6 6 YOUTH PARISHIONER IN NEED OF YOUR ASSISTANCE My name is Myles Spencer and I am a Junior at Xavier High School in NYC. I am also a member of a group, named The Companions of Xavier Service program- CFX. CFX is about striving to be in solidarity with the poor and marginalized. Also, trying to understand what Jesus was asking of us when he said, Love your neighbor. In June, I will be spending one week with Rostro de Cristo in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I am honored to be one of only eleven students chosen to represent Xavier and my community on this trip. The week is about living together as a community centered on the person of Jesus Christ. The four cornerstones of community, simplicity, prayer and service are all important aspects of the week. Rostro de Cristo is a Catholic program whose mission is to provide spiritual and educational opportunities for people of faith, to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the people of Ecuador. The purpose of this immersion program is to live with and support the Ecuadorian people. We will be working in developing communities to inspire and reinforce the commitment of the participants. We will focus on service, social justice, and solidarity, not only with the people of Ecuador, but the world. One requirement of this trip is that we raise the funds necessary to travel through donations and fundraising. I am asking you for your assistance in helping me to fund my trip to Ecuador. I am trying to raise $1,000. No donation is too small. All contributions will be greatly appreciated. 7 7 BLACK HISTORY MONTH SAINT CHILDREN S WORSHIP CORNER Turn the Other Cheek " St. Moses the Black was a thief, murderer and adulterer who through the grace of conversion was transformed into a pacifist, priest and martyr. Born in 330, he was a slave of a government official in Egypt who dismissed him for theft and suspected murder. A large, imposing figure, he became the leader of a gang of bandits who roamed the Nile Valley spreading terror and violence. Attempting to hide from authorities, he took shelter with some monks in the desert near Alexandria. The dedication of their lives, as well as their peace and contentment, deeply influenced him. He gave up his sinful ways and joined the community. While he struggled a long time with monastic discipline, he became renowned for his mercy and zealous love of God and neighbor. At some point, he was ordained a priest and became the leader of a colony of desert hermits. At about age 75, about the year 407, word came that a group of renegades planned to attack the colony. The brothers wanted to defend themselves, but Moses forbade it. He told them to retreat, rather than take up weapons. He and seven others remained behind and greeted the invaders with open arms.
