1 March 2017 First United Methodist Church of Wabash, Indiana F I R S T E D I T I O N Mission Statement To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our Covenant Together: Love. Lead. Teach. Transform. THE PASTOR S PAGE 110 N. Cass Street, Wabash, IN The first day of March is the first day of Lent this year. Lent is an important time of the Christian year. We focus ourselves on the grace of God. If we are intentional, we position ourselves for spiritual growth. We do this through pledging ourselves to spiritual disciplines. This year there are two options I invite you to. There are a plethora of other options, there are just two we are doing as a congregation. First, please join me in reading through the gospel of Matthew. I just found NT Wright s Lent for Everyone book as a reading plan on the YouVersion Bible app. Or, you can buy the book on Amazon or Alibris.com. Or you can just follow along reading the Bible passages listed in the bulletin and on Facebook every week. Doing this together as a congregation will give you the opportunity to mature in your understanding of the Story God is telling while helping you make connections with others in the congregation. There will also be a group conversation offered at the 9 a.m. hour for anyone who wants to attend. I pray you take the opportunity. You will be blessed if you do. Another option is the 40 bags in 40 days Elizabeth mentions in her article. Reducing clutter-without replacing it-can be a holy experience. We renounce the American proclivity to the worship of stuff. We confess our need for simplicity. We declare dependence on God-- and not our goods-- to get us through. I pray whatever you engage the Spirit and the path of Christ whatever you choose to do. Shalom, Rev. Kurt Senior Pastor Rev. Kurt Freeman Pastor of Visitation Rev. 6 Lent is upon us. No, this is not a time to clean out the dryer vent that is lint. Although, if you haven t cleaned it out recently it would be a good idea to do so! Lent is a time we set aside each year as we prepare for Easter. This is the 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays. We usually take this time to sacrifice something, or give something up, in order to grow closer to the Lord. I challenge you to do something more than give up chocolate, or soda, or something else that you are going to just go back to doing again after Easter. Take this time seriously. Find something significant you can do. The idea of Lent is giving up something we are so used to doing, or having, that we think we need it, even though we really do not need it at all. One year, very early in our marriage, Kurt and I were having this discussion and I came up with the brilliant idea that electricity was one of those things. We really do not need it to live. So we decided that any electricity, outside that needed to do our jobs, we would give up. It was a very interesting time. We did decide that we needed to turn the lights back on for the Bible study we were hosting at the time. This year, we are doing the 40 bags in 40 days challenge. Our daily goal is to fill at least a grocery bag with stuff we no longer need. Some of this may end up at Lighthouse, or Jackin-the Box, or even Solid Waste or recycling. I m not going to clean out the entire garage in a day, just one shelf, or one cabinet. It is small steps that can make a big change. If you do not have a significant Lent sacrifice planned, why not join us in this? During your challenge, if you find yourself struggling, pray this prayer, Lord, let my hunger for you be greater than my hunger for (Fill in the blank with whatever it is you are giving up). One Lent, a lady we know gave up smoking using this very prayer. Choose to sacrifice, take small steps, grow closer to God. Make Lent significant this year!
