Bingo Social This Sunday Come Join us for the NEW & IMPROVED BINGO Sunday Feb 10 Early Birds start at 12:30 and will pay out at least $15/game 15 Regular games paying $30 There will also be BONZAI, SPECIALS and QUICKIES. Oh, don t forget about the final game JACKPOT. The kitchen will be open serving hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, chips, pop, water and coffee. So come join the fun and try your luck winning larger prizes. Admission is only $15 for the 15 game boards. The more who play, the more will be the payouts. Eric s Music Notes In the first reading God calls Isaiah. In the gospel reading Jesus calls Peter. In Psalm 138 we call upon God. We thank God for building up strength within us. We express our confidence that God will complete the work begun in us. Together the reading, gospel, and psalm epitomize our entire relationship with God and Christ. God calls us, sinners that we are, to do the work of Christ in the world. Do you trust that God will accomplish in you what God is asking of you? (Cry Out With Joy, GIA Publications) Our Opening Hymn, Holy Holy Holy, is a very familiar song of praise of the Holy Trinity, which is sung by many Christian denominations. In our Preparation Hymn, Seek Ye First, we are reminded that if we trust in God, and seek Him first, above all else, that God will provide all we need. Whatever we seek, we will find. Whatever we ask, will be given. However, we are not to focus on our worldly desires, but on the Word. In our Communion Hymn, Here I Am, Lord, we hear that the Lord hears our cry. He bears our pain, tends to the poor, saves and speaks to sinners. Our response is to be his voice and hands in the world. To be willing to go where he sends us, to bring Him to those we encounter in our daily lives. Several weeks ago, we sang God, We Praise You, a version of Te Deum laudamus. Today, we sing a traditional setting of this text, to the tune Grosser Gott: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name. May the Lord, who began in Galilee, continue his Gospel story in you. Choir rehearsal continues this Thursday, February 14, at 6:30 PM, in Church. New members are welcome. Join us as we begin to prepare for Lent, Holy Week and our Tenebrae Service. 4 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Our next class will be on Sunday, February 17 from 9:00 to 10:45 am. Please pick your child up in the hall and attend Mass as a family. Our next Youth Mass will be held on Sunday, March 3 please encourage your child to participate. Bingo! There will be a bingo on Sunday, March 10 which will benefit our Faith Formation program! The annual Winter Retreat provides an opportunity for our young people to take time out of their busy lives to slow down and be with God for one faith-filled weekend. Please visit the Diocese website to view pictures of past retreats. Bishop Malesic will lead an evening for teens and parents How do I make my faith a priority in this culture? Tonight, at Our Lady of Grace Parish, Greensburg. Teens will gather in the church at 6 p.m.; teens and parents will gather in the parish hall at 7:15. A social will follow. The event is open to students in grades 6-12 and their parents or guardians and is sponsored by Our Lady of Grace, St. Benedict and Holy Cross parishes. Please consider attending and let Cheryl know as soon as possible. NCYC REGISTRATION is still underway until all busses are filled, less than 100 spots are left! Please consider this trip for your children grades It is an energizing, fun, faith filled trip with other youth from our Diocese. They take 200 students from our Diocese on this trip! Contact Cheryl for more information. LITTLE ROCK BIBLE STUDY The next meeting of the Little Rock Bible Study Group will be on Wednesday, February 13 th. The group meets in the Social Hall weekly on Wednesdays from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Please attend a session and learn the details of this year s study. All are welcome to attend. Watch the bulletin for more news about the Bible study. The members of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers are planning a Sweetheart Bake Sale and Home-made Soup Sale in the Social Hall on the weekend of February 9 th and 10 th following the Masses. Stop at the Bale Sale to see what special treats the ladies are offering. The assortment of cookies, cake, candy, bread, Soup and other goodies is always delicious! In order to get the information formatted and ready for the printer I must have it no later than Friday, the week before the news item is to be printed. Please keep that in mind when requesting items for publication in the bulletin. Also if anyone would like to submit and maintain a list of active duty service men/women, I would be pleased to publish that list. LOW GLUTEN HOSTS Low Gluten Hosts are available for persons who are unable to receive regular Host at communion. If you need to receive a low gluten Host you must see the Priest before Mass and let him know of your need. He will instruct you about the special procedure you must follow to insure that you will receive the low gluten Host. If you suffer from severe Celiac disease or are highly sensitive to wheat you are welcome to ask about the Host and the procedure prior to attending Mass. Call the office and make an appointment to talk to Fr. Bump.

5 CANNED AND NON-PERISHABLE FOOD There will be a collection of canned and non-perishable food taken up to supplement the local food bank here in West Newton. Their supply has been very low and last month they had no canned goods at all to distribute. A collection container will be available in the vestibule for your donations. Volunteers are also needed to work at the Food Band on the second Saturday of each month. Contact Bill Ryckman for more information about volunteering. BIBLE STUDY AT EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD CHURCH, MONESSEN Epiphany of Our Lord parish will take a closer look at the Gospel of Luke during our 6 week bible study. All are invited to participate. The program will begin on Monday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. There is a $10 program fee to cover the workbook. The Gospel of Luke is proclaimed during Liturgical Year C (our current year). Taking a closer look at some of St. Luke s writings will enrichen our understanding through this year. You may call the Epiphany Church office to sign up ( ) or you may sign-up on our website: Consider signing up even if you cannot attend all of the sessions as you will have access to the videos online. TRANSFORMATION MEN S PRAYER GATHERING AT SAINT VINCENT BASILICA CRYPT FEB. 18 The Transformation men s prayer gathering will be held at Saint Vincent Basilica Crypt from 6:45-9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18. Gather with men from the diocese for an evening of fellowship, prayer and spiritual renewal. The evening includes leadership development, adoration, music, spiritual growth, reconciliation, small group discussions and prayer. THE WELL MEN S CONFERENCE TO BE HELD MARCH 30 The diocese s Men s Ministry Team will host THE WELL Men s Conference on March 30 at Greensburg Central Catholic. The event includes workshops, open discussions, the sacrament of reconciliation and adoration, and it concludes with Mass celebrated by Bishop Malesic. The keynote speaker will be Mike McCoy, an Erie native who is a former Notre Dame and NFL star. Register at 21ST ANNUAL COMMUNITIES OF SALT AND LIGHT AWARDS DINNER APRIL 25 Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg will host the 21st annual Communities of Salt and Light Awards Dinner April 25 at 6 p.m. at Stratigos Banquet Centre, North Huntingdon. Bishop Malesic will present the awards for humanitarianism, philanthropy and outstanding human services organization. All net proceeds benefit people in need in the diocese s four counties. Contact Heather Rady, director of community relations and special events, at for sponsorship information. FEBRUARY 10, /10/2019 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Sts. Cyril & Methodius Seasonal Reflection These brothers by birth became brothers in mission. Cyril and Methodius were born to a Greek diplomat in the 800s. The two brothers served in local governmental posts before each withdrew to a monastery. Their lives changed when the political leadership in Eastern Europe what is now Ukraine requested priests who spoke the native Slavic languages. Cyril and Methodius had proven themselves as able administrators and holy men, so they were sent as missionaries. First, Cyril invented an alphabet. This became the foundation for what is now used today and is still called the Cyrillic alphabet! Next, the brothers translated the Gospels, the Psalms, and other liturgical books into the native language of the people. Their work spread across Eastern Europe. God indeed raises up saints for their times! FEBRUARY 10, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOSPEL MEDITATION Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God, you showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship?
