HOLY COMMUNION ~ SETTING 3 8:00 & 10:30 A.M. ~ SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2013 ALL ARE WELCOME AS WE GATHER ON THIS FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT to begin a new Church Year! Once again, we turn to the annual Advent Wreath to light the first candle that is called The Prophecy Candle. It symbolizes the time of watching and waiting for the birth of Christ and his coming again. Advent is a time for us to turn our hearts to God s most precious gift of Jesus Christ. May these days of preparation for you be filled with peaceful anticipation of our Lord s coming! We pray our worship together will bring a special blessing to you and all who are gathered here as Christ invites you to His table to receive the presence of His body and blood through the bread and cup. May God s grace empower you to leave here in service to others. WORSHIP AIDS LARGE PRINT BULLETINS are available from an usher. A NURSERY is located upstairs by the balcony. GATHERING WE PREPARE: The new church year begins with a wake-up call: Christ is coming soon! In today's readings both Paul and Jesus challenge us to wake from sleep, for we know neither the day nor hour of the Lord's coming. Isaiah proclaims the day when God will gather all people on the holy mountain and there will be no more war or suffering. Though we vigilantly watch for the promised day of salvation, we wait for what we already have: Christ comes among us this day as the word and meal that strengthens our faith in the promises of God. PRELUDE/BELL E en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come SENIOR CHOIR PARISH NOTICES RINGING IN THE NEW CHURCH YEAR In the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber. Because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; The day is almost here. So put aside the deeds of darkness; And put on the armor of light. 2
Let us confess our sins before the Lord and ask for God s forgiveness: --brief silence Lord, we confess that sometimes we behave like slaves rather than as heirs of your glorious kingdom. We have forgotten how much you love us and have placed great distance between us in our relationship with you and one another. Lord, we desire to start over, to be reunited, and to begin again. We need your love and we want to live in harmony with you. Forgive us, heal us, and make us inheritors of your astonishing grace. Amen. Hear the glad tidings of God! The Word was made flesh and lived among us. Clothed in our humanity, Jesus Christ is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters and claims us as beloved children of God through our baptism in Christ. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven and restored to wholeness; in Him we are free to serve God and our neighbor without fear. Amen. GATHERING SONG My Lord, What a Morning ELW #438 3
GREETING Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE 4
PRAYER OF THE DAY Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merciful protection save us from the threatening dangers of our sins, and enlighten our walk in the way of your salvation, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. LIGHTING THE PROPHECY CANDLE AND BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH A reading from Isaiah, chapter 2, verses 2 and 4 In days to come they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. God s people have longed for the day when true and lasting peace will come This week we remember the bright glory that spilled onto Bethlehem s hillsides and the more radiant dawn that shone on Easter that was sparked to life ages ago by those who were given a vision of God s bright future and fanned it into a flame of faith and expectation. Matthew chapter 1, verse22 says And this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet (The first candle is lit) Let us pray: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. You call all nations to walk in your light and to seek your ways of justice and peace, for the night is past, and the dawn of your coming is near. Bless us as we light the first candle of the wreath. Rouse us from sleep, that we may be ready to greet our Lord when he comes and welcome him into our hearts and homes, for he is our light and our salvation. Blessed be God forever. Amen. SONG O Come, O Come, Emmanuel ELW #257 O come, O come, Em-man-u-el, and ransome captive Is-ra-el, That mourns in lone-ly ex-ile here until the Son of God ap-pear. Re-joice! Re-joice! Em-man-u-el shall come to you, O Is-ra-el. 5
WORD FIRST READING Isaiah 2:1-5 NT page 591 The first reading is in Isaiah chapter 2, verses 1-5. It is found in the Old Testament on page 591 of your bibles. The visionary message presented in this reading focuses on a future day when God establishes a universal reign of peace. Divine decisions will make war obsolete, and the worshiping community responds: "Let us walk in that light of that Lord now!" And now the Reading The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD! The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Romans 13:11-14 NT page 142 The second reading is in Romans chapter 13, verses It is found in the New Testament on page 142 of your bibles. Paul compares the advent of Christ to the coming of dawn. We live our lives today in light of Christ's coming in the future. And now the Reading Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. The Word of the Lord GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Thanks be to God. 6
GOSPEL Matthew 24:36-44 NT page 24 The gospel is found in Matthew chapter 24, verses It is found in the New Testament on page 24 of your bibles. Jesus describes his second coming as a sudden, unexpected event that will bring salvation or judgment upon people caught up in the usual affairs of daily life. He urges people to be alert and expectant. And now The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 24 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Rev. Richard Anderson, Lutheran Social Services SONG OF THE DAY Each Winter as the Year Grows Older ELW #252 7
CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. MEAL And also with you. PRESENTATION OF BREAD & WINE Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful ELW #182 (Bread & Wine is brought forward by the communion assistants) Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and the dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. OFFERING PRAYER Good and loving God, we rejoice in the birth of Jesus, who came among the poor to bring the riches of your grace. As you have blessed us with your gifts, let them be blessing for others. With the trees of the field, with all earth and heaven, we shout for joy at the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You comforted your people with the promise of the Redeemer, through whom you will also make all things new in the day when he comes to judge the world in righteousness. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 8
THE WORDS OF JESUS LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. DISTRIBUTION Come to the table where Christ comes to make a home in you.
