1 Dear Children, Parents and Staff, Today at assembly we heard the story of the loaves and the fishes. Jesus showed his care for others and his ability to rise to the occasion. their 24 Character Strengths to achieve our stated goals: When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, This is a remote place, and it s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food. Jesus replied, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish, they answered. Bring them here to me, he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. This is a story about the fact that if there is a will there is a way. At Holy Family the staff use the word efficacy which means the ability to produce a desired result. We speak to the children about using We all have these 24 character strengths and some are more dominant in each of us than some others. According to the survey, my dominant strengths are Perspective, Social Intelligence, Zest and Forgiveness. You may see me differently. Today s assembly was a true celebration of all that we stand for at Holy Family. We celebrate our Diversity, Our Many Cultures, The Talent of our Children, Our Creativity, The Support of our Community and the commitment of our Staff. In particular I wish to acknowledge our EAL Staff Magdalena Moise, Kaine Coad and the wonderful Hong Nguyen. Thank you and all the team at Holy Family who made this week of learning so successful. 10 FROM THE APRIM Saint Matthew On Friday, September 21 st is the Feast of Saint Matthew. Little is known about St. Matthew, except that he was likely born in Galilee. He worked as a tax collector, which was a hated profession during the time of Christ. According to the Gospel, Matthew was working at a collection booth in Capernaum when Christ came to him and asked, "Follow me. Matthew answered the call and became a disciple of Christ. From Matthew we know about the Life, Miracle Stories and Teachings of Christ through his Gospel. His book is the first of the four Gospels in the New Testament written in around 41 and 50 AD. He wrote the book in Aramaic in the hope that his account would convince his fellow people that Jesus was the Messiah and that His kingdom had been fulfilled in a spiritual way. It is thought he departed for other lands to escape persecution sometime after 42 AD. According to various legends he fled to Parthia and Persia, or Ethiopia. Nothing is recorded of Matthew's passing. We do not know how he died, if his death was natural or if he was martyred. Matthew was a tax collector and is therefore the patron saint of bankers. The Bible is God s Word 13 Another reason why we continually thank God for you is that as soon as you heard the word that we brought you as God's message, you welcomed it for what it really is, not the word of any human being, but God's word, a power that is working among you believers. (1 Thessalonians 2:13) 16 All scripture is inspired by God and useful for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teaching them to be upright. (II Timothy 3:16) 2. The Bible was inspired and given by God 21 For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spirit that moved them. (II Pet 1:21). All scripture is given by inspiration of God.. (II Tim 3:16). 3. The Bible will guide us through life Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalms 119:105) Jesus replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4) 4. The Bible is the source of truth 17 ( Jesus said), consecrate them in the truth; your word is truth.(john 17:17) 15 Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who has no need to be ashamed, but who keeps the message of truth on a straight path.(ii Tim 2:15). 5. The Bible is the pathway to find God 17 But it is in that way faith comes, from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ (Romans 10:17) 6. The Bible will show us what is missing in life 12 The word of God is something alive and active: it cuts more incisively than any two-edged sword: it can seek out the place where soul is divided from spirit, or joints from marrow; it can pass judgement on secret emotions and thoughts. (Hebrews 4:12) A quote: The Bible's place in Australian life has been diverse and changing, sometimes surprising and very often debated. But since its introduction in the late eighteenth century, its influence has been far-reaching. Its imprint is extensive and intricate in areas from politics to the arts, the environment to social relations. The Bible is well and truly under Australian skin. (Meredith Lake) For our reflection: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8) (To be continued) Fr Francis
