1 DOCUMENT 16L KAMBUI PRESBYTERY REPORT TO THE 22 ND GENERAL ASSEMBLY APRIL 2018 THE KAMBUI MISSION HILL HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first GMS Missionaries to Kikuyu land were Rev. and Mrs. T. N. Krieger, who were Americans of German origin. On arrival in Kenya in 1897, the Kriegers spent a few months at Machakos with Peter Cameron Scott, an American Missionary of the Africa Inland Mission (AIM), who was working among the Akambas. In the same year, the Krieger moved on and temporarily settled at Marambu near Kibichoi along Ruiru River. They then moved on to Thimbigua along Riara Stream about five miles northwest of Nairobi. It was at Thimbigua that the Kriegers were joined by the Rev. William Porter Knapp and his wife Myrtle Isabelle Knapp, who also were missionaries from America. Mrs. Knapp was a teacher and she and her husband had only been married for a year before embarking on this mission work. The two were devout, evangelical Christians of the conservative persuasion. They were both resolute in character and confident in their ability to overcome the many challenges that they would come across. At their time of arrival the pestilence of small pox and famine were at the highest and disease, death and despair were everywhere. The Knapps were joined shortly afterwards by Dr. John E. Henderson, a Medical Doctor at Thimbigua. The three, subsequently moved on and became the founder of Mission in

2 1.0 INTRODUCTION P.C.E.A Presbytery is located within two sub-counties Githunguri Sub-County that carries the large part of it and Kiambu Sub-County the smaller part of it in Kiambu County. Her boundaries are along Kamiti River which borders Kiambu Presbytery and Kiamathare Presbytery to the south, Ruiru Presbytery to the east, Githunguri presbytery to the west and Komothai Presbytery to the North along Ruiru River. It comprises of four Parishes namely:- 1. Parish 2. Parish 3. Parish 4. 3 6.0 PRESBYTERY FUNCTIONS The Presbytery was engaged in the following activities: a) The Presbytery has held the meetings this year as categorized below:- TYPE OF THE MEETING 2017 FUNCTIONS Full Presbytery 4 Administrative Matters Category A 6 Pastoral Matters Finance Committee 4 Financial Matters Minister s Fraternal 2 To Promote Unity Elders-Ministers Fraternal 1 Fellowship b) Presbytery Annual Convention The Presbytery held its annual Convention on th August 2017 at P.C.E.A Kiambururu Church in Kiambururu Parish. Theme of the Convention was taken fro m Romans 8:17. Members were taught through Bible expositions especially on Faith, Spiritual growth among others. Three (3) people accepted Christ as their Saviour. All our four Parishes were able to hold their conventions in the year under review. Held their Convention on 14 th -16 th April,2017 with theme from Isaiah 3:10 had their annual Convention held on 28 th -30 th April, 2017 Kiambururu Held their Convention on 14 th -16 th April, 2017 held their Convention on 21 st -23 nd April, 2017 Members were taken through extensive bible expositions daily and through the word of God their Spiritual Faith and Knowledge was increased and out of this, 23 souls received Christ and other needs attended to. c) Civic Education The Presbytery through its JPRC carried out Civic education in all the Parishes. Members were educated on such topics as the rights of a voter, the role of a voter, voter s registration, the voter as a peacemaker, and qualities of a good leader. These topics helped members to make informed choices during the just concluded elections. The Civic Education started with the observation of JPRC Sunday held on 5 th February,

4 d) Thanksgiving Sunday The Presbytery observed Thanksgiving Sunday on 2 nd April, A total of Kshs1.2M was realized in the Presbytery. e) Moderatorial Visit The Presbytery held Moderatorial visit in the four Parishes as follows:- 4 th March, Parish am - Parish pm 18 th March, Kiambururu Parish am - Parish pm Important leadership issues were discussed centered on accountability, performance and spiritual growth of the members. The results of these Moderatorial visits has made the Parishes to perform in the year under review and spiritual growth has been witnessed. f) Capacity Building Seminar of Ministers and Elders This seminar was held on 20 th May, 2017 at. The topic was the importance of Benchmarking in our Church (Presbytery). The Elders were taken through this topic by a qualified Professional. The Presbytery held other training session on Benchmarking culminating to the Presbytery having its own benchmarking document and the one for the parishes. g) Launching of Benchmarking Documents The Presbytery held the launching on the Presbytery Benchmarking Document together with that of the parishes on 19 th September, The Chief Guest at the launching ceremony was the Secretary General Rev. Peter Kania Kariuki. He spoke on the importance of benchmarking in the Church and the benefits thereof and encouraged Elders and Ministers to make use of the document and the results will be encouraging. h) Sponsored Schools Thanksgiving and Prize-giving Day The Presbytery was able to sponsor this day on 19 th June, 2017, where the participants were Pupils, Students and Teachers from our Sponsored Secondary Schools. The Primary Schools were also not left out including our special schools for the Physically Challenged and Hearing Impaired. 137

5 The Kiambu County Education Officials, and Githunguri Sub-County Education Officials, graced the occasion. The Presbytery invited the Principal Secretary of Education Dr. Belio Kipsang who was represented at the Ceremony by Mr. Amos Mering the Director of Special Needs Department in the Ministry of Education. The Schools were awarded Prizes, the Best Pupil Performers and Teachers were awarded for their exemplary services. The gesture was well appreciated by the schools, their Boards of Management, the Officersfrom the Ministry of Education, the Pupils and the Parents and supported this issue of Partnering between Church Sponsored Schools and the Ministry of Education. OTHER PRESBYTERY INVOLVEMENTS i. G.A.C 2017 The Presbytery participated well in the 2017 GAC held at Alliance Girls High School(Kikuyu). The Presbytery received a trophy of being among the top 10 Presbyteries in MMF contribution clearance in the financial year 2015/2016 and certificates for MMF contribution and clearance of all Parishes. ii. Mission work outside Kenya The Presbytery participated in the Uganda Mission in July, 2017 courtesy of BSR/Mission desk by sponsoring one person and other contributions. The Presbytery also participated in the Moderatorial dinner courtesy of BSR/Mission desk whereby and Parishes presented their donations. The Presbytery has been buying the way Magazines since its inception to promote mission work courtesy of the BSR/Mission desk. iii. Regional Project at Ruiru The Presbytery is a shareholder in the central Region Rental Houses Project at Ruiru and its contributing towards building her shares. iv. Staff Capacity Building One Evangelist Eva. Peter Mbugua Wainaina from Kiambururu Parish was sponsored to undergo for further training at the Lay Training Centre where he graduated on 9 th December, Presbyterial Groups Restructuring The Presbytery arranged for the exit of the groups in a well laid manner such that it was peaceful and had a fellowship meeting with the Presbyterial groups on 13 th August,

6 The Presbytery facilitated meetings to the Presbyterial groups to oversee the sharing of the resources that the groups held in the Presbytery. Their accounts were closed and money held in their accounts cascaded down to the Parishes. Specific Functions i. Three inductions of newly posted Ministers in the Presbytery were successfully done in the year under review. 1. Rev. Nancy M. Caure Parish -15 th January, Rev. Shem Githinji - Parish 2 nd April, Rev. Dr. Joseph Wairi - Parish 14 th May, 2017 ii. We also had a Church Dedication for the P.C.E.A Raiyani Church in Parish which was done on 29 th October, 2017, where the occasion was graced by Rev. Peter Kinyanjui representing the Moderator of 21 st General Assembly. j) Solemn Functions The following elders were promoted to glory and the Presbytery conducted the burial ceremonies: 1. Eld. Through their Parishes they have all observed their weeks as programmed in the Church Calendar and have met their obligations as follows: I. P.C.M.F Kiambururu They observed their week from 30 th October, 2017 to 5 th November, 2017 and they raised money for both Presbytery MMF and their activities such Participate in pastoral care Programme in sponsored schools. Visited the sick for prayers. They organized Rite of Passage for 29boys Maintained Uji Programme for the Church School Children. Had men fellowship parish sports day. Held a monthly rotational prayers in all their congregations. Held seminars for all men in all congregations. Had a successful week and managed to clear their MMF. Held 2 successful Parish fellowships for all men. Provides funds towards Uji Programme for the Church School children every Sunday in all congregations within the parish. Supported the families of PCMF members who have passed on within the year during burial in both financially and spiritually. Met once per week for prayers and fellowship at congregation s level. Held a very successful rite of passage. Held pastoral visits in our sponsored schools within their parish. Held a commissioning service on 29 th October, 2017 where 7 men received cards, 13 men received badges and 10 men received ties. 142

10 Attended recruitment service at Anmer. They observed their week where they visited the sick and prayed with them. The started the Uji Programme for the Church school children. They organized for the rite of passage. II. Woman s Guild Kiambururu They observed their week from 29 th May to 4th June, 2017 and they raised money for both Presbytery MMF and their activities. Organized several seminars for the members. Visited the sick for prayers. Attended fellowships on weekly and monthly basis. They sponsored two children in academic; one girl in Mumbi Girls and one boy at Polytechnic. Paid their MMF. Participated in all parish activities and assisted when needed. Held seminars for girls in Primary and Secondary school and appreciated them during prize giving days. Held a parish council retreat for three days at Mombasa Held an alternative rite of passage for 42 girls. Held rotational prayers once every month and once every each of their congregations. Had a successful week and managed to clear their MMF. They donated Kshs.250,000 to the Home for Physically Challenged children. Held an alternative rite of passage for the girls in class joining class eight and those joining form one in 2018 which was held on 6 th December, They have held seven monthly rotational guild services in their congregations. Met every Thursday for prayers and fellowship at congregation s level. Visited the sick and needy in their parish and prayed with them and gave them financial support. Visited bereaved families of their members and gave them The Spiritual and financial support. Held inter-congregationcouncils festivals at Mitahato and later a seminar facilitated by Dr. Zipporah Wanjiku Gichuhi from Kenyatta University which were held on 27 th July, They offered Hospitality services during Parish functions. 143

11 Held Prayers during the world s prayer day and invited teachers and students from our sponsored schools. They observed their week where they visited the sick and prayed with them. Held a parish guild seminar on 20 th February, 2017 which was graced by the Presbytery Council and Presbytery Moderator. Held sports on 18 th may, 2017 where they noted a well-participation They organized a seminar for girls between 9year 13 years On 19 th November, 2017 they have Woman s Guild Commissioning where 62 members received headscarves and 31 members received badges. III. Youth Fellowship Kiambururu Held retreats and several seminars for capacity building. Observed their week which was successful. Held parish games and music festivals Held parish youth rally at P.C.E.A Giachumi. Held leaders retreat Held two parish kesha and P.C.E.A Miguta and P.C.E.A Giathieko. Have been actively involved in praise and worship in parish functions. Had a successful week on 7 th May, Held a rally at P.C.E.A Anmer on 13 th August, 2017 which was attended by 188 youth members from all congregations Four members gave their lives to Christ within the year Had a seminar at P.C.E.A Anmer on 1 st August,2017in the afternoon covering spiritual growth, relationships and courtship. Visited the sick and the needy among the members for spiritual support and financial support. Held ball games at P.C.E.A Mitahato on 19 th August, Held three Parish fellowships in all congregations. Have been actively involved in praise and worship during church gatherings. Held a parish kesha at P.C.E.A Raiyani on 7 th July, Hosted a Presbyterial Kesha at P.C.E.A Ngewa Church on 17 th March, Held a youth seminar as P.C.E.A Ngewa Church on 18 th August, 2017 Observed their youth week where they did a door to door mission calling on youths who do not attend church and visited the elderly for prayers. 144

12 IV. Church School Kiambururu Teaching programmes still effective every Sunday in all congregations. Held a seminar Had a retreat at crayfish Naivasha Consoled families and donated to families who lost their children. Visited the sick teachers and children Active in children teaching as per the Programme. Observed their day on 3 rd December, Sponsored four teachers to the 2 nd National Conference at Jomo Kenyatta School, Nakuru. Visited P.C.E.A Anmer Church School, where they donated cash, books and charts. Have been teaching church school as per the Parish Programme. Visited Mukubu Primary School and School for Hearing Impaired Secondary School for spiritual nourishment and encouraged them to work hard. Visited church school sick children, teachers and official, supporting them financially and spiritually. Teaching children in the way of Christ as they grow. Organizing a get together for children. Nurturing the children in both spiritually and morally. Taking care of young children between the ages of 4-14years. V. Boys and Girls Brigade Kiambururu Visited the sick for prayers Held parade during the parish convention Held a battalion in the parish in the month of February, 2017 Has trained the officers and NCO s at St. Linda s Ruiru. Held officers battalion at Miguta Held officers retreat at Blue-post and Oldonyo sabuk. Registered new brigade officers. Held quarterly parades at all our congregations Held a brigade camp Visited officers and brigade children. 145

13 They have got 70 girls, 60 boys and 50 officers. Observed brigade Sunday on 13 th August, 2017 Visited the sick and the needy children for fellowship and financial support. Bought a tent as an income generating project. They hire tent and chairs. We had NCO s and officers basic training at St. Linda s Secondary school in April. They participated in talent displays from congregational to regional level. Conducted prayers, drills and other social and spiritual activities. Started badge work in preparation for commissioning. Held a retreat on 1 st November, 2017 They had a seminar on 21 st November, VI. Evangelism Kiambururu Observed their week on 4 th to 10 th September, 2017 Actively participated in organizing a successful parish convention 14 th to 16 th April, Held monthly intercessory prayers. Have been holding intercessory prayers. Held door to door mission in the Parish Held many Keshas praying for the nation before and after elections Organized a successful mission, convention and crusade. Organized and financed a successful Parish Convention as from 14 th to 16 th April at Gakoe Church. Participated in a Crusade at Gakoe Shopping Centre on 13 th April, Had door to door mission on 11 April in their congregations. Sent 60 missioners during convention held at Kiambururu Parish on 25 th to 27 th August, Visited P.C.E.A Anmer church four times on Sundays. They rotated for prayers and encouragement in the whole parish once a month. Visited the needy and the sick within the parish to pray, share the word of God and help them financially. Observed their week from 4 th to 10 th September, 2017 They were actively involved in Praise and worship during convention. 146

14 Making preaching programmes for the parish. Have an intercessory group that rotate monthly in their congregations. They assist in organizing parish convention every year in the month of April. They are involved in a mission work in their Parish. They participated in organizing the Parish Kigooco Night this year. VII. Health Board Gave first Aid and attended patients during the Parish Convention Attended a retreat at olive green Ruiru. VIII. JPRC Provided free first Aid services during parish functions by hiring a qualified nurse. Sponsoring congregational health professionals who gave health talks on Tuberculosis and cholera. Visited the sick members of our church some at home and some in hospitals and gave them financial support and spiritual nourishment. Visited some the schools within the parish for pastoral care. Donated six permanent metallic dustbins each congregations two. Observed their day on 15 th October, Held first Aid training for twenty members facilitated the Red Cross. They sensitize members on various decease, prevention and other intervention Tests blood sugar and high blood sugar. Deworming children from 5 years and below. Held Civic Education in all our churches before elections. Visited some schools within the parish for pastoral care Had a civic education to enlighten members on election matters which was conducted by qualified facilitator. Visited bereaved families of their committee members and gave them financial and spiritual support. Visited the sick and the needy members within the Parish financial support and spiritual nourishment. 147

15 Visited P.C.E.A Anmer church and gave them financial support and educated them on JPRC matter. They bring the spirit of nationalism, collaboration and co-existence. Have been actively involved in social economic issues as well as political issue especially in this election e.g. civil education to the church members. IX. Christian Education Kiambururu Participates in sponsor care Programmes Held one TEE Held seminar Held prayers for candidates of both class 8 and form 4 Bought success cards for the year 2017 candidates. Visited four schools within the parish for pastoral care. Visited sick members and assisted them spiritually and financially Sponsored three (3) students for secondary education at Ndireti Secondary school and also gave presents to performing teachers and student. Bough Kiswahili bibles to three schools to promote national language Bought exams for some schools through the congregation education committees Visited Primary School for devotion. Educated people on drugs and substance abuse during parish convention. Awarded prizes to the best candidates in class eight and form four. They issued success cards to candidates every year. 148

16 13.0 ACHIEVEMENTS. Have put in place the Presbytery Monitoring and Evaluation committee for Benchmarking. Participated in the National Evangelism and Mission work in Uganda. The Presbytery sponsored one person in July, Presbytery participated in the Moderatorial dinner courtesy of BSR/Mission desk. Promoting the Way Magazine, by buying and selling copies. Have a well-managed pulpit in all the four parishes with a Preaching Programme. Had successful TEE graduations in which was held on 18 th June,2017 and Parishes,P.C.E.A Mitahato Church on, 12 th February, 2017 and Gakoe P.C.E.A Graduation which was held on 9 th December, 2017 Parish had a Kigooco night prior to the anniversary, which was graced by Kameme FM Team on 3 rd March, 2017 and Celebrated 1 st Anniversary on 5 th March, Thanksgiving Sunday of 2 nd April, 2017 was well observed in the parishes apart from Parish that held theirs on 9 th April, A Total of Kshs.1, 200, 000 (1.2M) was realized in the Presbytery. All the four parishes held a three day Convention, which uplifted the spiritual lives of the parishioners as follows:- Held their Convention on 14 th -16 th April,2017 with theme from Isaiah 3:10 had their annual Convention held on 28 th -30 th April, 2017 Kiambururu Held their Convention on 14 th -16 th April, 2017 held their Convention on 21 st -23 nd April, 2017 Benchmarking monitoring and evaluation committee The Presbytery has put in place the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee on benchmarking. Educational seminars were held in all parishes for various group in the parishes i.e. for the youths, woman s Guild, PCMF, Church School teachers and children, Education Committees among others. Other seminars conducted in the Parishes were as follows: 149

17 Kiambururu Leaders seminar on7 th January, 2017 Leaders seminar Leaders seminar on 25 th November, 2017 Single Mothers/Widows seminar on 7 th October, 2017 Single Mothers seminar Leaders seminar on 11 February, 2017 and 30 th September, 2017 Young parents seminar for the between 30 and 45 years. Youth seminar on 17 th April, 2017 Single Parents seminar on 17 th June, 2017 Widows and Widowers on 24 th June, 2017 Praise team on 17 th June, 2017 Intercessors and Preachers. Pastoral work was also carried out in all the parishes where pastoral visitation to members, the sick, the Elderly was done and had Holy Communion together. Pastoral care programmes to sponsored schools in our parishes has been carried out which strengthened the relationship of the students and the Sponsor. Civic Education was carried out in all the parishes through the JPRC committees. Environmental awareness and concern was done in the parishes where trees were planted and cleanliness exercises held in some areas of concern. Parishes have sponsored students in education as follows: has sponsored 1male and 1 female students in High School in secondary and Mumbi Girls High school respectively. They are also sponsoring 1 male in Polytechnic and another male student in Presbyterian University. Parish have sponsored 2 students (boy/girl) in Secondary, 2 male students in Polytechnic, and 1 girl in Miguta Secondary school 150

18 Parish are sponsoring 2 music students in Conservatoire of music Kenya and 1 Male student in Presbyterian University. Parish Held three day retreat for Elders in Mombasa. The Presbytery organized a Presbytery Prize-giving day on 19 th June, 2017 to award students and teachers who performed exemplary well in K.C.P.E and K.C.S.E in year Also, awarded schools both Primary and Secondary which had performed well in the National Exams CHALLENGES CHALLENGES Gender Imbalance in leadership Generation Gap Increase of single families and orphans Financial Constraint Rural /Urban Migration Drugs and substance abuse and radicalization Cultural Practices (eg. Mburi cia Kiama) Poor Church service attendance STRATEGY TO OVERCOME Seminars have been held to Encourage Men to participate in Church activities. Mentoring the boy child. This has been done in seminars in, and Involving youth in leadership. Parishes are encouraging the youths through seminars. Encourage the youth to own their mother Churches through seminars. It is being done in all the parishes. Civic education to all members to take care of orphans, widows &widowers. Seminars to help Maintain families. Seminars on self-awareness to be enriched on how to live and protect oneself from lifestyle deceases. Education on tithing and giving in all Parishes. Members have been taught in all our Parishes on tithing and the need of giving and the need of giving and there is improvement. Needs attention by the whole Church Educating through seminars and pulpit to sensitize members. The Parishes carried out these seminars to the youth, notably in,, and Kiambururu. Addressing through seminars, Pulpit and open gatherings. Organizing pulpit exchange and encouraging members to attend services Introduction of modern technology in the church e.g. screens, Musical Instruments etc. 151

19 FUTURE PLANS - Capacity building for our leaders. - Develop a strategic plan to be able to cope with the benchmarking. - Encouraging Congregations through Parishes to complete their unfinished Sanctuaries and also build Church School classes. - Enhance spiritual growth through conventions, bible study programmes, discipleship and missions. - Encourage civic education through the JPRC. - Improve the services in the presbytery dispensary to attract more clients and to maintain a healthy community CONCLUSION We are grateful to God for all what he has done to us. This far he has been our Ebenezer. We would like to thank all our four Parishes for the continued support given to us throughout the year. It s our hope and prayer that we will rise to greater height in the coming year.
