1 May/June 2013 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 3 HILLCREST-BELLEFONTE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 400 HILLCREST AVENUE, WILMINGTON, DE A Message from Our Pastor Moving Forward in Christ Our last article, Moving Forward in Christ, was written just about the beginning of the Lenten Season! If we only knew what a spiritual journey would have this pastor and the congregation embark is too wondrous to tell. However for the sake of words on a paper I ll try to recap. First under the leadership of our Lay Leader, Sally Welch, we entered into a connectional teaching ministry with Pastor Carmela Evans and the members of Chester- Bethel UMC. Throughout the Lenten season we embarked on an eye opening Lenten journey, exploring Rev. Adam Hamilton s, 24 Hours That Changed the World. This spiritual offering gave the class new insights and information concerning the social, political and cultural nuances that impacted the life of Jesus and those around him. It truly was an opportunity in which we all, through the willingness to explore the passion of the Savior, through new eyes truly gave us soul satisfaction and we ultimately became more faithful in the end. And we cannot also dismiss the fun and fellowship the churches enjoyed as we prepared and shared meals for each other, with our overarching goal to support World Hunger Projects. It truly was a blessing to watch our Sacrifice Sunday campaign unfold under the leadership of Bill and Rosanna Goodwin. The church embarked upon nine weeks of faithful sacrifice to launch a Capital Campaign to supplement operating costs. Yet, beloved, this was more than a financial challenge, it was a testimony to the love and faithfulness of this congregation to trust God to fulfill our every need. God s mystery of faith was revealed on Sacrifice Sunday, April 14, This was a wondrous event in the life of the congregation, because the efforts made were from the heart, and they proved that this congregation is willing to Move Forward in Christ. During the Holy Week Vigil we were blessed first by the outstanding worship service and narrative by Brother Dan Murphy, produced by Musical Director, Nancy Gerney and theatrical director, Elaine Murphy. The inspiring music, solos, and dramas were truly awesome, and a real tribute to the Lord Jesus. Sister Diane Hill needs to be mentioned as she dutifully scheduled visitation for me as we attempted to either visit or have some form of communication with all those sick and shut-in during the Easter season. We thank God for her and every soul in the congregation. Isn t this Moving Forward in Christ? We were blessed to extend our spiritual journey, when were asked to participate in a Maundy Thursday and Good Friday service with Aldersgate UMC. What a joyous time in the Lord. What the Lord really did to surprise us was to extend Hamilton s 24 Hours That Changed the World to all adult classes, and our community class The Trustees took this time to repair the walls of the temple by first ordering mulch for Sister Elaine Murphy flower planting on Holy Saturday. Then they had the exhaust hood from over the kitchen stove repaired. Pastor Jay instituted a Biblical Education and Training Center at 12 noon on Fridays, and is looking to restructure the teen ministry. Isn t that Moving Forward in Christ? These events and coming events that are being planed are all part of the Lord God through the Holy Spirit, moving us all forward in Christ Jesus. Yours in Christ Jesus, Rev. Tony Arrington
2 PAGE 2 MAY/JUNE 2013 MUSIC MINISTRY/WORSHIP COMMISSION Nancy Gerney Director of Music JESUS IS THE ANSWER.. for the world today. Above Him there s no other, Jesus is the way.a song with a great reminder proclaiming that Jesus is the answer for our world today! The words of this song, shared by the HBUMC choir in April, reminds us we can serve Him with confidence, knowing that He will equip us to carry His light into a hurting and needy world. With the arrival of spring and the anticipation of summer, we experience a season of renewed life. The beauty of His creation blooms all around and just as He worked miracles long ago - He is still working miracles today. Let us glorify our King and take joy in all He has done for us. Many thanks to all who supported our music ministry on Palm Sunday, March 24 when HBUMC choir presented their Easter cantata, Amazing Love and on Easter Sunday, March 31 as the children s department shared Hallelujah with the congregation during worship. It brings great joy to see believers joining together to worship and praise our risen Lord. Therefore if anyone be in Christ, the old is gone and the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17 As we move into our summer schedule our choir will take a well-deserved break. We look forward to our special music selections. If you have a special gift you would like to share instrumental or vocal I would be thrilled to include you. My sincere appreciation goes to all of those who contribute their time and efforts to our music ministry. May the Lord richly bless you for your faithfulness. During our morning worship service on Mother s Day, Sunday, May 12 we will be celebrating our mothers and on Father s Day, June 16 we will be honoring our dads. Be sure and bring all of those very special moms and dads in your life out to church! The altar is still available for anyone wishing to place flowers in church in memory or honor of a loved one or for a special event. Please call Barbara in our church office, There is still a pressing need for volunteers to assist in preparation and coordination of the PowerPoint presentation. If you enjoy working on the computer and desire to participate in worship, please contact Nancy Gerney. As is our tradition at HBUMC during the summer months, the time for church service will move back to 9:30 AM starting June 9. This allows worship during the cooler morning hours and gives more time to enjoy the summer sunshine. No matter what else is on your schedule, start the day out right praising the Lord with your friends at church! We pray that as spring brings renewal and refreshment to your spirits, you will accept the challenge of reaching out in love to the community in your midst. Invite them to come worship and praise the Lord with you this Sunday. Invite them into His presence. He makes all things new. Nancy S. Gerney Director of Music

4 PAGE 4 MAY/JUNE 2013 EVANGELISM TASK FORCE TEAM Carolyn Grimes & Ellen Knapp, Co-Chairs What is the Evangelism Task Force Team (ETFT)? Evangelism has gotten a bad rap. Evangelism is labeled in all kinds of ways. We are all called to Evangelize, spreading the Good News of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus saith.i am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the father but by me. John 14:6 (kjv) The cares of this world are many but Jesus says Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me.and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:28 (kjv) Wow! What peace, what joy, in knowing that God truly does care about all of our problems. Evangelism is more than just one individual talking about his or her faith, it is a lifestyle! Our teams focus and accountability is not only to tell people about this Good News, but to help us to understand how we can have a true relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Our mission is to bring together people of all walks of life. We all still have problems. The bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 (kjv), Casting all your cares upon him, for he careth for you. John 15:7 (kjv) Jesus says If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. So please, won t you come magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. Come learn more about what Hillcrest-Bellefonte UMC is doing to promote Evangelism. Look forward to: May 19, 2013 Family and Friends Day at HBUMC, 12:00-1:30 pm Immediately after morning worship service there will be a celebration in Hillcrest Hall Light Brunch will be served Bring your families, friends, co-workers, neighbors and even invite people you don t know! A special love gift will be given to anyone that brings the most guests. You don t want to miss this one!!! SACRIFICE SUNDAY CONGRATULATIONS!!! So far we ve received almost $8, There is more to come. We should make this much. Thanks to all who helped with any part of the challenge. Lots of folks sacrificed during Lent. People helped with the Celebration luncheon. There was plenty of food for all. Thanks for the great food. I tried every dish and all were very good. This is the first time in many years that we had a campaign. And it was successful! THANK YOU! CHURCH DIRECTORY Yes, we are going to update the church directory. Diane Hill, Ginny Wayland, and Sally Welch will be working on it after conference. Plus anyone else who is willing to help. 5 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 3 PAGE 5 UNITED METHODIST WOMEN I hope you all have been thinking of FUND RAISERS. I m sending some information around. I picked one up from INTERSTATE BATTRRIK. There is a 50% profit on sales. How many of you never have the right battery when you need it. We all use them on a daily basis. Just about everything made today requires a battery. There will be our Bake Sale, which will be held at the same time of the Trustees Pig Roast. That date is to be determined. I spoke with the Trustees regarding our requests: 1. the light in the narthex bathroom, 2. the hand railing at the stairs where the light is errantly on, there is one problem with this, the railing might make the hallway less than the Fire Marshall will allow. They are working on each of these requests. I felt that last month, UMW Month, went rather well. 6 PAGE 6 MAY/JUNE ANNUAL CONFERENCE Conference Offering Each year we collect special offerings for me to take to the Annual Conference Meeting. Please think about the following funds and plan to do your giving on May 26 and June 2. Churches are encouraged to raise funds in advance and bring them to Annual Conference meeting. This year s appeal will support: Central Conference Pensions: The rest of the annual conferences are collecting to fund pensions for the pastors of the central conference. I ll have more information later. I do know that this conference has pledged a specific amount and this will be the third year of collecting. BOOM Scholarships: Pastors who are going through seminary can apply for money to help with their education. Remember Bill received money each summer to help pay his way. Even though Tony has his degrees, we need to help others to get theirs. Central Congo Partnership: We have been in partnership with the Congo for several years. We provide medical help and supplies and other things that are needed. We are now working with North Carolina and Eastern PA to provide these things. Either this year or next we will be sending a delegation to the Congo to do more removals of cataracts. I know we have the commitment of one eye surgeon who lives there and are looking for someone here in the US to go also. Judy Ingalls is helping get things together. Cindy Maser also works to provide some medical supplies. As you write your checks for this, you may designate your contributions to one or all. It does not need to be equally divided between the three groups. I thank you for all that you can do. For questions call Sally at or or at skdwelch@gmail.com. The following information was printed in the Jan./Feb. copy of the Interpreter. As of the end of November, the following grants were given to help the Hurricane Sandy survivors. Additional grants will continue to support immediate relief as well as long-term recovery. $10,000 each to the United Methodist Church of Cuba, North Carolina Annual Conference, Peninsula-Delaware Annual Conference, Eastern Pennsylvania Annual Conference, and New York Disaster Interfaith Services. $60,000 each to Greater New Jersey Annual conference and New York Annual Conference. All equaling $170,000. To quote, your money at work. For future donations: on line at -- click on donate by credit card, call by check, send to ADVANCE GCFA, P.O.
