JESUS IS CHRISTMAS The beautiful words and images of the Advent season remind us that our mission is to reveal Jesus to the world. Sadly, we find ourselves in a society where the Christian message seems increasingly irrelevant. Proclaiming the birth of Jesus Christ the Savior seems a difficult task in the current climate, yet the late John Paul II reminded us that... the Church s gift to the world is the offering of hope, Jesus Christ is that hope. One way we can proclaim the Gospel this Christmas is to look for opportunities to ensure that Jesus is the focus of Christmas in our home, in our workplaces and communities. Each year we are reminded by the images of the baby in the Bethlehem manger that Christmas is the celebration of God s greatest gift to humanity, the gift of ultimate love, the gift of God s self through Jesus. Christmas is the celebration of God s Son revealed to the world. We are now invited to be part of that mission revealing Jesus to the world through our words and actions. HISTORY AND SYMBOLISM OF THE ADVENT WREATH Using the Advent wreath to count the weeks before Christmas almost certainly originated in ancient harvest festivals of northern Europe. Evergreen branches were draped as decoration and wound round wagon wheels brought inside for the winter. These year-end celebrations were marked as well by feasting and the lighting of lamps against the growing darkness. Early Christians adapted these traditions to fit their celebration of the birth of Christ. The Advent wreath stands in our midst as a symbol of Christ who comes to save us. The growing light of the Advent wreath is a symbol of Christ who shatters the darkness of sin and death. Each week as the light grows stronger; we grow stronger too in our reverence for and commitment to Christ. The growing light helps us recognize Christ not only in the historical event we celebrate at Christmas but in our lives today and in the hope we carry as we prepare for the coming fullness of God s reign. Evergreen branches also symbolise Christ. As evergreens stand firm against the barren winter, Christ stands firm against the barrenness of sin and death, beckoning us to eternal life. The circular shape of the wreath reminds us that all is complete in Christ and that all is brought to perfect union in him.

6 SPORTS NEWS Congratulations to the Girls and Boys Resurrection LaCrosse Teams. On Friday the 21st November, our two teams competed in their very first LaCrosse Victoria Tournament for the Western Region. This tournament is not run through school sports Victoria and we played against some very tough schools that we would not normally compete against; many of these schools play LaCrosse at a club level and have the sport in their Interschool Sport competitions. Our students had mostly never heard of LaCrosse until last term when we decided to introduce something new to them. Boy did they ever take to LaCrosse! We have had students so such skill and determination, watching their development over the past few months has been fantastic, these children have shown that they can work cohesively as a team, building rapport and showing incredible sportsmanship and flair. On the day both our teams were incredibly nervous, not knowing if what they had worked so hard to achieve was enough, especially against schools that had so much more experience. Both teams worked so hard, giving it everything they got, showing that effort and determination as well as good spirits and kindness, can really pay off. Our boys and girls both came runners up on the day, losing the Grand Final by a whisker. To both our teams, I commend you on your hard work, loyalty, the friendships between you all and I cannot say how proud I am of all the extra work you all put in to make this day achievable, all the lunchtimes you gave up and your willingness to learn new things. Congratualtions to our LaCrosse teams of 2014!
7 PARISH NEWS Pope Francis Daily Meditations Do you know that the Vatican Press Office publishes a summary of Pope Francis daily homilies? The summary is less than an A4 size; but they are well worth reading. Simply go to the Vatican site and scroll onto Daily Meditations. Don t forget to request the English translation. Alternatively you can go to our web site and follow the link. Adoration during Advent During Advent there will be opportunities for parishioners to have some quiet time and prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The times are: Thursday 4 December between pm Monday 8 December (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) 6.30pm 7.30pm Monday 22 December 6.30pm 7pm Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent During Advent there will be additional opportunities for parishioners to experience God s healing within the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Those opportunities are: Thursday 4 December between 7.30pm 8.30pm Saturday 6 December between 9.30am 10am Monday 8 December (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) 6.30pm 7.30pm Saturday 20 December between 9.30am 10am Parish Ministry - How will you serve? Serving others is central to being a Christian. It is recorded John s Gospel that after Jesus had washed the disciples feet he said, So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet (Jn. 13:14). The word Ministry comes from a Latin word meaning service. Every Christian should take this instruction of Jesus seriously. Most Catholics serve others by participating in a ministry in their parish. Are you following Jesus instruction? In what way do you serve? It does not matter if you are new to Resurrection or you have been here for a long time there is a ministry for you. Please read the description of each Resurrection Ministry in the Big Bulletin and then make a one year commitment to at least one Ministry. Complete the attached form and return to the Parish Office or Welcome Desk. All Ministries commence 1 st February Car Blessings Parishioners from time to time ask Fr Noel to bless their new car. Fr Noel is more than happy to bless cars. However whilst after Mass might be the best time for parishioners, it is not the best time for Fr Noel. One only has to stand back and look at the number of parishioners who approach Fr Noel after Mass to realize the pressure he is under at that time. Should you wish to have your car (or home) blessed the best thing to do is contact the Parish Office and make an appointment (Saturday mornings and Monday and Thursday evenings are usually good). Christmas Break-up Each year on the 1 st Wednesday of December (3 December this year) instead of having our Parish Meeting Night we have a Christmas party. This is an opportunity for all parishioners who are committed to a Parish Group, a Parish Ministry, or who help in any way whatsoever (Working Bees, delivering Christmas and Easter brochures etc.) to come together to meet, greet, share and celebrate the great spirit that is Resurrection Parish. If joining your fellow Resurrection parishioners for this fun night you are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share. End of Year School Mass The end of year Thanksgiving School Mass will be celebrated in our church at 9.15am on Thursday 4 December; all welcome. Monday 22 December 6.30pm 7pm. Christmas Needs You Do you realize that with six Christmas Masses this year over 450 parishioners are required to exercise one ministry or another? Each Mass requires 4 Proclaimers, Special Ministers of Communion, 6-8 Hospitality Ministers, Collectors, 20+ in each Choir, 2 (at least) car park attendants, 1 Mass Overseer, 1 Data Projectionist, 6 handing out Christmas Bulletins, 4 to straighten chairs etc. after each Mass. This does not include the required to deliver the Christmas brochures.
