3 JUNE 17, 2018 PAGE 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In Chicago, there was always an unwritten law that if you did a favor for someone that required you to go out of your way, then you held a marker which you could exercise, making a demand on them in return. The marker was based on a relationship or duty. Last Friday, I made my way early in the morning to Volk Field at Camp Douglas to give a presentation to senior leadership at a prayer breakfast for the Wisconsin Air and National Guard. The marker was held by the military. I really didn t have the time, and had to rearrange my schedule. However, I proudly wore the uniform of a United States Army reservist for 23 years. I have always felt that my years in the military was payback, in a small way, for living in a country that secures the freedoms we enjoy through the sacrifices made by so many. I began my address by making a public confession: in my 23 years in the military, I was not a very good soldier. I often paled in comparison to the professionals who I was privileged to serve. My boots were often not shined, my pants failed to have the proper creases and, at times, I even forgot to attach my rank to my BDUs (Battle Dress Uniforms) that is, the green camouflage. I joked, I guess I was the Bob Uecker of the military services. In the early 1980s, I was in Schweinfurt, Germany, a newbie to the military environment. It was during the Cold War, and American German bases would muster to the front of the Soviet lines in a show of resolve that America stood ready to defend the free world against those who might infringe upon their liberties. As awesome as the display of weaponry was, weapons that could devastate towns and villages, I quickly came to appreciate that the real strength was in the men and women who wore the uniform. Their discipline and character was impressive, and the power at their disposal was used not for suppression, but rather to insure freedom. I learned, even in those exercises, the resolve necessary to defend the country, and that their families held their breaths every time the alert was sounded and the Army would move. These families knew that their husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and friends, were offering their lives as a statement of a nation built upon the sacrifices of those who have gone before them. They were willing to pay the ultimate price for the good of our country. I knew the commitment of my father and uncles to the country as they served in WWII, but would the men and women of today have the same commitment and resolve to defend the country as did the so-called greatest generation? In my experience in the many units I served, my answer would be a resounding yes. My years in the military have reinforced the notion that those in the military are the greatest advocates of peace. The Armed Forces of the United States have never been warmongers. But, the desire for peace should never be mistaken for the lack of resolve to defend the freedoms we enjoy. I responded my marker as a sign of my respect for the soldiers who insure our freedoms. The words of Chaplain Denis Edward O Brien, USMC, echoed in my thoughts: It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of press. It is the soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the organizer, who gave us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. No greater love has one than to lay down their life for a friend and you are my friend, if you do what I command you: LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Most Reverend Jerome E. 4 JUNE 17, 2018 PAGE 4 CHRISTIAN FORMATION CORNER Kostyn's Mission Trip to Kenya Fundraising I will be traveling to Kitale, Kenya for a month-long mission trip with Vicentian Lay Missionaries from August 1st-31st, 2018! In Kitale, myself and a group of four others will facilitate a camp for children ages 6-16, many of whom face hardship in their communities and home life. If you are interested in finding out more, check out VLM's website: In Search of Young Adults! SPIRITUS is seeking Catholic men, years of age, to join the SPIRITUS missionary team this August. SPIRITUS ignites the faith in thousands of young Catholics through retreats and parish youth ministry each year! Missionaries live in community and travel to parishes and schools throughout Wisconsin; they receive training, formation, spiritual direction, lodging, food, a monthly allowance, health insurance and a $2,000 stipend upon completion of the 9-month program. 5 11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 5 Mission Intern with the Riverwest Food Pantry Riverwest Food Pantry's Mission House in Milwaukee is now receiving applicants ages for their year-long missionary internship which includes room, board and a monthly stipend. Interns live together in Catholic justice formation in the neighborhoods of Riverwest and Harambee. Interns are trained in assisting the poor, running community meals, urban gardens, food rescue, learning non-profit and neighborhood development leadership skills!
