Paul the Apostle Editor Councilman Billy Cowherd Public Works Folks, we again find ourselves on the other side of another Pennsylvania winter. With Spring here your Public Works Department has already begun several road and storm water improvement projects. To date, approximately 15 tons of cold patch has been used to fill potholes throughout the Borough; asphalt patching will begin as soon as the plant opens. To report a pothole, please call the Borough Office. The Borough will be running our Third Annual Second Chance Leaf Pick Up. For the week of April the residents are welcome to rake any left overs leaves to the curb, exactly as you would for our Fall leaf pick up. This program will be for the week of the 22nd ONLY. Brush pick up will be offered again this year. To schedule a pick up, call with your address and location of the brush (front or back of the house). Please make sure that all brush is chippable; vines and root balls will not be accepted, and the Borough does not pick up yard waste such as decorative grasses, yard clippings, etc. Also, please keep in mind that brush will be picked up at the convenience of the Department of Public Works; residents are also more than welcome to bring their brush to us at our maintenance building. As always, please remember to keep shrubs and trees cut back from roadways, alleys and sidewalks. The Borough s Earth Day Clean Up will take place on Saturday, April the 27th. We welcome volunteers to gather at 8 am on Saturday. Please wear proper work clothes: closed toed shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts. Gloves and safety vests will be provided, as will refreshments after we finish up around 11 am. Through the generous donation of time given by these volunteers we can give a nice spring cleaning to many areas in the Borough. 3 Youngwood Revitalization and Development (YARD) We have 20 new pavers being engraved to be installed in our second phase of the patio surrounding the commemorative clock. This will complete YARD s parklet project Thank you all for your support and cooperation, it s been a pleasure working with all of you. The new pavers will be installed in the spring and we will be notifying the community when they are being installed. Our next event scheduled at this time is the 18th Annual Community YARD Sale which will be held on Saturday, June 8, This is not a fund-raising event for YARD, as it is a fund-raising event for our churches, organizations, and residents. We offer advertising on the flyer/map that is distributed a week before the sale. Cost is $10 for an ad, this helps pay for the cost of the flyers, and the radio and print promotions of the YARD SALE throughout the area. This sale is known to be the best in the area. For an ad, PKling5504@aol.com for an application or pick up an application at the borough office. Deadline for information is May 15, Hope you put lots of jingle in your pockets this year. Our only fund raiser scheduled at this time is our 2 nd Annual Holiday Crafts and Vendor Show to be held on Sunday, November 17, 2019 from 10am to 3pm, at Youngwood Fire Hall. If interested in an application, PKling5504@aol.com or on Facebook It s So Youngwood YARD at this time we still have a limited number of cookbook available for purchase at Hayden s Pharmacy, Hepler Hardware, and Youngwood borough office. These would make great gifts for Easter and Mothers Day coming up soon. We ordered 500 books and sold 470 to date. We will not be reordering any more cookbooks. 5 Youngwood Area Business Association Welcome Spring!! The Youngwood Area Business Association will be hosting our annual Jeffrey Lance Wentzel memorial 5k Run/Walk on Sunday May 19 at 9:00 am at the Youngwood Fire Hall You can register on line at youngwoodareabusiness.com. The registration fee is $20.00 until May 5. After May 5 it will be $ This event is for such a great cause. All proceeds go into a scholarship fund in Lances name to WCCC to help a student embarking in a career in a public service field. There will also be a kid race before the main event. Remember to shop patronize your local businesses. Youngwood Lions Club YOUNGWOOD LIONS CLUB We would like to THANK all who attended our Pancake and Sausage Breakfast on March 9th. It was our most successful breakfast! Perhaps everyone wanted to celebrate the beginning of the break in inclement weather??? Or perhaps it was because everyone enjoys the food and visiting with neighbors. Our next breakfast will be in October. We would like to invite the community to our annual Strawberry Festival also held at Christ United Methodist Church on June 14th from 4PM until 7PM. Sandwiches, beverages, cakes, and of course, fresh local strawberries over vanilla ice cream will be served. All proceeds are given to the Youngwood Library. Watch for our signs!!! As always, we have brooms for sale at Hayden s. They are your # one tool for Spring cleaning. We are always receptive to adding new members to this group that follows our motto: WE SERVE. 6 Wildlife Works Wildlife Works, Inc is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization serving Westmoreland County and surrounding areas, dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of distressed wildlife and the promotion of responsible attitudes about the preservation of native species, habitat, and the environment. WWI rehabilitates injured, ill and orphaned mammals, songbirds, and birds of prey who have been victims of human interference, environmental contamination, or habitat destruction. Because people and their activities are often responsible, directly or indirectly, we believe we are obligated to help these wildlings. WWI is not federally funded and exists entirely on donations. Dedicated volunteers donate hundreds of hours assisting in the care of animals, fundraising, and helping with emergencies. If you are interested in helping, please contact us! or Hempfield Garden Club The Hempfield Garden Club meets monthly at Christ United Methodist Church. If you are interested in the Club, please see a current member, or call for more information. Club members will be busy in May planting annuals in 2 large beds at the Youngwood Cemetery, and at Park & Pool, and at the Post Office. The Garden Club will participate in the Community Yard Sale again this June, and will have many beautiful plants for sale, as well as yummy baked goods! GARDEN TIPS: APRIL is the perfect month to get outside and clean out and prepare your planting beds for sowing new flowers and vegetables. MAY is the perfect month to continue to prepare beds and to plant. Annuals should be planted toward the end of the month when the chance of frost is passed. JUNE is the month to enjoy what you have sown. One important tip to remember is to water your new plants if it doesn t rain every few days. Happy Gardening! 7 Youngwood Park N Pool OPENING DAY NEWS The Youngwood Park N Pool will have opening day on Saturday June 1st Gate will open at 11:00am The hours for the 2019 Season will be: 11:00am-7:00pm 7 days a week (closing for rain/weather only) During the summer months, the MOONLIGHT SWIMS are back and happening every Wednesday night from 7pm-9/10pm for only $3 admission. Entertainment those nights will be Battle of the Bands or DJ party time WE ARE HIRING! * JOIN OUR TEAM * Youngwood Park N Pool is hiring employees for the 2019 season.
