REFORMATION SUNDAY ~ CONFIRMATION HOLY COMMUNION ~ ELW SETTING 3 8:00 A.M. ~ Sunday, October 27 ~ 10:30 A.M. WITH JOY IN OUR HEARTS all are welcome to this celebration of Christ s victory over sin and death as we approach God s throne of grace where mercy and life is given to all. Today, Reformation Sunday, offers an opportunity for all Christians to affirm the faith of our baptism in Christ. Therefore with gratitude, we recall the saints who led the Church in reformation. It is a reformation that continues with the spiritual freedom we have been given by God s grace through faith in Christ. In this gathering we proclaim all who believe in Christ s real presence are prepared to receive and join in the Holy Communion. Children who have not been instructed to receive the elements are invited to come forward to receive a personal blessing. WORSHIP AIDS A NURSERY is located upstairs by the balcony. Though the nursery is not staffed, it is available for your use. ACTIVITY BAGS for young children are on a stand at the rear of church; please return after services. Thanks. A PREFERENCE to receiving grape juice is indicated by raising your index finger to the server. I WISH CARDS are in your pews; please let us know your ideas to improve our Trinity home. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS ARE AVAILABLE. Please ask the usher for a copy. GATHERING WE PREPARE: Eight young people come before us today to affirm the faith of their Baptism in Christ and receive Confirmation from the church. As Parents, sponsors, relatives, mentors, guides, teachers and friends, we surround them with our love and prayers as we continue to offer them our encouragement and support today and in the days to come. RINGING OF THE BELL / PARISH NOTICES JOSIE SCHIEFFERT THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. ALL: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. 2

ALL: We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. GATHERING SONG Amazing Grace ELW # 779 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 3

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. INSCRIPTION OF HOPE WORD Hannah Johnson & Molly Dunn FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:31-34 OT page 694 The first reading is in Jeremiah chapter 31, verses It is found in the Old Testament beginning on page 694 of your bibles. The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to live upright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets. And now the Reading The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. PSALM 46 The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea; Though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be shaken; God shall help it at the break of day. The nations rage, and the kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth melts away. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 5

Come now, regard the works of the LORD, what desolations God has brought upon the earth; Behold the one who makes war to cease in all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. "Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. SECOND READING Romans 3:19-28 NT page 134 The second reading is in Romans chapter 3, verses It is found in the New Testament beginning on page 134 of your bibles. Paul's words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and the other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ's death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ. And now the Reading Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For "no human being will be justified in his sight" by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. The Word of the Lord GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Thanks be to God. GOSPEL John 8:31-36 NT page 88 The gospel is found in John chapter 8, verses It is found in the New Testament beginning on page 88 of your bibles. 6

Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin. And now The Holy Gospel according to St. John the 8 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 8 AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM P: These persons have been instructed in the Christian faith and desire to make public affirmation of their Baptism: Benjamin James Bleick, Hannah Lynn Johnson, Austin Mark Fischer, Sydney Bernice Holland, Kyle Lee Kjelshus, Dylan James Klein, Lauren Elizabeth Laffen, and Josie Lynn Schieffert. (Confirmands come forward.) P: Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you for Benjamin, Hannah, Austin, Sydney, Kyle, Dylan, Lauren and Josie, whom you have made your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in this community of faith. Uphold them in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. C: Amen. P: Dear friends, we rejoice that you now desire to make public profession of your faith and assume greater responsibility in the life of our Christian community and its mission in the world. In Holy Baptism our Lord Jesus Christ received you and made you members of his Church. Therefore, I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Confirmands: I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Confirmands: I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Confirmands: I renounce them. (Congregation stands to affirm our faith with the Confirmands) Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen THE PRAYERS are said. Let us pray for those who are affirming their Baptism, and for all the baptized everywhere: 8

That they may be redeemed from all evil and rescued from the way of sin and death: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. That the Holy Spirit may open their hearts to your grace and truth: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. That they may be kept in the faith and communion of your holy Church: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. That they may be sent into the world in witness to your love: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. That they may be brought to the fullness of your peace and glory: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. (other petitions are offered) Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (C: Sit as the minister addresses the Confirmands.) You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear his Word and share in his supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Confirmands: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. (Confirmands kneel) Let us pray. Gracious Lord, through water and the Spirit you have made these young men and women your own. You forgave them all their sins and brought them to newness of life. Continue to strengthen them with the Holy Spirit, and daily increase in them your gifts of grace: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen (Parents, Baptismal Sponsors and/or Mentors come forward. They join the pastor in the laying on of hands.) Father in heaven, for Jesus sake, stir up in (name) the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm (his/her) faith, guide (his/her) life, empower (him/her) in (his/her) serving, give (him/her) patience in suffering, and bring (him/her) to everlasting life. Amen. PRESENTATION Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of our baptism in Christ. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. 9

OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray, O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. And also with you. We lift them to the Lord. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: WORDS OF JESUS THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. COMMUNION (Please sign the Welcome Pads and pass to your neighbor.
