2 HOUSING REHABILITATION PROGRAM Are you a low income homeowner? Do you own a home in Pacific Grove that needs repairs? The City of Pacific Grove has funds through grants made available by the State of California to help low income homeowners repair or replace: insulation, windows, doors, painting, plumbing, electrical systems, kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, drainage or foundation problems, roofing, weather stripping and accessibility related improvements. One way to develop our understanding of Scripture is to use the method of inductive reasoning common in science. With an open mind, we propose and develop hypotheses and theories to discern the meaning and intent of the authors of Scripture in their historical context. This complements, but does not replace, the more spiritual aspects of Scripture: its place in our Tradition, its meaning in our lives. Dennis holds a BA in Scripture Study from Seattle University and an MA from Catholic University Leuven, Belgium. He has been teaching and leading retreats on Scripture Study for more than 25 years. Pasta with the Pastors - A Fundraiser for I-HELP Thursday, August 30th, 4:30 to 7:00 San Carlos Cathedral Hall, 500 Church Street, Monterey Please join us at this year s Pasta with the Pastors benefit dinner on August 30th. At this event, local pastors will serve you a delicious pasta meal while you assist us in serving the many homeless individuals struggling in our community. The Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP) needs your financial support to successfully continue its mission. I-HELP provides overnight shelter and a warm dinner every night of the year to men and women who are in need. It is comprised of a wonderful network of many local churches and service clubs. Our own St. Angela Merici Parish and the St. Vincent de Paul Society have been leaders in this effort. Tickets are only $20 each, ($10 Children and under 6 no charge). Tickets are available at the door on the night of the dinner. Please let us know ahead of time if you can attend, so we can have plenty of our gourmet pasta for you. Tickets can be purchased by going online to Kathleen Wall, wallplus@aol.com or please RSVP by calling (831) Donations are tax deductible. Delicious spaghetti will be served along with salad, bread, and desert. Come join us for food, fellowship, and support of a much needed service.

3 Youth Faith Formation Begins Soon! St. Angela Merici Parish is home to youth faith formation for students of all sorts - not just those who are preparing for First Reconciliation or First Communion. All of the students last year said they had fun learning about their Catholic Faith, and enjoyed faith formation classes because they felt part of a community of peers growing together in faith. Classes start September 25th, so pick up registration paperwork in the Parish Office! Consider becoming a library volunteer! St. Angela Merici library has become one of our parishes most prized treasures! Our wonderful librarians are looking to expand their team, and would love to have some volunteers who are interested in helping to manage the books on the shelves, monitor the due dates, and make sure the library resources are available to anyone who is looking for a good read. Please consider volunteering! Up to 18 major liturgies each year involve passages from the Gospel of John. We proclaim John s Gospel primarily during the most important liturgical season: Easter. John s Gospel, for some, is the most challenging. Mark your calendars, because the parish will be presenting a learning series to help deepen your understanding of and relationship to the Gospel of John. Over the eight weeks, our learning community will gather in the parish hall to pray, read, reflect, and grow in our relationship to the person of Jesus who is presented in the Gospel of John. We will begin at 7pm Tuesday, September 25th, and meet each Tuesday evening until November 7th. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises. (Sing to the Lord; Music in Divine Worship) CHOIR Summer is the perfect time to sing with the 10:00 am choir. Why? Because your only obligation is to arrive at 9:27 am on Sunday! So, if you ever thought about what it would be like to sing in the choir, here is your chance. It s free and the return you will get will be amazing. TRY IT! CANTORS Singers with faith, good voice, and pleasant demeanor always welcome to consider leading the assembly in song. Training is provided. Earlier this month a group of parishioners toured the E. Charlton Fortune exhibit at the Monterey Museum of Art and then had lunch together at a local Restaurant. Our next event will be in October. Charlton Fortune tour Sixteen members of St. Angela s enjoyed a docent led tour of the E. Charlton Fortune exhibit at the Monterey Museum of Art on Monday, August 6th. E. Charlton Fortune began as plein air artist. Her impressionist landscapes won International acclaim. In her forties she began a new vocation as a liturgical artist. Many of her landscapes and liturgical works are on display. The experience gave us a greater appreciation of the artist s liturgical works of art here at St. Angela s. The museum offers docent led tours on request during the week or at 1:00 pm on the weekend. The exhibit closes on August 27th. The Knights of Columbus (K of C) is the world s largest Catholic fraternal service organization with almost two million Catholic men in several countries. Described by Saint Pope John Paul II as a strong right arm of the Catholic Church, member knights strive to live by the tenants of the order: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Formed in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882 by the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney, the order s yearly Charitable donations have grown over the years to now exceed 185 million dollars and yearly volunteer service hours are over 75 million. Originally chartered in 1962 as the Fr. Charles T. Kerfs Council, the local K of C council was reactivated in December of 2015 and renamed the St. Angela Merici Council while retaining the council number To be of better service to this parish, the council must not only grow its membership numbers to a normal operational level, it must continue to recruit new members for it to undertake further projects that will benefit the parish, faith and community as well as programs at the national and international levels. The order also provides its members with a top-rated insurance program. Available only to members, the program includes life insurance, retirement annuities, long-term care insurance, and disability income insurance. Participation is entirely voluntary..
