So often the answer to this is No but it seems there is a bigger problem with Advent it has an identity crisis! A big part of this identity problem lies in the fact that its much larger sibling, Christmas, overshadows it. Advent, and the celebration of this season, just gets in the way of the Christmas machine we so often get caught up in. In fact, Christmas often seems to simply run over and crush Advent before it has the opportunity to get going. What is Advent? Advent comes from the Latin word adventus which means arrival or coming, referring to a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas as well as the return of Jesus at the second coming. So, Advent, when it was first celebrated, was a period of preparation for Jesus second arrival. In time, however, the remembrance of his first arrival, his birth, began to take precedence over the approaching second coming. And now, we just spend the better part of two months getting ready for Christmas while wearing ourselves out and into a frenzy. Over the next few weeks we will be talking with the children about how we can reclaim Advent and why it is important we mark it and use it as a source of calm, rather than being just one more thing we have to do? A careful, prayerful and intentional Advent season tends to have a significant impact on our celebration of Christmas. When we observe Advent, some pre-christmas activities are often seen in a different light becoming less important and even non-essential. Advent can help us slow down and pace ourselves. A slower pace makes us more aware of the promptings of the Holy Spirit, opening our eyes to that which is Holy around us. In the early church and, to this day, in the Orthodox Church, Advent began on November 15, 40 days before Christmas. This season was much like Lent, a season of dedication to prayer and repentance in which Christians prepared themselves for Christ s Second Coming. For us, the first Sunday of Advent this year will be Sunday 2 nd December, and we have already marked the first week, and the lighting of the first candle, representing Hope in our worship within school this week. We will continue to look at this, and the themes of the different aspects of advent over the coming weeks. Please take a moment to read this wonderful piece of writing by Zack. Macbeth, a play by Shakespeare is the story of strong, powerful man who wants to become king at any cost. In this play, we learn that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth will stop at nothing to become King and Queen of Scotland. At first the two main characters are introduced as being well thought of and very loyal. By the end of the play. We see them die due to their disgrace and guilt. Some people think it s the witches who encorreged Macbeth to do the bad things he is doing but it is also his own fault as he listened to what the witches said two him but he shouldn t have listened to what they had to say to him. In my essay I will explane all the points of view of the arguments they all have to say. Some people think that it was his fault that he behaved the way he did as he listened to what the witches said to him. In addition he asked the witches to tell him about what was going to happen in his future. Another reason that Macbeth is to blame is he listens to what Lady Macbeth had to say. He should not had listened to Lady Macbeth because she just wanted him to kill Duncan so she could become queen. Through out the story Macbeth listened to what people told him to do when he should of made his own decisions for him self. The reason he went crazy was because he did what people told him. Thank you for your support Animal Oddities visited year 2 and brought some special visitors from the deserts, rainforests and grasslands of Africa. The children had a wonderful time! Craft Workshops Thank you to the parents who joined Mrs Redmayne to make Christmas lantern decorations during our Craft Workshops. All parents are welcome to attend on Thursday afternoons look out for future dates in the new year. Allergies in school Please may we remind you that we have several children in school with severe nut allergies, therefore, please do not send in any food items that include nuts, including packed lunch items. They made spears so they could catch fish witch they made out of stones and sticks. They also used spears to kill dears. They used to fix their spears if they were broken and they used honey to fix it. Neil- Tools They made the spears top bits as making a type of Stone Age glue. They killed the animals since they didn t have any food. The Stone Age people banged stones so they could get a shape of a tool. Hand axes were made for cutting meat or plants or if there was a big animal. Arrows were made for killing fast animals unless they were slow. Scrapers were for cleaning animal skin although it was hard. After they killed an animal they cooked it under a fire and then eat it. Isobel- Hunting and gathering Have you ever thought how Stone Age people got their food? Are you aware that they had to get their own food? Stone Age people drank mammoth s blood and brains. Mammoth s tongue was good for babies and old people to suck. Tusks were good for making spears. Surprisingly bigger bones were used for houses while the weather was cold also it was quicker to build a house. They used flint to cut up food because it saved them from ripping it apart. VACANCY SCHOOL CLEANER 15 Hours per week, term time only plus some school holiday cleaning Overleigh St Mary s CE Primary School has a vacancy for a school cleaner to commence as soon as possible. We seek to appoint a well motivated and enthusiastic person with excellent time keeping and team working skills. The ideal candidate will ideally have a background in cleaning, will work as part of a team and will clean designated areas to ensure that they are kept in a clean and hygienic condition. Working hours will be 3.15pm-6.15pm each day, (term time plus some holiday cleans) Grade SCP 1.

4 Chester Cathedral Christmas Tree All our classes have been busy contributing towards decorating our school s Christmas tree in Chester Cathedral courtesy of our PTA. The Day the Crayons Quit was the inspiration for the design of our tree. It has been adorned with a rainbow of crayons made of card, paper and clay reflecting the creative children we have at Overleigh. Hopefully there will be no crayons complaining and quitting on our tree!! From 1st December until 6th January you will be able to view our School Christmas Tree in Chester Cathedral, please visit and vote for our tree. Christmas Post Box The Christmas post box starts on Monday please ensure cards have the child s full name including last name and class on the front of the envelope. Thank you Downing Street for your wonderful class assembly! Year 2 Creeping Toad Our visitor came in and inspired Year 2 to make pop up books to use as story plans and prompts. We went on to write our own fabulous stories! Thank you Tackling child abuse is all our responsibilities We all know that every child has a right to be safe and should be protected from all forms of abuse and neglect, however some people do not act when they are concerned about a child as they are worried about being wrong. The Department for Education has relaunched their national campaign called Together, we can tackle child abuse, to help address this issue. The Council are sharing their message to ensure we protect children in our area. The campaign asks everyone to help protect children and young people by looking out for the ABC warning signs. These include changes in a child or young persons: Appearance: such as unusual injuries or consistently poor hygiene. Behaviour: such as being withdrawn, overly anxious, disruptive or self-harming or any other sudden changes in behaviour. Communication: such as talking aggressively, using sexual language or becoming secretive. Many people think it s the job of people who work directly with children to make the report or are worried about being wrong. You don t have to be absolutely certain, if you are concerned about a child, please report it to our children s social care team and they will look into it. Information is usually gathered from a number of sources and your report would form one part of a bigger picture. Please help us to keep an eye out for our local children as you go about your day to day life. Safeguarding is everyone s responsibility and we must work together to support and protect children at the earliest opportunity. If you suspect child abuse or neglect, call Children s Social Care on during office hours or in evenings and weekends to make a report. If you are concerned that a child is in immediate danger please call Police on 999.

5 Year One witnessed a re-enactment of the Great Fire of London at Overleigh! Head Pupil Election The election was held in school parliament week. The overall winner was Isla from year 6 who represents the Vision party and they will have 500 to spend for the good of all the pupils in the school. Emma Drew the Headteacher commented I am very proud of all the candidates who were an excellent positive role model for all. I am sure they will be great future leaders. Football Success The football team won their first cup match of the season with an away match against Lache Primary. They dominated the play throughout the two halves and the final score was 4-1 to Overleigh. Well done to all the players who showed great spirit throughout the match. CLEANER VACANCY St Mary s Handbridge Centre is looking for a cleaner for around 6 hours per week, spread over 3 days. More brilliant writing inspired by MacBeth from Maddie in year 6 Dear Sir or Madam I have been invited to the home of H.R.H. Queen Macbeth to observe her unusual sleep patterns over the last few weeks. Nurse Michi her graces loyal chambermaid has felt a dire need to seek medical advice over this out of character behaviour. Two weeks ago today, I observed the actions and behaviour of Lady Macbeth while she slept. After as little as half an hour of sleep she began to murmur and shake. Her eyes flickered and opened. Soon after this she slowly got up out of bed. I witnessed her walk to her basin. Although her eyes were open and she was speaking, she clearly had no control over her body. She started violently scrubbing at her hands, making painful-looking red blotches appear all over them. Sometime later she started speaking again, clearer than before. I could make out full sentences. Her sentences were suspicious. She said things like who would have thought that the old man held so much blood in him?, Banquos buried! and The Thane of Fife had a wife, where is she now? The fact that these statements linked perfectly with the rumours going around is extremely worrying. Although she appeared to stare a Nurse Michi and I, she was actually looking straight through us. These actions, which came from an insane mind, indicate that her royal highness is not well. From this I conclude she has been greatly stressed by something and that it is indeed possible that she has seen something horrific. My respectful opinion is that she needs serious help. Therefore, I suggest both help for the head and help for the mind. For her highness stressed head, I advise a blend of honey and mint to soothe any pain and to make rest easier. For the mind, I suggest a few sessions with a counsellor. On a final note, I greatly advise that Lady Macbeth s case should be taken as a matter of great urgency. Yours sincerely Doctor Lawrence

6 Thank you to the year 1 parents and families who joined us for lunch this week in Cosmic Canteen and thank you for your wonderful feedback! We all thoroughly enjoyed Great Orme s class worship! Forces Year 5 have designed and made their own parachutes to explore the effects of air resistance. They observed which type of material, shape and size made the most effective parachute. Year 6 Visit to Culmington Manor The children had a wonderful time at Culmington Manor, in spite of the the freezing temperatures. They challenged themselves by carrying out a number of physical activities, including abseiling, zip-wire, shooting and even caving in a man-made underground maze. They really enjoyed themselves and their behaviour was excellent throughout the trip.
