3 September 2, 2007 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three FR. BOB S UTTERINGS Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time It is hard to believe that we are once again celebrating Labor Day. Where has the summer gone? Traditionally this weekend is the time that we as Americans celebrate the end of summer. It is a time to take a respite from work to have an opportunity to think about the dignity of our labors and be thankful for what that labor produces for us and our country. The readings this week are all about humility. How many of us can honestly call ourselves humble? Humility can be a difficult concept for many of us, especially because we live in a world that celebrates and encourages us to want nothing but what is bigger or better than what our neighbor has. True humility is about being honest about ourselves and our gifts. We are reminded today that we have these gifts because of grace along with hard work. Let us never forget that God has graced us and that is a pure gift from him. Compendium Catechism of the Catholic Church I would like to share some of the richness of our Church teachings, that we find guiding us from the official Catechism of the Catholic Church, in my Utterings from time to time. The Catechism provides us all with the opportunity to review the teachings of the Church and continue to grow in wisdom and faith. Item number 431. WHAT PURPOSE DO THE PRECEPTS OF THE CHURCH HAVE? The five precepts of the Church are meant to guarantee for the faithful the indispensable minimum in the spirit of prayer, the sacramental life, moral commitment and growth in love of God and neighbor. Item number 432. WHAT ARE THE PRECEPTS OF THE CHURCH? They are: (1) to attend Mass on Sundays and other holy days of obligation and to refrain from work and activities which could impede the sanctification of those days; (2) to confess one s sins, receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation at least once each year; (3) to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season; (4) to abstain from eating meat and to observe the days of fasting established by the Church; and (5) to help to provide for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. Item number 433. WHY IS THE CHRISTIAN MORAL LIFE INDISPENSABLE FOR THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL? Because their lives are conformed to the Lord Jesus, Christians draw others to faith in the true God, build up the Church, inform the world with the spirit of the Gospel, and hasten the coming of the Kingdom of God. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Compendium---Catechism of the Catholic Church (Washington, D.C.: USCCB Publishing, 2006). Adoration and Benediction for September Please remember that since tomorrow September 3, 2007 is Labor Day we WILL NOT HAVE Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament this month. Have a restful and peaceful Labor Day. Abundant Blessings Always, Father Bob

4 Page Four Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2007 Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2007 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A surprising party Imagine for your next dinner party, instead of inviting family and friends, you collect all the street people in town, the homeless and the panhandlers, and bus them in for the gathering. And rather than your A-list neighbors and coworkers, you include the folks from the nursing home. Throw in a few inmates from the correctional facility and you ve got yourself a gospel party. Sound far-fetched? Well, consider this: Jesus invites us to his banquet. What do you suppose that has to say about us? When we understand the humble truth about ourselves, that we are sinners, we re much more likely to love others the way God loves us. TODAY S READINGS: Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a; Luke 14:1, 7-14 When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 FEAST OF GREGORY THE GREAT, POPE, DOCTOR Out of your comfort zone Like a lot of saints, Gregory (c ) was born to wealth and nobility and pursued a downwardly mobile career from there. When his father died, he gave his property to the church, established seven monasteries, and joined the last one. After becoming a priest and working as the church s representative in Constantinople, he came back to Rome and to his great dismay was elected pope. He asked the emperor to reverse the election, but to no avail. He really only wanted to be a monk. A person like Gregory shows how sometimes circumstances ask you to rise to the occasion and do more than you thought you would have to do. When that call involves serving others, though, it s always a worthy one to answer. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Luke 4:16-30 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he had anointed me. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 - Inside job There are times when all of us feel challenged by the gospel message, as it throws the spotlight on our most hidden secrets and wounded places. These hidden spots, like the interior demon in the gospels, may squirm and call out to Jesus, in essence, Leave me alone! I m afraid to change! Yet when we observe Christ s healing power in action, we come to realize that we are healed, rather than harmed, by giving up the demon within. Ask Jesus today to help you heal, from the inside out. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11; Luke 4: he came out of him without having done him any harm. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 - Who s crazy now? In the 1966 film King of Hearts, a Scottish soldier is ordered to locate and defuse a bomb left by the retreating German army. The townspeople have fled, and the only remaining occupants are the patients in an insane asylum. The movie ends with the question of who is more insane, the inmates of the asylum or the soldiers on the battlefield. Demons are easy to dismiss they re crazy, right? But how is it that the demons know that Jesus is the Son of God while everybody else still isn t quite sure? Maybe they re really the consciousness in us that holds a truth that we will not admit. What truth am I denying, the acceptance of which will set me free? TODAY S READINGS: Colossians 1:1-8; Luke 4:38-44 Demons also came out of many, shouting, You are the Son of God!... because they knew he was the Messiah. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6 - Fishing for people You have to wonder why Jesus chose Peter to be his fisher of men. In all the stories about fishing, Peter never seems to catch anything. And when he does, it s considered a miracle! Likewise his nautical skills: Every time he s out in the boat, it nearly sinks. And twice Peter ends up in the water, definitely not where the captain wants to be. So how did Jesus expect him to catch people? Easy. The same way he caught fish: with divine intervention. None of us can accomplish our mission in this world without the help of God. But together we can take in a miraculous haul. TODAY S READINGS: Colossians 1:9-14; Luke 5:1-11 Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 - Go on, try a new idea If we re honest, we must admit that saying, The church has always taught is sometimes code language for I have always understood. Most of us don t want to consider that there s more to learn than what we accumulated by the end of our formal religious instruction. So we cling to ritual and rule, which offer a reassuring pattern to our lives that doesn t have to be rethought on every new occasion. We order the old wine, confident of what our experience will be. But what if Jesus has reserved the finest wine until later? Our reluctance to be challenged may mean we might miss out on the best. TODAY S READINGS: Colossians 1:15-20; Luke 5:33-39 No one after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, The old is good. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Queen has arrived On today s liturgical feast, placed nine month s after Mary s Immaculate Conception, we rejoice in the arrival of the New Eve to the world. Joachim and Anna first lifted up their newborn, looked to her eyes, and could know that she was free from sin. Though the tiniest and weakest among humanity, she was its queen even then. As is recited in the Byzantine prayer, Today the barren Anna claps her hands for joy, the earth radiates with light... for she who is Queen and the Father s immaculate bride buds forth from the stem of Jesse. Imagine, therefore, that the greatest of the world s revelations was first disclosed in this newborn girl. TODAY S READINGS: Micah 5:1-4a or Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 1:1-16, This is an account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C. 5 September 2, 2007 Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five Welcome Sunday Next Weekend Welcome to all St. Cletus newcomers. Registration will be available next weekend, September 8-9, after the 5:00pm Saturday Mass and the 7:00, 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00am Sunday Masses. Please stop by the back of church, say hello, and become members. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: Classes for begin on Sunday/Monday, September 9/10. All of our registered families should have received registration materials, class assignments, and a school map via the mail. If you have not received your packet, please contact the Religious Education Office. Parents are invited to escort their child to class, meet the catechist, AND join us for our Opening Prayer Service in Morrissey Hall. After prayer, stay and visit with friends until our dismissal. The staff of the parish religious education program is looking forward to welcoming you! Can you spare us some faith and time? How would you feel if your child were denied religious education because of a lack of volunteer teachers? This is what will happen if we do not have a few volunteers (3 to be exact on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm) to teach our children about our faith. Our class size is limited to 12 students, and last week we had a surge in registrations. Unfortunately, we have a waiting list of students, not because of lack of space, but because of LACK OF INTEREST AND CONCERN on the part of adults. Please call me if you are able to assist. Help Needed! Some of the students in our Religious Education Program have special needs. These students require an aide during class to assist them in learning and in doing activities. If you are willing to share your time with a special needs student, please call me. Aides can be high school students through senior citizens. Perhaps you do not feel comfortable teaching but would love to assist a student in classroom activities - this is the perfect avenue for your time and energy! Aides are needed on both Sunday mornings and Monday evenings. Registration If you have not registered your child/ren for religious education classes yet, please stop by our office or go on-line and return your forms as soon as possible. Remember, new students also need to present a copy of their baptismal certificate. Also, to receive a sacrament, students need to participate in a program for one year in advance of the sacrament. Classes are filling up; do not delay! R.C.I.A. Please join us if you are considering becoming a Catholic. The fun and discussion begins on Wednesday, September 26, Room 200 in the Education Building. The first three weeks of the program are called the Period of Inquiry. Please bring your questions, fears, concerns to our first meeting and listen with open ears and a caring heart to see if this program feels right to you. We hope that it does and you will return. If you are uncomfortable, or do not believe what you are hearing, then you are under no pressure to return. Give us a try. Please call me for more information!
