes for 2016, please send your name and envelope number to the Church Office, office@englewoodpres.org. You ll still keep your assigned envelope number and receive a contribution statement at the end of the year. Thank you! First Press Page 7

Examples are areas struck by the Ebola epidemic, homeowners affected by the California fires, ISIS refugees, children from Honduras, northern Iraq, Uganda, etc. They also invite the children to enroll in "The Greatest Journey", a 12-lesson program to learn about following Christ and sharing their faith with others. There were over 10 million shoe boxes collected worldwide in 2014, including almost 8 million in the US. Operation Christmas Child is a non-denominational Christian organization led by Franklin Graham since We are very excited to help this ministry. 9 WELCOME TABLE Think back to when you first came to a service at First Presbyterian Church of Englewood. How were you greeted? Did someone you didn't know say welcome to our church I'm happy to meet you? Or were you invisible, no one paying attention to you, not welcoming you to the church community? Now think of other churches you attended. Was the experience better or worse? Could it be that part of the reason you attend FPC Englewood is because you were made comfortable and welcome when you first attended? For a few years we have had a welcome table at coffee and conversation and we encourage visitors to fill out a gold card and stop by the table to receive a gift. However, many visitors leave the service without coming to coffee and conversation and we are not able to adequately greet them. We will now have an additional welcome table in the lobby of the church. When a visitor arrives they will be greeted with a big hello and it is nice to meet you. They will then get a FPC Welcome Gift with items about the church and some fun things for the family. I am asking for members of the church to volunteer to be at this table. We are looking to schedule someone for a full month; however, if you feel that would be too much we can certainly use you for a week or two during the month. You would need to be at the table at 10:45 and then briefly right after the service ends. Please reach out to Rich, Kellie, Dorothy or me and let us know if you can help with this extremely important part of the church's growth. - Paul Platek FAITH AND FINANCE - A CLASSIC WIN-WIN For most of us the word "philanthropist" conjures images of wealthy titans like Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller. Or it could be modern-day figures like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or Mark Zuckerberg. Billionaires all, they have donated or have committed to giving away the bulk of their fortunes during their lifetimes. Despite the social focus on billionaire philanthropists, the realty of philanthropy is quite different. The vast majority of charitable contributions in the U.S., which totaled $335 billion in 2013, come from the rest of us. In fact, 95% of American households donate to charity annually. A major concern we all face is how much can we prudently give without jeopardizing our standard of living. One solution to this problem is to give through a bequest, but doing so is generally less effective than giving while we are alive. Perhaps most surprising is that the majority of charitable giving (75%) is done during one's lifetime, a preference which mirrors the actions of benefactors such as Bill Gates. What is the best way to give while not jeopardizing our standard of living? One way is through a charitable remainder trust (CRT). Through CRTs a donor may contribute appreciated property (real estate, stocks, etc.) to a tax exempt irrevocable trust and receive an income for a set period of time or for life and then the remainder passes to the charity of your choice at the end of the trust's term. This is a true, win-win situation. When you make the donation to the trust you do not have to pay tax on the capital gains of the investment and you get an immediate tax deduction for the charitable donation. The trust will sell the investment and reinvest the proceeds to generate the income for the donor. The designated charity will then get the remaining balance at the end of the term. This is just one example of how you can give to charity while you are still alive and at the same time improve your cash flow and pay less taxes, a true win-win. If you are not comfortable giving away assets while you are alive naming a charity in your will is a good solution. Feel free to reach out to me should you want to discuss your particular situation. -Paul Platek, Stewardship Chair WALK THE LABYRINTH ON OCT. 16 & 18 The indoor Labyrinth will be open for walking, meditation, and prayer in the Chapel on Friday, October 16, 4 7 p.m. and on Sunday, October 18, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Enter the labyrinth through the East Room where members of the Labyrinth Committee will greet you and if you are new to walking the labyrinth, they will show you what to do. During these nice fall days, enjoy the Labyrinth on the Lawn located in the back of the building just outside Elmore Hall. First Press Page 9
