18 2. Cultural Studies Rabbis and Disciples in First Century Palestine (i) Rabbis emerged with Judaism around the 4 th Century BC. They studied the interpretation of the Torah; the word Rabbi = Master. (ii) Applicant to be a disciple found their Rabbi and requested to join the Rabbi s yeshiva community of disciples. (iii) Rabbis examined applicants and would take on only the very best and only one or two. (iv) Disciple committed themselves to follow and become like their Rabbi, submitted to him.

19 2. The Disciples of Rabbi Jesus (i) Jesus ministered as a Rabbi, interpreting the Jewish scriptures since the age of 12 (Lk 2). (ii) Jesus went out searching for disciples (iii) Jesus does not restrict himself to the most able people instead there is a place for the uncertain, the unskilled and the sinful. (iv) Jesus expects a whole hearted commitment as the disciple follows and submits to him as Lord. (iv) Rabbi Jesus proclaims the good news of the unlimited grace of a loving God.

Disciples panic they were in great danger. 4. Jesus calms to the seas; asks disciples - where is your faith? 5. Who is this? (a repeated theme as narrative leads up to Simon Peter offering an answer in Lk 9).

22 Jesus and the Twelve Committed to slow and devious learners The Lukan narrative binds the Mission of the Twelve and the Feeding of the 5000 (Lk 9.10) intended to be read together for mutual illumination. Look for aspects of the story which do not fit within the world of the unfolding narrative. Why are the apostles arguing with Jesus? What is the point of the twelve baskets of leftovers? The Key question in a narrative reading is what happens next? Look at Lk which reveals all.
