2 AUGUST DATES TO NOTE THIS SUNDAY OUR LADY OF FATIMA Sunday, August 12th - 12:00 noon Mass & parade down lower Lighthouse then back to St. Angela Merici hall for lunch and auction. All are welcome! The Parish Book Club will meet on Monday, August 13th at 7:00pm in the small hall. We meet monthly on the second Monday of each month. Our August selection for discussion will be The Ninth Hour, written by Alice McDermott. Looking ahead, our September book will be Mary Coin: A Novel, written by Marisa Silver. Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary Holy Day of Opportunity The assumption of Mary, body and soul, into heaven, Pope Francis has said, is a sign to all believers that life is not a senseless wandering, but a pilgrimage that, although there are uncertainties and suffering, has a sure goal: the house of the Father, who awaits us with love. Mary s assumption into heaven and, in fact, her entire life show believers the great things that God has in store for them, Pope Francis said. The great things the Almighty has done for her touch us deeply, speak of our journey through life and remind us of the destination that awaits us: the house of the Father, Pope Francis shared last Feast Day of the Assumption.

3 St. Angela Preschool August 15, Wednesday, Back to School Night Pasta with the Pastors - A Fundraiser for I-HELP Thursday, August 30th, 4:30 to 7:00 San Carlos Cathedral Hall, 500 Church Street, Monterey Please join us at this year s Pasta with the Pastors benefit dinner on August 30th. At this event, local pastors will serve you a delicious pasta meal while you assist us in serving the many homeless individuals struggling in our community. The Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP) needs your financial support to successfully continue its mission. I-HELP provides overnight shelter and a warm dinner every night of the year to men and women who are in need. It is comprised of a wonderful network of many local churches and service clubs. Our own St. Angela Merici Parish and the St. Vincent de Paul Society have been leaders in this effort. Tickets are only $20 each, ($10 Children and under 6 no charge). Tickets are available at the door on the night of the dinner. Please let us know ahead of time if you can attend, so we can have plenty of our gourmet pasta for you. Tickets can be purchased by going online to Kathleen Wall, wallplus@aol.com or please RSVP by calling (831) Donations are tax deductible. Delicious spaghetti will be served along with salad, bread, and desert. Come join us for food, fellowship, and support of a much needed service. THANK YOU S ALL AROUND! 5 THE PARISH LIBRARY Over its 30 year presence, the St. Angela Merici Parish Library has grown to become one of our most prized treasures. Today, the multimedia collection numbers almost ten-thousand titles. Our librarians are looking to expand their team! They are looking for anyone who is interested in assisting with managing the books on the shelves, monitoring the due dates, and making sure the library resources are available for anyone who is looking for a good read. Contact Jordan in the parish office (831) to begin helping with this very unique ministry! Youth Faith Formation Begins Soon! St. Angela Merici Parish is home to youth Faith Formation for students of all sorts - not just those who are preparing for First Reconciliation or First Communion. Here are some highlights from last year: Our first graders learned foundational stories from Scripture, and demonstrated their learning by retelling the stories using puppets. They also created a poster each week to help review all of the stories that they learned. Our second graders explored just how blessed we are to have opportunities to know and experience God s infinite mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our third and fourth graders explored what serving the community means by undertaking a recycling project to raise money for parish ministries and other local charities, and by bagging lunches for homeless men whom our parish shelters as part of the I-HELP Program. Five young parishioners celebrated receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time in May of 2018! Each of them said that the weekly faith formation classes helped them deepen their relationship with Jesus and helped them better understand what living a life of faith means: living with love, faith, compassion, and in service of others. Our fifth eighth graders focused on liturgical music and selected an Old Testament Story around which to build a musical scored by selections from Breaking Bread, which they performed to teach the younger students about Noah. This year, nine youth of our parish celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation, and another ten are moving from their first year to their second year of preparation! Our Confirmation Students, alongside students from San Carlos Cathedral and the Carmel Mission Basilica, identified how faith impacts their daily living as high school students, during a retreat which took place at the Franciscan Retreat Center outside of San Juan Bautista. MOST IMPORTANTLY, ALL OF THE STUDENTS SAY THEY ENJOYED FAITH FORMATION CLASSES BECAUSE THEY FELT PART OF A COMMUNITY OF PEERS GROWING TOGETHER IN FAITH. Did you know that the Gospel of John plays an incredibly important role in every Liturgical year? Up to 18 major liturgies each year involve passages from the Gospel of John. We proclaim John s Gospel primarily during the most important liturgical season: Easter. John s Gospel, for some, is the most challenging. Mark your calendars, because the parish will be presenting a learning series to help deepen your understanding of and relationship to the Gospel of John. Over the eight weeks, our learning community will gather in the parish hall to pray, read, reflect, and grow in our relationship to the person of Jesus who is presented in the Gospel of John. We will begin at 7pm Tuesday, September 25th, and meet each Tuesday evening until November 7th.
