1 As I was reading through the book of Proverbs as all of us were doing the month of August I was reminded of what happened during a Wisdom Literature class that I took several years ago. The professor gave us an assignment to write our own proverb. We were supposed to share them with the class the next time we met. When the class came together we shared our wisdom. I can t recall any of the proverbs including mine except one. The student named Scott was notorious for not completing his homework assignments and, as normal, he forgot this assignment. Several of us watched as he fidgeted about in his chair, scratched his head, and began to panic as his turn approached. The professor called on him, Scott, he said, lets hear your proverb. What wisdom do you have to share with the class? There was an awkward silence as the class stared at him. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity to him but was in reality a few seconds, he said the only proverb I remember from my classmates. He said, He who does not study has nothing important to say. I think that is brilliant. It has stuck with me for years. Let me ask you if you think that s true? If you are an attorney but don t study the law do you have anything important to say about the law? If you are an engineer, a teacher, a doctor, a mechanic, a... well you name it. If you don t study, chances are you don t have anything important to say. If that is true in our professions, then can it be true in regards to our faith? Again, I believe that the answer is, yes, its true. I believe that the Apostle Paul charged a young minister by the name of Timothy to study to show thyself approved unto God,...rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV) A better translation of that verse is, Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved rightly handling the word of truth. (R.S.V.) Several times in the Scriptures we are told to study, meditate, think on, devote ourselves to the apostles doctrine, and hide His word in our hearts. The Bereans were thought of highly by God because of their study of the word. May we all be Berean. I want to encourage you to get involved in one of our Bible Studies. We have several to choose from and we have several planned. We believe that Bible Study will motivate us to become the hands and feet of Jesus. Maybe Scott was right. What do you think? 2 Date: September Location: The Parlor Sermon Series Bible Basics Most people want to read the Bible but they don t do it very often. Surprisingly, the number one reason is not that they don t have time. The biggest reason is that most people don t understand it. This series will teach us how to approach the Bible. This is a great introduction and an opportunity to invite a friend. Beginning September 23rd Stand Firm: Studies in Second Timothy John Stott writes, "I have been impressed afresh by the timeliness of today of what the apostle writes, especially for Christians. For our era is one of theological and moral confusion, even of apostasy. And the apostle summons us, as he summoned Timothy, to be strong, brave and steadfast." He wrote that statement over 40 years ago! Come and study the Word of God anew as we look at what it means to Stand Firm Till the End. Predestination, Chosen, Spiritual Depravity, The fiery arrows of Satan, Armor, Prayer. Ephesians teaches that we are saved by grace through faith! We do not earn our salvation it is a gift of God. God saved us so that He can work through us. Simply put, God gives it; man lives it. But, how does He equip us? We will learn how to become equipped for God s service so that we can better serve Him. Date: September 9 Location: The Sanctuary Characters Count Most people want to read the Bible but they don t do it very often. Surprisingly, the number one reason is not that they don t have time. The biggest reason is that most people don t understand it. This series will teach us how to approach the Bible. This is a great introduction and an opportunity to invite a friend. Jr. Church: Follow Jesus Date: September, October, November The elementary age children meet in the sanctuary with the adults and then the 1st - 4th grade students are dismissed for Jr. Church during the Offering Time. Young students will learn to follow Jesus as they experience stories from the Gospels. Through a variety of activities, children will worship, follow, and tell about Jesus. Wednesday Night Explorations Acts: The Gospel Unleashed One person argues, It s about singing on Sunday. If the music isn t good then I haven t worshiped. No, it s about the children s ministries, another exclaims. Still another will proclaim; No! It s about helping the poor. And the arguments go on, endlessly. You have your view of what the Church should be and do. We all have a view. Do you want to know the True Purpose of the Church? This study is for you. Make time to study as we learn how to Unleash the Gospel. Ages Jesus and Me Location: Heritage Annex, Leader: Kay Soderstrom 1-3 grade - Life of Jesus Location: Room 4, Leader: Sue O Banion Page 2

4 Tuesday Truth Seekers Location: The Parlor Instructor: Ken Weaver Dates: Begins September 11 Time: Tuesday 9:30 a.m. Unshakable Hope by Max Lucado Is what you're anchored to stronger than what you're going through? The answer to that question changes everything. In Unshakable Hope, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Max Lucado offers encouraging, practical guidance for overcoming difficult circumstances and gaining inner peace, building resolve, and walking into a better future. We've never been more educated and entertained. We have technological tools our parents could only dream of, and we are saturated with information, amusement, and recreation. Yet more than ever, we are starving for hope. In fact, more people than ever are orchestrating their own deaths. In America alone, the suicide rate has increased 24 percent in fewer than twenty years. If a disease saw such a spike, it would be deemed an epidemic. People are dying from a lack of hope. After forty years of counseling and ministry, Max Lucado has learned that nothing lifts the desperate, weary heart like the promises of God. In a world full of despair, depression, anxiety, and instability, we do not need more opinions or hunches; we need the definitive declarations of our mighty and loving God. Unshakable Hope examines twelve of God's promises that Max has turned to over the years to encourage himself and others. Each chapter explores one significant promise and reveals how it will equip you to overcome challenging circumstances, experience lasting security, and make wise decisions. What are you anchored to--the circumstances of life or the promises of God? For every problem in life, God has given you a promise. Join Max as he takes a closer look at Scripture's unbreakable promises and shows you how to live with an unshakable hope. Ladies Monthly Meeting The September Ladies Monthly Meeting will be on Wednesday, September 5th, the 1st Wednesday of the month. The ladies will meet from 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. during the meal in the Small Classroom off the Fellowship Hall. Come and enjoy a time of fellowship, find out what events are coming up and get involved. Hope to see you there! Wednesday Evening ReNew 6:00 p.m. Meal will be provided every Wednesday Bible Study 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Night Explorations Acts: The Gospel Unleashed One person argues, It s about singing on Sunday. Each week, "Route 66" will introduce the children to a different book or group of books in the Bible. They will learn about the author, time frame, the key people, and the book's purpose. Activity pages and memory verses will help the children explore the Scriptures further. A Souvenir Scrapbook serves as a way to remember all of the different stops and to celebrate the journey. When this study is completed, each child will have their very own personal Souvenir Scrapbook which will be a great resource on reviewing the books of the Bible.
