EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST LECTION 15 ELW SERVICE OF THE WORD JULY 10 TH AT 9:00 AM ~ JULY 11 TH AT 7:00 PM YOU ARE WELCOMED IN THIS HOUSE OF THE LORD! All who come and gather in this place to worship the crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ are embraced by Jesus and this community of faith. May your service in Christ fill you with new possibilities for loving and serving your neighbor. Immediately following the Sunday morning worship everyone is invited to join in the fellowship and refreshments in the Library. GATHERING WE PREPARE: To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind is to reflect God s mercy in responding to one s neighbor. That mercy found its most profound expression in the gospel that has come to you namely the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That gospel mercy comes to us again today: at the font, at the altar, and from the pulpit. It is very near to you. PARISH NOTICES /RINGING OF THE BELL CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. The apostle Paul assures us: When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross. Jesus says to you, Your sins are forgiven. Be at peace, and tell everyone how much God has done for you. Amen. 2

GATHERING HYMN Let Justice Flow Like Streams ELW 717 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Show me your ways, O LORD, and teach me your paths. To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. Let none who look to you be put to shame; rather let those be put to shame who are treacherous. Show me your ways, O LORD, and teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD. You are gracious and upright, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners in your way. You lead the lowly in justice and teach the lowly your way. All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness to those who keep your covenant and your testimonies. RESPONSIVE PSALM 25:1-10 PRAYER OF THE DAY O Lord God, your mercy delights us, and the world longs for your loving care. Hear the cries of everyone in need, and turn our hearts to love our neighbors with the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 3

WORD FIRST READING Deuteronomy 30:9-14 The first reading is in Deuteronomy chapter 30, verses Moses calls the people who are about to enter the promised land to renew the covenant God made with their ancestors. Through this covenant God gives life and asks for obedience. God's commandment is neither burdensome nor too far off, but dwells in the people's own hearts. And now the Reading: And the LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the LORD your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, "Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?" Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, "Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?" No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. SECOND READING 1 John 4:7-5:4 The second reading is in 1 John, chapter 4, verse 7 through chapter 5, verse 4. We love God and others because God first loved us. We cannot say we love God, whom we have not seen, while hating fellow Christians, whom we regularly see. Love toward God is to be matched by love toward others because the essence of God is love. And now the Reading: Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, 4

whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL Luke 10:1-11, The gospel is found in Luke chapter 10, verses Jesus is challenged to explain what is involved in obeying the greatest commandment. Jesus tells a parable rich in surprises: those expected to show pity display hard hearts while the lowly give and receive unexpected and lavish mercy. And now The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 10 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. NOISY OFFERING TO BENEFIT JOE FRY MISSIONS SERMON First Love Intern Adam Connolly 5

HYMN OF THE DAY Oh God of Mercy, God of Light ELW 714 CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH PEACE The Peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. 6

July 10, 2016~ Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Love your neighbor as yourself. DAILY BIBLE READINGS Sunday Luke 10:25-37 The Good Samaritan Monday Deuteronomy 30:9-14 The Word is near Tuesday Psalm 25:1-10 Teach me God s truth Wednesday James 2:14-26 Faith produces good works Thursday Mark 12:28-34 Two great commandments Friday Romans 13:8-10 Love fulfills the law Saturday Isaiah 58:6-11 Help those who need help Sunday Luke 10:38-42 Only one thing needed SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK The man replied, The Scriptures say, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind. They also say, Love your neighbors as much as you love yourself. Luke 10:27 SAY, PRAY AND BLESS: A Prayer for the Week: God our Savior, guide us in your truth, and teach us. We trust in you all day long. Amen. (Psalm 25:5) Mealtime Prayer: God so good, your praises we shout! Give us love for those without. Amen. A Blessing to Give: May the God of steadfast love and faithfulness guide us to see the needs of others and be a loving neighbor to all. Amen. CARING CONVERSATION Discuss in your home or small group: Share about a time when someone was kind to you. In Jesus parable, the Good Samaritan went out of his way to help the man who had been robbed. What would you have done if you saw the hurt man on the road? What does it say about Jesus message that he chose a Samaritan, some-one who was despised by the Jews, to be the hero of the story? Jesus describes a neighbor through a story about someone in need. If you were in need, whom would you accept as your neighbor? DEVOTIONS Speaking through Moses, God told the people of Israel that the Word was in their mouths and in their hearts so that they would obey it (Deuteronomy 30:14). In your home devotion times this week, try to memorize (i.e., place in your mouths and hearts) what Jesus called the two greatest commandments: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. (Luke 10:27) SERVICE In contemporary society there is a fear of strangers. In the Good Samaritan story, the stranger becomes the neighbor. Do an act of kindness for someone you don t know personally. It could be someone at school or at work or on the street. Afterward, talk about your experience with family or friends. What was it like to help someone you do not know well or personally? RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Sometimes religious traditions can get in the way of love. The priest and the Levite avoided the hurt man because of a fear of becoming unclean and unable to enter the temple in Jerusalem. The heart of Christian rituals and traditions is to love God and people. This week recite Luke 10:27 each day when you rise and when you go to bed Milestones Ministry, LLC. All rights reserved.
