1 UDDINGSTON OLD PARISH CHURCH OF SCOTLAND Charity Number SC MAGAZINE September 2017 How has your week been? Pastoral Letter Has it been joyful, has it been challenging, has it been hectic or has it been quiet? In the manse at the moment it s all of the above - returning from annual leave, organising son as he prepares for college and working around the noise of workmen as they tackle the wet rot in the basement of the manse by removing beams and joists. There are times when I wish I was back on the Paddleboard in Cornwall. Just me pushing against the gentle waves as I headed out from the beach. There was no rush, no panic. I was able to paddle at my own pace, pause when I wanted and change direction if I needed to without any consequences. For those few hours that was my Sabbath moment. It was a moment when I did not need to wear the workaholic s badge of honour. It was a gentle reminder of what I was missing in my diary of life; those Sabbath moments within our week; those moments of space just to be. I remember the days when a Sunday was church and family time. There were very few shops open, transport into town was scarce. It was a day of rest snuggled up on the couch watching television or playing board games around the table. Depending on the weather it was a day for walking to the park and playing on the swings. It was a time of bliss. There was no hustle and bustle as it is today. No one felt lazy, no one felt like they should be doing something else. I recognise however that life has changed even in the last 10 years especially in ministry. We are challenged more, people are demanding more, and if we don t seem to be busy then we are deemed as lazy. Remind me where it says that all of us have to live our lives at a constant 24-7 pace. What happened to our Sabbath? What happened to us finding pockets of quietness? I don t believe that it has to be a Sunday that we hold sacred in our week or that it has to be a whole day. If we are able to find pockets of Sabbath within our week, snippets of time that will allow us to rest, recharge and be restored then let us claim them back. Let all of us have some downtime without the feeling of guilt or being deemed as idle. Let s spend those moments pottering around, walking the dogs, or snuggling up with a cup of coffee and a good book. Let s find some quiet time in our busy world and pause as the world rushes by. As Jesus says: Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 3 Page 3 Uddingston Pride Update As usual it has been a busy summer for Uddingston Pride. Between 7th and 10th June, we held a Craft Fayre in Park Church, and this proved to be a great success. We had more applications for tables than we had anticipated, so a certain amount of rejigging of the layout was necessary to squeeze them all in. We had good support from local people, who were happy to come in and view the many and varied craft items that were for sale, and enjoy a cup of tea in the Church hall. Everyone who came to the Fayre seemed to enjoy their visit, and the crafters were very happy with what they were able to sell. We are most grateful to all the exhibitors, and all those who came along and supported this new event, and helped to boost our funds. A special thanks is due to the ladies who so ably managed the tea room. In mid July, we held an Open Garden event, when visitors were able to visit and hopefully enjoy three very different private gardens, as well as the newly replanted station garden. We were blessed with a dry day, so the many visitors who came along were able to socialise in pleasant surroundings, and enjoy a cup of coffee, and some delicious home baking. Again, the Group s funds were boosted by this successful event. Then we had to put the finishing touches to the Village prior to the visits by the judges in Beautiful Scotland and Britain in Bloom, in early August. We were happy to take the judges round our Village, which we think was looking really well, and we hope they were pleased with what they were shown. Highlights of the two tours included the War Memorial, the Station, Crofthead Park, and the Churches, which always look great and are a credit to their respective gardeners. We also took them to Bothwell Castle, where one of our members gave them a potted history of the Castle, and brought them right up to date with the various events that take place there nowadays, such as schools educational visits, group tours, and wedding photographs. It s good to think it is so well supported by locals and by visitors from all round the world. Then at the Golf Course, the Club General Manager gave them a brief review of the environmental aspects of the care and attention required to maintain such a green space to the very high standard of Bothwell Castle GC. The judges also greatly appreciated meeting with some of the many children who use and enjoy Crofthead Park. We won t know the results of the competitions until the Award Ceremonies in early September and late October. But, all the judges certainly seemed to be impressed, it would be just great if we were to get two Gold Awards that would be an exceptional result. Here s hoping We are always looking for volunteer helpers, so if you are able and willing, feel free to get in contact. SR Food Bank Request During September, we will be collecting for the Foodbank. A list of urgently required items is given. Unfortunately, stocks are once again dwindling as more people are having to use this service to get by. Please give generously (as always). There will be buckets for the collection at the front of the church. If you want to see what the Foodbank is all about please visit hamiltondistrict.foodbank.org.uk or their Facebook page. If possible like and share this The Foodbank will also pass on any cutlery, kitchen utensils, crockery and pans you no longer need. Please speak to Liz Vasey for further information. Many thanks.
