1 Trinity United Methodist Danville, Pennsylvania Called to Follow Jesus and Serve All September 2013 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them was written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. John 21:24-25 Greetings in the Name of Jesus: At the very end of the Gospel of John, after twenty-one chapters of teachings and miracles indeed, at the very end of the four gospels we read the above printed passage. The author of John was correct. At the time he wrote this, there were dozens of other gospels circulating some which have been lost to us and others that have survived the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Bartholomew, the Protevangelium of James, the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. There were so many gospels, of such varying authenticity, that the early church had to determine which should be given official approval. Over several decades, the early church set the cannon of our New Testament. Yet what remained was anything but tidy. The church quite deliberately chose not one gospel, but four. These four differ significantly at some points, they flatly contradict each other. You can also say they broaden each other. For many of us these discrepancies make the Bible more believable. The Bible does not try to hide them. It presents them candidly, as the wrinkles and beauty marks of an old and trusted friend. As the author of John said, there are many things to be told, so many ways of telling them, that the whole world could not contain them all. Not only is holiness bigger than you or me it is bigger than the Bible itself. Just something for you to think about. See you on Sunday! God Bless You; Pastor Ron
2 Page 2 Where are the birthdays & anniversaries? Beginning this month, we will no longer publish the birthdays and anniversaries in the newsletter. Pastor Ron will announce these special events from the pulpit on Sunday mornings. What is the reason for this? Simply put, it is for your protection. Our newsletter is published on our website so that visitors have access to events and news of Trinity. But this means that the information we publish is also available to people who do not have noble intentions. Birthdates and anniversaries are often used by scammers and identity thieves. We felt it was prudent to stop publishing this information. Altar Flowers for September Sept 1: Barron & Jordan families Sept 8: Needs a sponsor! Sept 15: Mike & Julie Enright Sept 22: Needs a sponsor! Sept 29: John & Joan Baxter Reminder: if you would like the altar flowers to take home, please pick them up by 10:00am on Monday or call the church office to make other arrangements! Danville Riverside Food Bank requests for September: Canned vegetables UMCOR requests for September: Fingernail clipper Congregational Care Team for September: Valerie Thomas, David & Barb Barron Joys & Concerns Blessings and best wishes to Stephanie Boudeman & Jereme Tom on their recent marriage. Stephanie is the daughter of Bill & Kathy Boudeman. Blessings and welcome to Aiden Emerson Faust, son of Dale & Kayla Faust, and grandson of Debbie Lewellen. Our condolences to June & Dave Curran on the passing of June s mother, Dorothy Tippett, from life to life eternal. Early this month we will be mailing statements of giving from January 1- August 25. We hope these statements will be useful to you in planning your giving. Along with the statement, we will send information about how we are using your tithes and offerings to further our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of Danville and the world. Future statements will be mailed quarterly. End-of-theyear statements will continue to be available upon request. Be on the look-out for an updated church directory no photos but new members and updated addresses will be added from our last publication. The directories will be available at the Information Desk by September 8th.
3 Page 3 Fellowship Hour Sunday, September 8 following 10:30am service Please bring a snack, dessert or finger sandwiches to share! Since we have gone green in the kitchen, assistance will be needed with clean-up! Please ask how you can help. Fall Lunch & Learn Tuesday, September 24 11:30am Special Guest Speaker: Ronda Peters, Neighborhood Center Kindly make a reservation on the bulletin board if you plan to attend! Movie Night: Paul The Emissary Thursday, October 3 7:00pm The early followers of Jesus were a small, struggling group that posed no threat to anyone. But there was one determined to see this fledgling faith exterminated. His name was Saul, and he became the greatest persecutor of the early church. But within a few years, the Christians fiercest opponent became its most effective advocate. Saul his name changed to Paul went on to become the greatest missionary in the history of Christianity. Over 40 children attended our Liberty Village VBS we also had that many volunteers helping to create a colonial village right here at Trinity. The children learned about the faith of their forefathers, sang patriotic songs, tasted Colonial fare, played games and more! The children donated supplies and helped to assemble 50 school kits for UMCOR. The school kit bags were handmade by many women of the church. The completed bags, plus additional school supplies, will be delivered to Mission Central. The White House attic

Tammy will be responsible for planning & implementing programs for children, youth and families who belong to the Trinity congregation, as well as visitors and members of our community. Growth in the love of Christ, relationship building and opportunities to serve will be at the core of these programs. Just as in our recent, wildly successful VBS, volunteers will be essential to the success of these programs. Please prayerfully consider using the gifts that God has given you to help in His work!
