ANDREW S All adults who come in contact with our young children and teens during their volunteering in our parish ministries MUST BE VETTED THROUGH THE ARCHDIOCESE S PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN (PGC) PROGRAM which includes filling out the Volunteer Application Package paperwork, submitting to a Background Check and attending a PGC Training Session. The next PGC Training Session being held at St. Andrew s is on Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 PM in the MPR in the Parish Center. All volunteers (including church ushers) must be compliant with the Archdiocese s guidelines. Cardinal Tobin will lead a prayer service, Longing for Life...We Wait in Darkness, on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 PM in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. This is the second prayer service in recognition of the victims of clergy abuse, for families of the accused, and for the Church. All are welcome. NEXT WEEK S READINGS - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 THE BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE is available in the Church to inscribe the names of beloved deceased family members and friends. 3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A VETERANS DAY PRAYER What is Stewardship? The word stewardship is the English translation of a Greek term formed from two words: manage and house. A steward is someone who manages someone else s house (that is, all the owner s possessions). God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and who laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. The word steward (or stewardship ) is found 87 times in the New Testament. For example, Paul speaks of himself as a steward of the Gospel. He has received the good news from the Lord, and it has been given to him so that he can share it with others. In two passages of Luke s Gospel, it is even on the lips of Jesus. New Testament writers use the words steward and stewardship to make the point that all people are God s stewards, because everything that exists belongs to God. Laws about ownership can help to keep good order in society. But legal ownership can be deceptive. A person only owns something in the sense that other human beings can t claim it for themselves. For example, to take another person s car is auto theft. But, in relation to God, no one ultimately owns anything. God is the owner of everything that exists. God created it, and it is God who continually keeps it in existence. That is a fundamental element of stewardship. Everything belongs to God. Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor! Let the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! -Concord Pastor Thanksgiving Food Baskets The Social Concerns Ministry is once again asking for your generous participation in our Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets. We will be distributing reusable bags along with a suggested Thanksgiving menu after all the Masses this weekend, Nov Please return the filled bags to the Church garage before all the Masses on Sunday, Nov. 18 between 8:00 AM and 12 noon. Special Noon Mass A special Mass and a support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at the Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, on Saturday, November 17, at 12:00 noon. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly affected by the abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. For information please call Cardinal Tobin will be the celebrant at the December 15 Mass. Thank you in advance for your support. St. Andrew s Children s Christmas Pageant Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 PM Calling all 3rd and 4th graders. It s your turn to perform in our annual Christmas Pageant. 6th graders are called to be narrators. Contact the Religious Education Office no later than Nov. 26 if you would like to participate. Attendance at all 3 rehearsals is mandatory!
