CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY SERVICE OF THE WORD ~ ALTERNATIVE WORSHIP 9:00 A.M. Sunday, November 22 nd We gather in the Name of the Lord who calls us to worship God s Name above every name. Your presence today blesses this gathering, as together, we honor the Lord with our thanks and praises. For those able, fellowship and refreshments await you in the library immediately following our Sunday morning worship. The Education Hour begins at 10:00. WORSHIP AIDS A NURSERY is located upstairs by the balcony. Though the nursery is not staffed it is available for your use. PLEASE SIGN the Friendship Pad as it is passed to you during today s offering. ACTIVITY BAGS for young children are on a stand at the rear of church; please return after services. Thanks. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS ARE AVAILABE to you by requesting one from the ushers. GATHERING WE PREPARE Today we conclude our Fall Stewardship Program: Rediscover Macedonia: A Spirit of Gratitude & Generosity with two stories about poor widows. One gave the last of her food to Elijah and the other, her very last coins to the temple treasury. How do we identify with such giving? Do we give only out of desperation? Do we give only what is easy? Or do we give from gratitude and generosity that celebrates the joy of God s blessings given through our time, our talents and our possessions? RINGING THE BELL /PARISH NOTICES CALL TO WORSHIP Worship Team CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, clothed in majesty ever since the world began, who loves us and frees us from our sins, who leads us with all the saints to everlasting life. Amen. Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God. Silence is kept for reflection. God our maker and redeemer, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We come for refuge to your infinite mercy. You have given your only Son to die for us; have mercy on us, and for his sake, forgive us all our sin. By your Holy Spirit, increase in us true knowledge of you and your will, and true obedience to your word, that by your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God has had mercy on us, and God s only Son has been given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sin. Believing in Jesus name, you have received power to become the children of God; you have received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

GATHERING SONG Come Thou Almighty King GREETING From the one who is and who was and who is to come, and from Jesus Christ, the first fruits of the resurrection, grace and peace be with you all. And also with you. PSALM 146 Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, O my soul! I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;

who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD! PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and ever-living God, you anointed your beloved Son to be priest and sovereign forever. Grant that all the people of the earth, now divided by the power of sin, may be united and guided to be good stewards by the glorious and gentle rule of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. EXPRESSIONS OF STEWARDSHIP WORD Board of Social Ministries FIRST READING 1 Kings 17:8-16 The first reading is in 1 Kings chapter 17, verses This chapter begins the story of Elijah. God sends a drought on Israel because of the sins of King Ahab. This passage depicts God s saving acts not only on behalf of Elijah, but also on behalf of those who are associated with the prophet, even a foreigner, the widow of Zarephath. And now the Reading: Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, "Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you." So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." But she said, "As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth." She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah. The Word of the Lord SECOND READING Thanks be to God Revelation 1:4b-8 The second reading is in Revelation chapter 1, verses 4b-8. The book of Revelation begins by celebrating the Almighty God, who spans all of time. Similarly, Jesus is celebrated as the firstborn from the dead who rules over the world s rulers. He is the one whose return we eagerly await. And now the Reading:

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God GOSPEL ACCLAMATION He is exalted, the King is exalted on high, I will praise Him. He is exalted, forever exalted, and I will praise His name. He is the Lord, forever His truth shall reign. Heaven and earth rejoice in His holy name. He is exalted, the King is exalted on high. He is Exalted GOSPEL READING Mark 12:38-44 The Gospel is found in Mark chapter 12, verses After engaging in a series of public arguments with religious leaders in the temple, Jesus contrasts the proud and oppressive ways of those leaders with the sacrificial humility and poverty of the widow. The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 12 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. As Jesus taught, he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. NOISY OFFERING (Weekend Food Program) AND PLEDGE CARD COLLECTION PRAYER OF DEDICATION MESSAGE Commitment Comes From the Heart Pastor Keith Ainsley

SONG OF THE DAY Soon and Very Soon CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Your Social Ministries Board, with your help with food and money, has begun the "Milk Fairy" and Weekend Food program at Sleepy Eye Elementary School. We are so thankful to you, the members of Trinity, for your support with these two projects. We would like you to prayerfully consider "adopting" a child for a portion of the school year. The cost per child for a weekend of food is approximately $4 a week. The cost of milk per week is $2.25 per child. If this is what God is calling you to do, please designate your gifts above and beyond your usual church giving to these projects. We are called to do God's Work with our hands. Thank you for all you are doing. Thanks-giving Tree With the change in the weather comes the need for gloves, mittens and hats to help keep warm when out of doors. During the month of November the Social Ministry Board will be collecting these items for boys and girls ages After Thanksgiving they will be given to the Sleepy Eye and Springfield elementary school teachers to distribute as needed. We want all kids to be nice and warm while playing outside at school. Look for the autumn tree with baskets beneath and add your donation to the display. Thanks for joining in this effort!
