3 YEAR 3 - GOD'S LOVE IS GREAT PRESCHOOL CHILDREN'S LESSON - 23 UNIT 4: LESSON 23: GOD REVEALS HIS LOVE THROUGH JESUS Jesus' Ministry FEEDING THE FIVE THOUSAND Scripture: Matthew 14:15-21; Mark 6:35-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-14 Aim: Story Overview: Memory Verse: Memory Verse Song: Scripture Song: For the child to learn that he or she can show love by sharing. Jesus fed over 5,000 people with one boy s small lunch. "Let us love one another, for love comes from God." (1John 4:7a) I John 4:7a - Sung to a favourite song in your country. "Let Us Love" Additional Verse: "God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7) Craft: Bag Basket with Bread and Fish Note to leader: Use this printed story as a guide only. Please pray, prepare, and practice using an NIV Bible. The suggestions for story telling are merely ideas. Please pray for God-given creativity as you share His story. Long Bible Story: Who feeds you when you re hungry? Mom and Dad? They take very good care of you. They make sure you have all you need. They love you and share all they have with you. Our Bible tells us about a big crowd of people who were very hungry. They had nothing to eat. They had been following Jesus all day long and were very far from their homes and villages. Everywhere Jesus went, He was followed by crowds of people. They wanted to hear Him teach about God and how much God loved each one of them. This particular day, the crowds had followed Jesus far away from their homes and villages. They had walked miles and miles to hear Jesus teach and to watch as He healed the sick. After Jesus healed all the sick people, He sat down and taught the crowd of people about God. The people noticed it was getting late when the sun started going down. They had been so amazed at all the good things Jesus was doing that they had forgotten they had no food. But now they were getting hungry. They were a long way from their homes, and there were no stores in the countryside. But Jesus knew this, and He knew just how He was going to take care of them. Jesus saw how tired and hungry they were; He said to His helpers, "Let's give the people something to eat." p.3
4 One of Jesus' helpers said they didn't have enough money to buy food for so many people. Besides, there was no place to buy food. The helper said, "Send the people away, so they can go into the villages to buy food for themselves." Another helper said, "There is one small boy here who has a lunch. He only has five loaves and two fishes, and that won't be nearly enough to feed all these people. Jesus told His helpers to have all the people sit down on the grass in small groups. So, about 5,000 men sat down. Then Jesus took the five small loaves and two fishes from the boy s lunch basket. Jesus looked up to heaven and thanked God for the bread and fish. Then He gave the bread and fish to those who were seated. Jesus' helpers were surprised as they passed around the food. There was always more food no matter how much a hungry person took from the basket. There was plenty for all the people to eat. When the people had finished eating, Jesus told His helpers to gather what was left. He wanted nothing wasted. Do you think there was anything left? Yes, there were twelve baskets of food left over! Everyone there that day saw what had happened. Jesus had taken a little boy's lunch and had made it into enough food to feed thousands of people. How did He do it? It was a miracle something only Jesus could do! Jesus wanted to share His love with all those people. In return, the little boy wanted to share all that he had, his small basket of lunch. Short Bible Story: One day when Jesus was in the country, He was teaching and healing the sick people. A very large crowd had gathered to watch and listen to Jesus teach about how much God loved them. They were so amazed by all that Jesus was teaching that they didn't notice how late it was getting. They had forgotten that they had no food. But Jesus knew this, and He knew just how He was going to take care of them. Jesus saw how tired and hungry they were; He said to His helpers, "Let's give the people something to eat." One of Jesus' helpers said, "There is one small boy here who has a lunch. He only has five loaves and two fishes, but that won't be enough to feed all these people!" There were many, many people there. Jesus had fed thousands of people with just a little boy's lunch. It was a miracle something that only Jesus could do! Jesus wanted to share His love with all those people. In return, the little boy wanted to share all that he had, his small basket of lunch. Life Application: God showed us His great love by sending Jesus to us. We can show our love for others by sharing what we have. What do you have that you can share with others? Thank you, Lord, for helping us learn to share. p.4

11 PARENTS HOME PAPERS CBSI Preschool Year 3 Lesson 23 SOMEONE S COMING FOR DINNER Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you learn that you ll be hosting unexpected dinner guests? What if you were suddenly faced with feeding 5,000 hungry men plus their wives and children? What would you do? Today your children heard how this very same situation was no problem for Jesus. (John 6:1-14) Jesus example of feeding a huge crowd with just one small boy s lunch teaches us that love can be shown by sharing with others. Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many? (John 6:9) How do we teach our children to extend hospitality without complaining about it? As usual, turn to the Bible. Peter says very simply: Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. (1 Peter 4:9) Do you do that? What do your children learn about hospitality as they watch you preparing for guests? Does it look like this? Company s coming pick up your toys in the living room, Matthew! Finish setting the table, Emma! Jack, put a clean shirt on! Hurry, do it now before they arrive! When we entertain friends and acquaintances in our homes, do our children learn to enjoy the people who come and to welcome the opportunity to share their time and space with them? Or do they resent the stressful atmosphere created by your unreal expectations? Remember how Jesus rebuked Martha under similar circumstances: Martha, Martha you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. (Luke 10:41-42a) Keep in mind that when Jesus fed that huge crowd, He did it in an extremely casual setting with a simple menu that was much appreciated. In the New Testament, Jesus talks about the judgment in the future when He will come in His glory as we are all gathered before Him. He will separate the people from the nations before Him, sending some to eternal fire and others to inherit the kingdom of God with Him. Those who are blessed are those who fed the hungry just as He did that day on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat thirsty and you gave Me something to drink was a stranger and you invited Me in I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me. (Matthew 25:35-40) But how can we do this when our lives are so busy, our calendars so crowded, and our time so limited? The answer, as always, is found in God. Do you depend on His help, or do you try to extend hospitality in your own strength? Jesus once said that we would do as He has done, and even greater things than these. (John 14:12b) It seems impossible, yet He said it, so it must be true. It must be possible to extend ourselves beyond what we thought we ever could because God will work through us if only we will allow Him. Remember, Jesus would tell you exactly what He told Martha: only one thing is needed. p.11
