1 Loves, serves and worships with PASSION ST. JOHN S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH A Stephen Ministry Church 104 Newberry Street, NW Aiken, SC This Sunday, Dr. Tim will explore the nature of singing our faith and theology. As he and I discussed which hymns to choose for Sunday s service, and in considering hymns to choose for any Sunday, I recall the writing of the British novelist, poet, and lay theologian C.S. Lewis (d. 1963)*. Lewis, who became a Christian as an adult, first considered church attendance optional. His initial attitude was that he could go it alone, staying home and reading books on theology. He soon realized that the essence of what it meant to be a Christian was to commune with others, taking the Sacrament and participating in other acts of worship. During the first visits to church, he writes that he really disliked the hymns of the church, calling them fifth-rate poems set to sixth-rate music. He describes a gradual awakening, through worship, when his conceit just began peeling off as he got to know other church members who had different life experiences and perspectives. He describes one instance of standing and singing a previously detested hymn and noticing an older man, clad in a dirty pair of boots, singing the hymn with complete devotion and faith beaming on his face. At that self-revealing moment, Lewis says he realized he wasn t fit to clean the man s dirty boots! August 19, 2018 August 19, 2018 The Israelites Escape From Egypt Exodus 11:1-12:36 Jesus sets us free. We hope that all those who started school have had a wonderful first few weeks and will be praying for those who begin school tomorrow! August 19, :00 Picnic at O dell Weeks BROTHERHOOD Wed., August 22, 7:00 p.m. upstairs in the Faith Center Through the singing of hymns that may not be your style or familiar to you, you have a chance to show and live grace, as you watch the face of a fellow congregant light up as they sing a hymn that, as a child, they sang while sharing their hymnal with a grandparent, or the hymn they sang through tears as they proclaimed the power of the resurrection at a loved one s funeral. As Christians, we are called to be in community with those around us, and the singing of hymns is a way to show that indeed, we are that community! In such moments, we are showing grace that is greater than our own personal taste! And, who knows, your entire viewpoint of the hymn may experience a transformation grace can do that for us!
