2 Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese Compiled by Nicola Mellors Trusting Thomas MARCH Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it. Optimists tend to be glass half full people Thomas was definitely glass half empty. He was a typical melancholic, whose nature was to see the dark side of everything. By nature he was argumentative, demanding a reason for everything. He was not at all interested in second hand evidence, he could never be rushed into a decision. Did Thomas touch those sacred scars? Did he, in the presence of Jesus, demand further evidence? Then the true Thomas asserted himself. Flinging his doubts to the wind, he cast himself at the nail-pierced feet in abject surrender. His unbelief vanished like the morning mist. He took the leap of doubt into faith in the rapturous confession. My Lord and my God! One sight of the risen Saviour was enough to deliver Thomas from his unbelief. The dismal doubter became the Confessor. Thomas was the first to call Jesus God: the doubter came to an absolute assurance of faith. We tend to magnify his doubt, but what of his faith? His confession is expressed in the language of passionate love. Thomas bowed before His Lord in awe and worship. Once certain of the truth of the Resurrection, his life and witness were transformed. The greatest day in history. Death is beaten, you have rescued me. Sing it out. Jesus is alive. Tim Hughes If you speak to Christians from India, they will tell you that there is a strong tradition that Thomas took the Gospel to Persia, China and India. It is healthy to question, challenge, examine, think. What happened to Thomas was not a brain by-pass operation, but he brought his questions to Jesus until they were answered. He would always have been a thinking Christian, but not on the sidelines. He wholeheartedly served the cause of the Gospel. 3 2 March 16 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Time to pray for solutions to homelessness Church communities across Nottinghamshire continue to play a leading role in advocacy and support for homeless and vulnerable people: we are therefore delighted that Bishop Paul has chosen to maintain the tradition that the Diocesan Bishop is Framework s Patron ex officio. Framework celebrates its strong relationship with churches and other faith communities, not least at its annual service in Southwell Minster. We invite people to join us there again on Saturday 9th April in this our 15th anniversary year. There could be no better moment to meet. Central and local government policy continues to pose existential threats to much of our work and that of similar organisations. For instance at the end of March our Nottinghamshire Homelessness Prevention Service will cease leaving more than 2,500 people across the county without the help they need to stay in their homes. In 2013 churches and their congregations were in the vanguard of our successful campaign to keep these services open; now, while their effectiveness is not questioned, further budget cuts have forced their closure. The results, we fear, are all too predictable a rise in homelessness and especially in the number of people who are sleeping rough. Andrew Redfern, Chief Executive, Framework Speakers at the service in Southwell Minster on Saturday 9th April at 11am will include Andrew Redfern and Framework service users. Refreshments will be served after the service. Transforming pain into hope: an exhibition of visual prayer for Lent Praying for the healing of our world is the theme of a touring contemplative collection for Lent currently being exhibited in the Chapter House at Southwell Minster. Words of Forgiveness and Hope is a series of paintings by Iain McKillop, an Anglican Priest, painter and art historian. The images are a form of visual prayer, contemplating the themes of hope and salvation. He says: We feel for those in pain or struggling in life, particularly the plight of so many innocents who suffer as a result of war and terrorism. Continued on page 11

4 Niftynotes 3 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Bishop appoints Advisor to focus on strategy for growing disciples Bishop Paul Williams has appointed a Strategic Development Advisor as part of his commitment to focus on growing disciples across the diocese. Canon Richard Kellett will take on the role three days a week for 18 months, starting on 1 April. Working closely with the Bishop and Senior Staff he will support the development and implementation of key elements of the emerging strategy, liaising closely with Area Deans, clergy and lay leaders. Richard will remain Vicar of Skegby and Teversal, with the Revd Kate Byrom, curate in her third year, accepting an invitation from the Bishop to continue her ministry in the parish for an extended period of two years as Associate Vicar. Richard will also remain as Area Dean of Newstead, though an Assistant Dean will be appointed. At Diocesan Synod in October, Bishop Paul spoke of his commitment to prioritize Growing Disciples wider, younger and deeper. He said: I am delighted that Richard has accepted my invitation to fill this strategic role at an exciting time in the life of the diocese. Over the past few months it has been immensely encouraging to hear the stories of people who have come to faith in Christ from every background and walk of life across the county God is wonderfully at work transforming lives and shaping communities. But we are praying for more and planning for growth, so that together we can make a bigger difference in our city, towns and villages, blessing all the people we are called to love and serve in Jesus name. Richard brings considerable experience, energy and expertise to helping us implement the emerging strands of priority around growing disciples. Having served in the diocese for 20 years, Richard understands the breadth of opportunities before us as well as knowing the diverse contexts in which we are seeking to grow the church. Bishop Paul Williams: Praying the Lord s Prayer during Lent Bishop Paul Williams has recorded a video message in which he encourages people to pray the Lord s Prayer daily as part of their devotions during Lent. In the video, the Bishop says: For many Christians Lent is a time to give something up as a mark of devotion to Christ and to say no to yourself in some area of life but it can also be a time to take something on, to create a new habit that might make a difference way beyond the end of Lent. If you re not sure what that might be, why not pray the Lord s Prayer as an every day prayer through Lent. See the video at ishop-paul-williams-prayinglords-prayer-lent/

9 8 March 16 World links news - Natal Compiled for Nifty Notes A new way in a new time The Revd Barbara Holbrook, Natal Link Officer writes: There have been changes in both our Dioceses over the last year, with new Bishops arriving. This heralds a new phase of our Link. Both Bishops have known Links in their previous Diocese, and are encouraging us in our friendships. Bishop Dino has met with friends of the Link in Natal, and Revd Dane Elsworth has been appointed as Link Officer. Dane was their first Link Officer back in 2003, and spent three months over here in Southwell and Nottingham then. He has also hosted visitors from here, and is justifiably remembered for his ability to organise a good Braai Link Officer: Dane Elsworth (barbeque). Dane has several good friendships over here, and we look forward to working together. Visiting each other continues to be part of our growing friendship. Bishop Paul and Bishop Dino are hoping to meet on such a visit later in the year. Visits to family and friends have strengthened our links between parishes and individuals. After a time of waiting, we are now beginning to see a new way in a new time. We have learnt much over the years about what is important in our friendships, and how our preconceptions are challenged. We look forward to building on these firm foundations, as individuals, parishes and Link groups and what our shared journey brings to the wider Church. Please pray for everyone who has been impacted by the Link, that lives will continue to be enriched. Pray for our bishops as they learn more about the linked Dioceses. Further details: , sacrista_prebend@btinternet.com Continued from page 2 The work was influenced by a visit to Würzburg, re-built after devastating bombing in 1945, and the paintings draw inspiration from the art of the city. We are invited to stop a while, to use each picture to focus on the needs of others and ourselves, to contemplate and to pray for peace, justice and the healing of our world. The Seven Last Words from the Cross show Jesus identifying with the pain of so many on the earth, forgiving those who persecute, giving us to each other for mutual support, dying to cleanse broken people & restore human peace with God. They are not so much meditations on pain, as on God s willingness to pour out all for our healing. The Seven Songs of Resurrection contemplate Christ s returning to life with promises of hope and restoration. He calls us to new ways of living, and assures us that he remains with us. God gives his Spirit to strengthen and support us in sending us out to spread his message. With his peace and his love we are to build a better world. The exhibition runs until Tues 22nd March and is free to visit. Further details: tp://mckillop.weebly.com/ Please note the deadline for the April 2016 issue of Nifty Notes is: 12TH MARCH 2016
