3 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Parish Family, Pastor s Letter The Gospel today tells us about the story of the sinful woman who anointed Jesus feet. What does repentance consist of? Do you accept the meaning of repentance as merely saying, Lord, I am sorry! When these words come to mind, we associate them with sorrow and contrition. You will be forgiven, not because you are sorry for what you have done, but by loving and forgiving other people. The Lord says in the Scriptures, If you forgive man s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive, your sins are not forgiven. Another element for forgiveness of sins is Love. Peter denied the Lord three times. In order to reverse these denials, the Lord asked Peter a question three times. However, the Lord did not ask him, Peter, are you sorry that you denied me? Rather, the Lord asked, Peter, do you love me? Indeed, love is more important than sorrow. People who are sorrowful might not be loving, but, people who are loving are always sorrowful for the sins they have committed. This is what happened to Mary in the Gospel today. She was conscious of nothing else than a need, and, therefore, was overwhelmed with love for Jesus who could supply it and, thus, received forgiveness. Did not Jesus say to Mary, Your sins are forgiven Your faith has saved you; go in peace. If you fail to love, you will not be forgiven. If you fail to forgive other people, you will not be forgiven. We are all sinners. In order for us to be forgiven, the Lord asks of us, Do you have enough love in your heart? Do you have enough forgiveness in your heart to make you forgive those who have offended you? If you have these two, forgiveness is readily available to you. Let us ask the Lord today to bless us with these two graces to make us more loving, and to make us more forgiving so that in turn we may be forgiven. God bless you all. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. And I know that, if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will always trust you though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will not leave me to face my perils alone. - - Thomas Merton - - KNIGHTS TO HOST FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER The June Friday Night Dinner hosted by the St. Thomas More Council of the Knights of Columbus of Westwood/Hillsdale will be held on June 17. The menu for the evening will be Black Angus barbecued sliced steak, baked potato, green beans almondine and a tossed salad. The cost is $12 per person or $30 for a family consisting of parents and minor-aged children and includes dessert, soda, coffee and tea. The hall, located at 40 Crest Street, Westwood, will open at 6:00 PM and dinner will be served at 6:30 PM. Because of the popularity of the dinners you are urged to make reservations by calling Mike DeAngelo at by June 15. The Westwood/Hillsdale Knights host a Friday Night Dinner every third Friday of the month from April to November. The proceeds of the dinners are used to fund various charities supported by the Knights. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Cub Scouts Parvuli Dei Award Nathaniel Veit was awarded the Parvuli Dei religious emblem in Scouting. The ceremony took place this year on February 7 in the Sacred Heart Basilica. Nathaniel is a Webelos Cub Scout from Pack 335 in River Vale. The purpose of the Parvuli Dei (Children of God) emblem is to help young boys explore activities to discover the presence of God in their daily lives, and also to develop a good, positive self-image through the contributions they can make to their community RELIGIOUS EDUCATION We are still registering families in our Religious Education Program with children in grades 1 8. Please go to our website to learn about our program options or download a registration form. Feel free to stop by the Religious Education Office in the Parish Center to register as well. We are in need of volunteer catechists on Sundays, 9 10:15 AM and Mondays, 3:45 5:00 PM. Please call the office to share your gift of passing on the faith to our youngest parishioners.

SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER SACRED EARTH, SACRED TRUST We are celebrating two significant dates this week connected to Pope Francis encyclical Laudato Si On Care for our Common Home. June 12 marks six months after the Paris Climate Agreement and June 18 is the first anniversary of the publication of the encyclical. Faith communities around the world will come together in celebration of our common home and to escalate our call for action on climate change. An expedition to the North Pole arrived on Earth Day Pope Francis sent a letter to the expedition saying: Thank you for bringing the Laudato Si cry to the polar ice for future generations. I am convinced the problem is serious and initiatives like yours are helping raise awareness about environmental degradation, depletion of the natural resources, pollution and also the severe wealth inequality. At exactly the same time at the United Nations in New York, the Paris Agreement signature ceremony took place and over 170 nations signed the treaty.
