2 Rethinking Missions What does it mean to be involved in missions or to be a missionary? If asked, most of us would probably think of our work at The Way or of our Guatemalan Mission Team, and rightfully so. I feel blessed and proud that our churches have two wonderful mission programs that allow so many of us to participate in bringing the love and truth of Christ to the world. I am blown away by the generosity of our congregations and community as it pertains to both of these impactful missions. So many of you give sacrificially of your time, energy, talent, and treasure to make these missions a reality. Most of this sacrificial giving is completely unseen and unknown. As your pastor I want to say that I see you, I thank you, I am proud of you, and God bless you for all that you do! However, proud and impressed as I am with our dedication to the Way and to Guatemala, I would like to be so bold as to challenge us to rethink what it means to be missionaries. The reality is that we are ALL missionaries. Every single Christian is called, equipped, and commissioned by Christ to go and make disciples of the whole world (Matthew 28:16-20). Christians are, by definition, a missionary people, and we make our biggest mark as missionaries in our daily lives. Every interaction that we have at work, at the store, in the bank, with our family, out in the community is a missionary moment. It is a chance for us to let the light of Christ shine in a dark and dreary world. Please do not hear me saying that the Way or the Guatemalan Mission are not important. As I said, I could not be more proud of those ministries and I stand behind them and support them 100 percent. My desire is to remind us of the call of Christ that our whole lives are to be, in a sense, missionary programs. We are to live, speak, and witness in such a way that people will look at our love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, forbearance, and self-control and think to themselves, I don t know what they have, but I want it. As Jesus Himself said: 14 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16). Let us live into this call together and transform the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Thank you all for your love, prayer, and support. You are all more of an encouragement to me and my family than you realize. I am humbled and grateful to be your pastor. Yours in Christ, Pastor John This Photo by Greetings from Phoebe Phoebe would like to share her mailing address while she is away for the winter and enjoying the warmth of Florida. 3 REMEMBERING ART MONTGOMERY Prayer - A Divinely inspired support system between God and God's people. Please keep in prayer: Family, friends and folks we know who are ill, undergoing rehab, chemo, surgery, treatments, recouping or just in need of our prayers. The Women and Men of our Armed Forces who are working for World Peace Family and Friends in Nursing and Health Care Facilities World disaster victims Families and friends of the victims of violence Our Sincere Condolences to the Recently Bereaved Families of: Arthur Montgomery Tuesday Evening Bible Study Tuesday Evening Bible study will begin on February 12 th. Then topic for this group is Jesus Among Other Gods by Ravi Zacharias. This group will meet from 6 to 7:30 PM at the Schuylerville UMC. All are welcome to join the group. Sunday, January 27 we gathered to say goodbye and remember Art. It was wonderful to see our Sanctuary full of his family and friends participating in the service that he had planned himself. Pastor John conducted the service, with Pastor Virginia reading the familiar Scripture. His favorite hymns, especially the Naval Hymn, and In the Garden brought tears, knowing how much Art loved each one. The choir honored his memory with Quiet Witness, an anthem that described our Art s life perfectly. The Communion rail was strung with the delicate crocheted snowflakes that Art s wife Gini created many years ago and have decorated our Christmas tree since her death. That tree has always held a memorial heart for her, and next year, one for Art will be right beside it. Art s son Gary wrote a very kind note thanking QSUMC for giving Art a beautiful memorial and for the added personal touches we are known for. Of course, the reception that followed brought raves, as QSUMC does have some talented cooks and bakers and we love to use those skills to show how much we care. Art s family and friends were very appreciative of the time they were able to have together, and the warmth showed to them by all. Art was laid to rest in the Saratoga National Cemetery the following day. We have now said our final goodbyes to a faithful friend, but he will be remembered forever. As per his wishes: Memorial Gifts can be made to QSUMC. These will be acknowledged to the family. Bonnie Greenfeld 3

6 A Loving Memory Gift We want to share a loving memory with you from June The SUMC church family blessed in prayer a beautiful and colorful afghan that was presented to Pastor Ben and Alyssa Latke in appreciation of their ministry before their new UMC journey to the Rochester area. The afghan was tenderly hand-made by Mary Anne Schutz with Yvonne Woolley s heartfelt guidance for the representation of colors cable-stitched throughout the afghan. Yvonne shared with Pastor Ben and Alyssa, The afghan has a story to tell! Each color represents parts of the SUMC family. The cable stitch indicates how we are entwined and work together to serve our Lord. The afghan carries our love and prayers for both of you as you continue your ministry at the Victor United Methodist Church in Victor, NY. Each strand of represented colored yarn was weaved within a card and signed by members to help Pastor Ben and Alyssa remember their walk here and sharing their faith with us. The representation of each beautiful yarn color cable-stitched within the afghan: Yellow: Praise - Choir - Acolytes Praise the Lord with Music and Light! 8 Abide With Me Henry Lyte wrote the words to Abide With Me (#700) as he was dying from tuberculosis in He was 54 years old. We don t hear much about tuberculosis today. In some ways, the good old days weren t really that good. Lyte s life had not been an easy one. He was placed in a boarding school and promptly abandoned by both his parents at the age of nine. Fortunately, Dr. Robert Burrows, was the school s headmaster. He was a kindly family man with two sons and three daughters of his own. Burrows took Lyte into his home and paid for his education. Lyte proved to be an exceptional student. At the age of 16, he won a scholarship to Trinity College in Dublin. He planned on entering the medical school but felt the calling to become a minister. He entered the Divinity School where he distinguished himself as a scholar. He was awarded the Chancellors Prize for English Verse three years in a row. He graduated first in his class of 24 students. Lyte was ordained in 1815 and served as an assistant pastor of St. Munns Protestant Church in Taghmon, Ireland. He developed lung problems that his doctor blamed on overwork and the cool damp climate. He was ill but his fortunes were about to improve. Rev. Lyte moved to France where the warmer climate improved his health. He was happily married to Anne Maxwell, a pastor s daughter and returned to Trinity College in Dublin to receive his MA degree. His father-in-law left a small fortune to the Lytes when he died in They lived on an elegant 41-acre estate in Brixham with beautiful views of the ocean. Lyte never forgot the kindness of Dr. Burrows. He used part of the inheritance to repay the doctor for the cost of his education. Henry Lyte s final church charge was near his home in the fishing village of Brixham on the south coast of England. Most of the congregation were fishermen. He wrote a book of poems and prayers for the fishermen and frequently visited the docks when they returned with their catch. He served this church for 24 years. Lyte was a driven personality. He worked long hours for his church, community and friends. Eventually, his health deteriorated and at the age of 46 he became very ill. His wife took over more of his responsibilities in ministry and in the home. Bad times went to worse with the death of their infant daughter who Lyte had named after his own mother. Each winter, Lyte left his family and moved to a warmer climate creating financial hardship for his family. His wife must have been a saint. My own wife said that there is not a chance of me leaving for warmer climates without her. Lyte started writing Abide With Me while living on his estate. He continued to revise the hymn at his winter home and eventually mailed the completed work to his wife. Lyte knew he would never return from that trip. He died in a hotel in Nice, France. Fortunately, he was attended by another clergyman who was staying at the hotel. A memorial service was held in Brixham by Lyle s son-in-law who was also a minister. Abide With Me was sung for the first time at the service. You wouldn t have recognized it. Lyte s original tune was changed to a more familiar one called Eventide. Abide With Me was originally written with eight verses. Verses 3, 4 and 5 are usually omitted today. Our hymnal uses the shortened version. Like most children, Henry Lyte was very attached to his mother during the first nine years of life. She was his protector. She taught him his prayers and Bible verses. He never got over her departure. It s not exactly clear why she left. Records show that she and one of her sons died several years later in England. 8

9 Below is an excerpt from a poem Lyte wrote about his mother: Stay gentle shadow of my mother stay; Thy form but seldom comes to bless my sleep. Ye faithless slumbers, flit not thus away, And leave my wistful eyes to wake and weep. O! I was dreaming of those golden days When, will my guide, and pleasure all my aim I rambled wild through childhood s flower maze And knew of sorrow scarcely by her name. Those scenes are fled, and thou, alas, art fled, Light of my heart, and guardian of my youth, Thou come no more to fancy s slumbering bed, To aggravate the pangs of waking truth. Or if kind sleep these visions will restore Oh, let me sleep again, and never wake no more. It s no wonder that Henry Lyte won the Chancellor s Prize for English Verse Hymn Historian, Tim Lagoe Sources: Henry Francis Lyte His Life and Times by Evelyn Miller (the internet) Cyber Hymnal (the internet) Then Sings My Soul by Robert Morgan Schuylerville UMC Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner 4:30 to 7 PM A pancake dinner will be held on Tuesday, March 5 th at SUMC. 10 QSUMC Christmas Party It s never too late to hear about the happenings of our church! In case you missed it, or were there, and forgot how much fun it was, here s your update. Quaker Springs, at Pastor John s urging, held their first no work party in a long, long time. If you have as long a memory as I do, you will recall the events held to congratulate ourselves on a good run of Third Saturday Suppers. Skits and funny awards, a pot luck and just relaxing for an evening. Who can still see Donna Dodd Thomas with all that kitchen paraphernalia wrapped in her updo? Well, I digress This party was, I think, supposed to be a bit calmer. The Fellowship Hall was all decorated for Christmas by Tim and Deb Lagoe. We each provided a special dish, supper taken care of. Wonderful conversation, civilized behavior, suitable for the two littlest guests, the preacher kids. Then a game of Bible Jeopardy, emceed by Pastor John. from there, decorum went out the window as the wild group quickly demonstrated that intense Bible Study was desperately needed. I am proud to say the group I was in won, whether from being more learned, or just louder is up for debate. Nobody wanted the contest to end, Deb just ran out of questions, plus dessert awaited and the little ones were going to be late for bedtime. Quaker Springs Choir Plans for 2019 February is Black History month, we really enjoy the month of February at Quaker Springs for our Christian Calendar proclaims this as Black History month. We select our favorite Afro-American hymns and try new ones from the new black hymnals. For the first hymn on Feb 3 rd, we will sing a favorite of our Dean Deuel Swing Low Sweet Chariot and you can plan to attend our service for the rest of the month to enjoy three more special Hymns. With Ash Wednesday on March 6 th, our time of Lent begins. We shall hope for a much quieter weather month of March and look forward to everyone joining us for a prayerful time before we celebrate Easter. God Bless Marion C. So, it has been determined that this is an event that will become tradition. We can ask that a new game be invented, or those of us that were there can be insufferable as we get everything right---this time. Make it a priority in your holiday planning to attend. It gives a lot of insight into the people that you sit near on Sundays. Bonnie Greenfeld 10

11 FELLOWSHIP HALL Should we come into the 21 st Century here at QSUMC? I love our church, it s history, beauty, and now the new Fellowship Hall. It is finished, but kind of bare and plain, so when the girls were discussing what to put on the walls for interest, I thought of using one small space to put a flat screen TV. When we have large events, funerals, weddings etc., the overflow sits in the Hall. Yared has, for these times, set up a closed circuit tv system. This entailed bringing in a tv, plus his equipment. Having a tv and DVD player ready to go will make this easier and also provide an easy way for people to show their pictures at events held in the room. This adds value to those considering renting our space. The girls have discussed a Movie Night, an exercise or walking group. Those that travel could do an evening of sharing their experiences. Laurie Griffen knows how, as probably others do, to make a program to keep the church calendar on display during Fellowship. Flat Screen are no longer a major purchase. We didn t intend to turn this into a budget breaker. Maybe there is someone who has traded up to a larger screen and has the smaller one to donate? We need to make sure anything we acquire can accommodate the closed-circuit equipment so we will consult with Yared. Your thoughts and ideas are always welcome. Bonnie Greenfeld 8 th Annual Plant Sale Quaker Springs United Methodist Church 466 Route 32 South, Schuylerville May 18 th 9 A.M. 1 P.M. (Rain or Shine) QSUMC ANNUAL PLANT SALE I know it doesn t seem like it, but Spring will come, and, I hope, lots of little perennials in your garden beds that you will be happy to share with us to sell May 18 th from 9 to 1. This event has grown to be another success story in Fund Raising for our church. It costs nothing because of the generosity of our congregation gardeners, their friends, neighbors and old customers that are willing to give some time and energy into digging and potting to pass on, for a small fee, the bounty of beauty that they enjoy at home. Please add this to your calendar, be one of the diggers, ask your neighbors if they will give you a plant or two from their beds. We have return customers every year, having new varieties will keep them coming back. I have a collection of pots that are donated to us each year, so call if you need some. Volunteers to work that day are always needed! We get swamped the first hour! The night before is set-up, tagging and pricing. We have also had customers that have enjoyed going home with garden décor. If you have something you have grown tired of, never liked, or too much of a good thing, we will be glad to find a home for that too! Please use these next weeks of cold winter weather to plan what you can do to add to the success of the day! P.S. Nothing goes to waste, we donate every year to help beautify Hudson Crossing!
