1 Sept 19 - Sept 25 ISSUE DAYSTAR UNIVERSITY Human Resource Department Holds Induction for New Employees Faculty and staff listen attentively to the Vice Chancellor during the training Daystar University through the Human Resource department held induction for the newly employed faculty, staff and part-time lecturers on 13th September, The training which attracted over 80 participants was held at Daystar Academic Centre (DAC) auditorium, at the Nairobi Campus. The orientation themed Faith and Work, was aimed at familiarizing the new faculty and staff with the culture, and the vision and mission of Daystar University. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Timothy Wachira took the participants through the topic; spiritual disciplines: the benefits, pitfalls and the application to Daystar University. His training was pegged on the objective of creating an understanding of the need for personal and corporate commitment. He called on the new employees to be committed to the vision and mission of Daystar University in discharging their duties. Speaking at the same event, the DVC Academic Affairs, Rev. Prof. James Kombo reiterated the call to practice Christian faith in all aspects of life. The Christian values we stand for should be displayed in our area of expertise; first reflected in ourselves and then in those we interact with, said Prof. Kombo. He further said that one way of walking together is keeping the cardinal point of encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. Let s be known for the Christcentered values and spiritual disciplines, he urged the new members. On his part the University Chaplain, Rev. Steve Nduto urged the new employees to reflect their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. The presence of the Lord gives immunity and protection as long as we walk in it and re-examine our theology to understand our faith, he said. The participants comprised of faculty members from various schools, and staff members from Administration, Finance, Library and Corporate Affairs departments, as well as part-time lecturers.

2 Daystar Compassion & Care Center (DCCC) to hold Awareness Week Daystar Compassion and Care Center (DCCC) would like to inform the Daystar community of the upcoming Health Awareness week, which will take place from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th September, 2014, in Athi River Campus. Several activities are lined up for you, including: DCCC Chapel, to be held on Tuesday 23rd September, Off-campus visit to ACK Church to sensitize community on health on Wednesday 24th September, Community service to Daystar Mulandi Primary, which will take place on Thursday 25th September and finally, on Friday 26th September, DCCC will host student peer counselors representatives from Daystar University, St. Paul s University, Nazarene University and Catholic university, courtesy of Students Campaign Against Drugs (SCAD). Nairobi Campus Health Awareness week will take held from 6th to 10th October, You are all invited to participate in the activities.

3 COMMISSION 2014 Conference Fellowship of Christian Unions (FOCUS) invites all students for Commission 2014 conference. Venue: JKUAT Dates: 28th December 2014 to 3rd January The conference takes place once in three years and attracts delegates from over 200 countries. Charges for students are Ksh. 4,900. How is it possible for one to talk on a retrogressive topic like primitive oaths and covenants today? It is this author s view that wrestling with the question whether the Old Testament covenant is relevant for theological- ethical understanding of covenant amongst African believing communities from an Old Testament approach is necessary. The author shows certain African terms can be used to explain covenant. The biblical explanation of a covenant shows it is an oath and there are places in the Bible where a covenant is an oath. Specifically, the author pursues a narrow context among the Kamba people of Kenya showing that they make oaths which are covenants.
