1 St. Peter s Lutheran Church May 2016 Dear Friends at St. Peter s, Last month I wrote about the March 6 event when the members of our Church Council, Board of Elders, School Ministry Board, Operations Board, St. Peter s Foundation, as well as the directors of our ministry departments, and their spouses came together to hear more about our 2020 Vision and the five ministry initiatives that accompany our 2020 Vision. At that event, those in attendance literally signed on for the road toward the 2020 Vision. In the second week of April, all 82 people who make up our St. Peter s paid staff, who serve in a variety of positions, heard about the 2020 Vision and the five ministry initiatives and spent time asking clarifying questions. They, also, have added their names to joining us in the journey. After worship, at all four services, the weekend of May 12 to 15, we will be sharing the 2020 Vision and five ministry initiatives with all who are present. The vision statement, as well as the ministry initiatives are the result of nearly two years of listening to the people of St. Peter s and soaking those comments in prayer. As I indicated in the April newsletter, over 2300 comments were recorded from our ministry forums that took place several months ago. The vision statement sounds simple but it is RICH in meaning: The People of St. Peter s reflect the heart of God. The people of St. Peter s refers to ALL of us all of us who claim St. Peter s to be our church home. It refers to those on staff, those who participate in worship on a regular basis, those who in serve in a ministry of St. Peter s, those who are a part of our school family, even those who we may not see as often as we d like but who still consider St. Peter s their church home. The People of St. Peter s reflect the heart of God: By walking alongside one another, By demonstrating the heart of a disciple, By reaching beyond our campus, With a personalized approach. As we move forward, we ll take time to unpack what those four statements mean. Our five ministry initiatives, which you ll hear more about the weekend of May 12 to 15, are means to the end. They are not our mission, nor our vision. They are means to help us achieve our vision. The initiatives you will hear about in May will be the focus of our attention from July 2016 through June In the next couple of months we will be building teams to work on our five initiatives. Once you hear about the initiatives, if you would like to be a part of any of those teams, please contact our executive director of ministries, Mike Hinckfoot or me. In addition to unveiling our 2020 Vision and ministry initiatives in May, we will be hosting a congregational CELEBRATION in the late morning and afternoon of Sunday, May 15. The entire congregation is invited to a meal that will take place on the north lawn of the church. Please bring a lawn chair, if you re able. Those who attend worship on Thursday or Saturday that week are encouraged to come back for Sunday dinner (you have to eat anyway). And those who come Sunday morning are invited to stick around. It s sure to be a great day. And, please pray for nice weather! I m thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the ministry of St. Peter s and for the many people who make up our congregation. Be sure to join us for this very special weekend. 3 LIFE LINK 3 Discipleship Ministry The Journey Living Life Together as Disciples In a large church, finding a smaller group of friends to share life together is important. Life Groups are valuable places to study God s Word, but also to cultivate loving relationships. These life groups offer a chance to get to know others well and live out our Christian life together. Several life groups are now available on Sunday morning or Wednesday night. If you need to be connected with a life group or if you have a life group that would like more participants, then contact George (812) x2128 or gdenholm@stpeters-columbus.org Spring Sunday Education April 3-May 22 Spring class options Please be a part of our Christian education classes for all ages from on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am. We change the adult courses 4 times a year. The classes planned for the next session include: Bridges Witnessing to Muslims Noel Taylor (Choir Room) More Muslims have come to Christ in the past two years than in the previous Come learn how God Himself has made these fields ripe for harvest, and where you can join Him with surprisingly little training. Everyday Parents Can Raise Extraordinary Kids Buzz Clore (Room 2223) Parents can learn to help their children be internally motivated instead of relying on parental prompters in four areas: Doing what s right, Dealing with wrongs, Being honest, and Caring about others. This video series will teach parents about the biblical concept of the conscience and encourage its development. Experiencing God Mike Malinsky (Room 2161) God is always at work Christians are more effective as they watch for where He is working and join Him. Join Pastor Mike in seeing how planning on our own then asking God to bless us is not as productive as experiencing Him where He is already working. Steadfast and True: of Peter and of Paul (continued) Vicar Steve Hackmann (Room 5104) Looking at I Peter and Colossians, we will discuss remaining strong in the faith in the face of suffering and continually leaning on the truth found in Jesus for security and confidence in this life. Bible Investigation Class (continued) Mark Teike (Room 2164) This class is the first step in our new member series, but it is also a great review of basic Christian doctrine. This will include the topics of creation, redemption, prayer, and more. Discovering Your SHAPE for Ministry will be offered April 17, 24, & May 1 during this BIC. Rehearsals: Wed., Apr. 27, May 4 & 11; 6:15-7:45pm. Worship Services: May 14 & 15 (New Song); May 19 & 22 (Classical Praise) Thank You Greetings from Ann Arbor! I am sending this quick letter as an enormous thank you letter! The support that the church gives me is so immense and I could never thank you enough for it! If there s one thing I ve discovered on my journey of faith, it s that Jesus is still alive and well, both here at Concordia, and back home at St. Peter s. I have officially applied to the Pre-Seminary Program, meaning I have officially started my journey to become a pastor! I also am continuing to study my music in guitar, piano, choir, and possibly next semester even learning some organ! With the music, over the summer I have been given an incredible opportunity to intern at Carmel Lutheran as a Worship director. I will be interning under Victor Minetola so keep me in your prayers as we move forward with that! On that note another thank you is in order because it is such a blessing to be able to come back home and be able to lead music and play at New Song. Any time I have doubt about the path that God is leading me on, I come back and play and the way the Holy Spirit moves with music just overwhelms me. Please continue to keep me in your prayers and may God bless you! Conner Forbes Volunteers Needed!! We need your help with the coffee and donut service!! Strict Requirements of Service: 1. Depending upon how volunteer recruitment goes, your commitment would be once every 8 weeks on Sunday morning from 7:30am-ish to 9:45-ish.and feel free to head to the 8am service while the coffee is brewing. Text or call Leigh Denny (812) or her at ldenny@its.jnj.com Pastoral Care Ministry Retirement Pastor Mike Malinsky Join us for a retirement reception after each worship services May in the narthex and from 9:30-10:30am in room Pastor Mike will be preaching at all four service, Thursday, May 7pm, Saturday, May 6pm, and Sunday, May 8am & 10:45am. Come and show your love and appreciation for his service. Stephen Ministry Is it Your Time? As King Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:1, there is a time for everything. Depending on the time in our lives, each of us may find ourselves rejoicing or mourning. In John 13:34, Jesus gives us a new command: Love one another. Paul writes in Romans 12:16 that an aspect of love is to rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. Are you at that time in your life that you can devote yourself to loving others by training to become a Stephen Minister? In the Stephen Ministry training class, you will learn practical and effective ways to love one another and to minister to those who may either be rejoicing or mourning. The next class starts on Sunday mornings in August. Is it your time? For additional information about Stephen Ministry at St. Peter s, please call or Pastor Galligar, or call April Niewedde at
