1 The Beacon S P E C I A L P O I N T S O F I N T E R E S T : Bethany Presbyterian Church Newsletter V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 2 A U G U S T August Calendar Important information on Church Picnic WV Mission Trip To Whom Will You Go so that You Both Will Grow? You may have already heard that a new book from Dr. Seuss was released on Tuesday, July 28. What Pet Should I Get? will undoubtedly be another best seller in the long line of classic works by my favorite children s story author. It s amazing to think that, though Dr. Seuss died almost 25 years ago, the work he did then is still having a huge impact today! It makes me wonder what I am investing myself in, day in and day out? What kind of impact would your life leave in 25 years if you were to die? What are you working on? I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Voice for 2 Ministry Choir Info 3 Church Picnic 3 WV Mission 4 August Calendar Birthdays In Galatians 6:9 we are encouraged to, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Who knows, the proper time for the real impact of our lives, of our giving and our ministry may be 25 years down the road after we are long gone. There are so many opportunities coming up for you to make an impact in someone else s life. You can participate as a youth leader and invest in junior and senior high students during that time in life where they need some Jesus-loving mentors. You could jump in as a children s Sunday School teacher or lead a small group of elementary kids during LOGOS on Tuesday evenings. You may have gifts in communication and organization that God is calling you to use as the new LOGOS coordinator. You could start or join an adult small group or D- group and develop relationships with other adults that allow you to mutually grow in your faith! Whatever it is, the fall is approaching. Start praying now about what God is calling you to do and how He wants to work in you for your growth and work through you for someone else s. If you have questions or are feeling led to participate in some particular way, feel free to contact me: robbie@bethanypresby.org or In my feeble attempt to emulate the late great Dr., think and pray about this: To Whom Will You Go so that You Both Will Grow? Peace- Robbie Ytterberg
2 P A G E 2 A Voice for Ministry written by Lisa Jo Colwell Treasures in the Trash Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (New International Version) Jesus makes all things new. He gives each one of us an opportunity to repurpose our lives by saying, yes to Jesus and inviting Him into our heart. One of my very best friends recently offered a very valuable gift of time and energy spent rifling with me through old boxes that had built up in my basement. Although I was feeling a bit of apprehension when my friend offered this opportunity to me, I chose to agree to do it, and a date and time became solid on my calendar. What about God? He cleans us up and sorts out the treasures within our very being. On the day of the event we sorted, and sorted, and sorted for well over seven hours. It is unbelievable what kind of stuff just stacks up unseen, and unnecessary, just taking up valuable real estate. The biggest reward that we unearthed and I have no idea how it ended up in a box that just looked like trash, was my parent s original marriage certificate and a few photographs from their wedding day. What a delight to find these treasures in the trash! I plan on properly framing and displaying these items which certainly will give me loads of pleasure and will be a wonderful heirloom to pass onto my sons. I refuse for these treasures to get misplaced again. What about God? He digs us up out of a mound of boxed up issues, when we simply invite God into those unfinished places in our personal lives. He cleans us up and sorts out the treasures within our very being. Our part = invite Him in, even when we are somewhat apprehensive. God s part = He cleans us and heals us in our processing. From brokenness, God spots the valuable among the stash of stuffed down emotions. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, He shows us just what it is that is okay to let go of at the foot of the Cross of Jesus Christ.. as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 For the record, my friend who offered me this delightful gift of his time was my oldest son Bruce. It just so happened that the day we found my parent s original marriage certificate and wedding photographs was on their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary. I imagine that they are smiling on us from heaven. This very personal addition to my story just makes it richer and sweeter....you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23: 5, 6 May our Great and merciful God receive ALL of the glory!
