TRINITY BELLS JULY 2011 My Dear Trinitarians, After a Winter such as the one we just had, many folk look forward to not being cooped up anymore. A natural wish, when the bad weather has prevented much activity besides just staying indoors. Similarly people look forward to driving again after recovery from surgery being able to be out and about. Life moves in cycles and stages for all sorts of reasons, and whether we like it or not, we are called on many times in this life to shift our boundaries, to change our perspective about our world how it works, where it begins and ends and who is in it. One of the most exciting expressions of this kind of sense of being cut loose, or of changed perspective is when it leads to excitement, vision, commitment and a sense of new possibility. (Now, that excitement can also be exhausting and a little overwhelming think of new parents but in such times we always do learn a great deal about who we really are and where we are called to go. ). I truly believe that we find ourselves at such a point in time here at Trinity. We are called by our Bishop, our situation, and most importantly by the Gospel to imagine a church without walls make that Church Without Walls! We are so much more than a group of Christians that gathers in this building, no matter how much we love the building and how much it speaks to us of God. We are not a collection of insiders and everyone who doesn t belong to our parish is an outsider. We are agents of God, called and empowered to do God s work in the world not just inside the walls but in the world. We have living water, abundant life and the greatest gift of all that we are called to share without limits. Our Trinity Mission Journey is, in the end, about what it will look like to re-vision our common life to really be God s agents (who happen for the time being to be gathered at Trinity parish in Roslyn). What will we look like when we fully realize who we are? I cannot wait to see! With love to you in Christ,

FROM THE WARDENS It s been a busy nine months at Trinity from last September to now. Beyond the many beautiful moments we have shared in our services and social gatherings, much of our energy has been focused on our Mission Journey, which we hope will clarify our role as God s people here on Long Island and help guide us into the future. A leadership team of the Rector, Wardens John Platt and Don Krug, Jeff Price, and Tom Cammisa has been supported by the Vestry (both past and present members) and many parishioners. The table discussions on All Saints Sunday led to cottage meetings in January, which led to the formation of some working groups at the annual meeting in February. They coalesced around these general areas:! Arts and culture*! Outreach into the community! Seniors! Media (including the possibility of a low-watt radio station) While it s still early in the process, there is progress to report. The outreach team s initiative to drop off children s books at local laundromats is proving popular, and they convened a meeting at Trinity with their counterparts at the other three parishes in the cluster. Plans are underway for a theatrical production in the fall, among other cultural activities, and the idea of using Penson Hall for a community open mic was tested recently in partnership with the Guitar School. On the other hand, the obstacles to getting a radio license have been too formidable to make that a viable notion. We were inspired by a visit in April from Bishop Larry, who engaged in a fireside chat about mission, moderated by Jeff Price. He encouraged us to think outside the box and gave examples of churches which responded to needs in their communities in creative ways. We shouldn t think of church as something that just happens on Sunday and mission as something that is assigned to other people to do. He gave us a lot of food for thought, and while it s clear we have a long way to go, we seem to be headed in the right direction. Even as summer plans may draw some of us away from Trinity at times, we hope the mission journey will continue. There is plenty of planning to do for the fall and beyond, and we are keenly aware of the need to shore up our finances. And there is always the call of those in need, both within the parish and the greater community. We are blessed with a strong core of smart, faithful parishioners. Thanks to all of you who are rising to the occasion. May the summer refresh your spirits and renew your commitments to our work together. Yours in Christ, John Platt Don Krug * Regarding Arts & Culture, a mission task group was formed for such purpose and a tentative schedule of events has been dreamed up- please see the Trinity Arts and Music (TAM) calendar elsewhere in this newsletter

TAG SALE ONCE AGAIN A SUCCESS Our annual Tag Sale was held on June 4th. A crowd lined up at 9 am to be the first in to check out the bargains, and bargains there were. Prices have not changed in over 25 years, and then they were low. People return year after year, many with stories of how they can find things they need and can afford. One woman told me of losing her job and being so happy to find books to read at 4/$1.00 to occupy her now empty hours. When all expenses were taken out, we made a profit of about $2,000, all of which went into the Outreach account to help those in need. Thanks to all who donated such nice clean things. Did you know we had a huge donation of items from the fabled Grenville Baker Boys and Girls designer clothing sale? Many parishioners helped with setting up, selling and the all important cleanup. After the sale Big Brothers, Big sister took the leftovers. This year for the first time a group called Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow picked up clothing appropriate for interviews and working in an office. They were especially happy to get a large supply of new bras. Oprah says everyone needs a good foundation!!! Thanks to Ann Mingorance for getting that donation. Special thanks to Ruth Fick and Sarane Ross who were also very helpful. I started working on the rummage sale back in 1968 when I was 8 months pregnant, and have gone on to chair it many, many times with other wonderful people. Now it's time for me to step down, and for others with new ideas and new energy to take over. I have very comprehensive files with detailed information about how the sale works, which I would like to pass on. Please speak to Margo if you would like to do this. Barbara Holzkamp OUTREACH PUTS A SMILE ON CHILDREN'S FACES Outreach has launched its new program supplying free books to children at the surrounding laundromats. We are already in four including Roslyn, Sea Cliff and two in Glen Cove. The books have been received with great enthusiasm! The children and their parents are very appreciative. Each week gently-used books for children are collected, cleaned and identified with a message from Trinity Church, put in bins, and then taken to the local laundromats promoting literacy and augmenting the school system. We have delivered over 500 books thus far, making the program a huge success. Thank you to everyone who has donated books, and a special thank you to Lindi Nubel and the Trinity Co-Op and Mary Ellen Hansen for the large donation of books from the schools. Dawn Weill KUDOS TO OUR KIDS Kenny Bongort has graduated from the Engineering Department at Cornell University, and Google has offered him a full time job as a Software Engineer beginning in Sept. Kaia debruin graduated with honors from Schreiber HS in Port Washington and is headed to Bates College in the Fall. Jonathan Galati was Valedictorian at No. Shore HS and will be attending Cornell.in the Fall. John Kavanagh is going to Roger Williams University and will study Mechanical Engineering in the Fall. Chris McCloskey has graduated HS and will be attending Fordham Business School in Sept.

OPEN MIC, OPEN TABLE On Sunday, March 20th, Trinity held an "Open Mike, Open Table" event that combined an open mic with a potluck dinner. About 40 people attended including many from outside the Trinity community. Those who volunteered to perform presented many familiar standards and newer pieces from the worlds of folk and popular music. All enjoyed the mixture of music, food and camaraderie. Many thanks to the Bongorts for pulling together this fun evening. We hope to see more in the future. ST. EXERTIOUS DAYS Quite a few Trinity parishioners showed up and lent a hand to spruce up the grounds on April 1 and April 16. Thanks to all who worked so hard! Due to popular demand, St. Exertious Day will become a monthly event on the first Saturday of each month starting with October 1 st, so plan to spend an hour or so with fellow parishioners in the outdoors- the fresh air and exercise are free! More info at later date. Eugenia and Brian Viners entertain the crowd ISABEL GLOMB S BIRTHDAY In March Trinity folks surprised Isabel with a cake & gifts on the occasion of her 94 th birthday! Who knew?!?

EASTER AT TRINITY April 24, 2011 ************ Pentecost celebration in Chapel with Jeff, Julia & JJ Price, Harry Clark & Taylor Evans

A SPRING CELEBRATION CONCERT 9/11 COMMEMORATION Exciting singing opportunity for all!!! On May 1 st, our organist, Martha Regelmann, and our wonderful soprano, Ariann Forella, performed as part of the Roslyn Chamber of Commerce program to bring arts to the community. This beautiful concert featured solo works for voice and piano ranging from classical gems to broadway classics. In addition, it raised over $600 for the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). NEW COMMUNICATION TO KEEP US CONNECTED! Look for This Week At Trinity - in your this Summer. As we all pursue special vacations and activities, we sometimes lose touch with our church community. My idea is to give a few short sentences about the upcoming Worship Service each week, highlighting aspects of the biblical themes and the musical connections. We have such a wonderful community, and I hope this helps keep our fellowship strong. Martha Regelmann On the afternoon of Sunday, September 11th, eight houses of worship in our area will be honoring the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 disaster with a beautiful commemoration at TEMPLE SINAI in Roslyn. Margo and I are working with the other clergy and music people to create a meaningful sharing of our traditions and our unified hopes for peace and reconciliation. Please plan to be part of this wonderful event. Two or three short rehearsals of this lovely, inspiring (familiar!) music will earn you a place in the choir. The Group pieces will be John Lennon's IMAGINE, LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH, and the National Anthem or one of our other beloved Patriotic anthems. Trinity is responsible for the "Welcoming the Stranger" portion of the program. We will sing the anthem from Bishop Larry's Consecration, ALL ARE WELCOME. There is a simple, yet beautiful and engaging Refrain for everyone to sing, interspersed with harmony parts for the more adventurous. There will be three scheduled rehearsals. If you can make any - or all, please help us represent Trinity in this special event. Dates for rehearsals will be sent out via . Martha Regelmann ~FYI~ The annual end-of-year picnic or BBQ is on hiatus

LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING BY PROFESSOR GORDON CAMPBELL On May 4, Gordon Campbell (Professor, Leicester University, UK) visited Trinity Church and gave an intriguing lecture on the complex history of the Kings James Version of the Bible (in celebration of its 400 th Anniversary). Campbell, in his only public appearance in NY, and author of newly-released Bible: The Story of the King James Version (Oxford University Press) presented a vivid and authoritative history of this renowned translation in a most engaging and charming way! He spoke of how this translation came to be commissioned, who the translators were and how the translation was accomplished. Produced during the lifetime of Shakespeare and Donne, the King James Version of the Bible has long been viewed as the most elegantly written and poetic of the many English translations. Now reaching its 400th anniversary, it remains one of the most frequently used Bibles in the English-speaking world, especially in America. Afterwards, attendees were able to meet Prof. Campbell and purchase signed books by him. BURNING BOOKS will meet again Tuesday, September 20, 7:30 at Trinity Church, hosted by Mary Lou Minard. The book to be read over the summer is Colm Toibin's "The Master," a novel about Henry James. We also suggest you choose any Henry James novel you have always wanted to read and we'll have a good HJ discussion when we meet again. We will also be looking for ideas for next year's books at that time, so read and read so you will have lots of suggestions! Happy summer to all, Jean Henning

ZANDER AAYAN RAOOF S BAPTISM- MAY 29, 2011 (Grandson of Rebecca & Nabil Raoof) HARRY S GODFATHER WEDS! On April 30 Harry's godfather, The Rev. Steve L. Foster married Dr. Krisann F. Johnson with The Right Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano celebrating and the Right Rev. Orris G. Walker assisting. A lovely catered affair followed in Penson Hall. SEXTON S CORNER Nice to be sitting here on a quiet Summer morning writing this after the winter and Spring we have experienced. As far removed (and forgotten?) the winter was, it was a brutal one in regards to the amount of snow, ice and cold weather we experienced. Plowing and shoveling were nonstop. There were so many areas requiring attention such as fire hydrants to be dug out and basement stairwells to be cleared - we were even made to clear the entire sidewalk along Northern Boulevard this year. The snow and ice damaged a number of our gutters and leaders, as well as removing a number of slate from the roofs. We are expecting a contractor to repair this damage in the next couple of weeks. We had also had three damaged Norway maples removed from the grounds for safety purposes as they were dying and had rotten trunks on them. What we didn't plan for was our lovely Japanese maple coming down in a recent storm on the front lawn. Three certified arborists looked at this tree and said that it couldn't be saved. We will try and plant an ornamental to replace it. I for one already miss it tremendously. In other news, we are hoping to have a monthly St. Exertious day starting in October to try and keep up with the many outdoor areas which comprise our property. We particularly loved this spring! Any input and/or suggestions regarding our physical plant are always welcome.
