the Resurrection story The Church of the Resurrection began in 1990 with the dream of launching a church that would reach thinking people who were not actively involved in a church, help them see how the Christian faith could change their lives and how they, in turn, could change the world. Today Resurrection is one of America s fastest growing churches and the largest church in the United Methodist denomination in this country. Indeed, we are one church in four locations, with more than 19,500 people worshipping, studying and serving at Resurrection s four campuses. LEAWOOD Roe Avenue, Leawood, KS In October 1990, 100 people attended the first worship service, which was held in the McGilley Funeral Home Chapel. Since that time, The Church of the Resurrection has launched hundreds of ministries, including: Matthew s Ministry, formed in 1993, which now serves over 130 special needs children and adults and their families each week. Countless Mission Ministries designed to have local, domestic or global impact, including food drives that collect over 150,000 pounds of food annually to feed the hungry in our community; and mission trips to Joplin, Missouri, the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, and overseas trips to Honduras, Malawi, South Africa, Russia, and Haiti. Our Group Life Ministry, where nearly 3000 of our members are finding authentic community along with spiritual growth and real friendships. Leadership Institute, an annual conference attended by church leaders from across the country, designed to revitalize the church and inspire church leaders to bring renewal to their local churches. 4 RESURRECTION WEST (K10-K7) W. Valley Parkway, Olathe, KS Our second campus was launched in Western Johnson County, Kansas in In less than 10 years, this campus built their first building and began planning for a new space to make room for the more than 900 congregants, including over 350 children who call Resurrection West their home. RESURRECTION DOWNTOWN KCMO 1522 McGee, Kansas City, MO In 2009, our third campus launched to serve the needs of the community in downtown Kansas City, MO. Resurrection Downtown has been dedicated to reshaping ministry in the heart of the city, changing lives and transforming the community. Nearly 1,000 people worship with Resurrection Downtown each weekend, in five different services at two locations. RESURRECTION BLUE SPRINGS 601 NE Jefferson Street, Blue Springs, MO Resurrection Blue Springs became the fourth Resurrection campus in This growing congregation of more than 300 worshippers is developing ministries, programs and a sense of community and mission in Eastern Jackson County, Missouri. 2 Coffee with the Pastors

our beliefs When we refer to the church, we aren t talking about physical buildings, but a community of believers. We believe the church exists to be the body of Christ the physical presence of Jesus Christ in the world. Every believer is a part of the body of Christ. Our primary aim is to do God s will, and we strive to follow Jesus commandments to love God and to love our neighbors. We readily acknowledge that we are imperfect, but that through God s forgiveness and grace, we can experience lives filled with hope and joy. OUR METHODIST HERITAGE We are proud to be part of the United Methodist Church. Methodism traces its roots back to John Wesley, an Anglican priest in the Church of England in the 1700s. John and his brother Charles intended to revitalize the church by forming small groups that met together regularly and followed a methodical pursuit of personal spiritual growth and a radical love of neighbor. Methodism first spread to Ireland and then to America where it officially became its own denomination in Today United Methodist membership stands at over 10 million worldwide. United Methodists are evangelical, but moderates rather than fundamentalists. We value intellect and modern science, while viewing the Bible as the authoritative guide for faith. Methodists have a passionate faith with strong convictions, but we also recognize the world is not always black and white. We are willing to ask questions, wrestle with difficult issues and do so with grace and compassion. We don t always agree on the answers, and that s okay. United Methodists have long been known for our emphasis on personal faith, lived out in concrete ways in the world. For United Methodists, social consciousness has always gone hand in hand with faith. We support mission and justice work locally, regionally and around the world. As United Methodists, we celebrate two sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion. These are the two sacraments which Jesus instituted in the gospels. Our United Methodist emblem is the cross and flame logo, officially known as the denomination s insignia. This symbol relates our church to God by way of the Trinity: Christ (the cross) and the Holy Spirit (the flame). The flame has two other connotations: it suggests Pentecost when witnesses saw tongues as of fire on the day the church was born (Acts 1), and the two tongues of the flame represent the merger in 1968 of two denominations, The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection 5

OUR PURPOSE At The Church of the Resurrection, everything we do is designed to achieve this purpose. It is our reason for being. Our programs, classes and sermons are planned with this purpose in mind. We believe that achieving our purpose will result in the accomplishment of our vision for the future. To build a Christian Community where non-religious and nominally-religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians. OUR VALUES It is our desire to honor God through our work. We will do God s work with the qualities we most value: integrity, grace, excellence, relevance, authenticity, passion, humility, faith, inclusivity, commitment, joy and love. 6 Coffee with the Pastors

OUR VISION As people move from a point of being non- or nominally-religious towards becoming deeply committed Christians, their lives are changed in significant ways. This change, in terms of priorities, mind-set and attitude, lead them to want to make a difference in their communities and beyond. This sense of purposeful action revitalizes and energizes the church to make a positive difference in the world. Changing lives, transforming communities and renewing the church OUR JOURNEY In order to help members become deeply committed Christians, we sought to define exactly what that term meant. After much study and discussion, we determined that deeply committed Christians are on a lifelong journey of: Knowing God becoming theologically informed Loving God being spiritually transformed, and Serving God living out our faith daily in the world We recognize we will not reach perfection in these areas, but we strive to make continuous progress, committing ourselves to become more deeply committed Christians, one step at a time. The JOURNEY of faith is not meant to be a solitary journey, but is most effective when traveled within the context of authentic community with the support of the Church and fellow Christians. The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection 7

our membership expectations We have five expectations for membership. Each of these expectations is designed to help you continue your faith journey towards becoming a deeply committed Christian. We believe fulfilling these expectations will change your life in powerful ways, bringing you meaning and joy. Worship each weekend, in person when possible. Grow in your faith outside of worship through study or a small group. Serve by using your gifts and talents both inside and outside the walls of the church. Give in proportion to your income, with the tithe as your goal. Share your faith with others, through word and deed. WORSHIP Worship each weekend, in person when possible Attending worship weekly gives you an opportunity to re-center your life, give God honor and glory, and remember what is really important in life. In worship, you grow to KNOW God more deeply, and you express your LOVE to God. If you are sick or out of town, we encourage you to worship online at GROW Grow in your faith outside of worship through study or a small group. Taking a class such as Embark, Alpha or Journey 101, or joining a small group will contribute to your faith journey by helping you meet new people and make friends in the process (and knowing just one or two other people makes a church feel more like home) and by continuing to help you KNOW God through studying the Bible or other books that offer great teaching and insights. Small groups often grow to seem like families as strong relationships form, and the groups strive to KNOW, LOVE and SERVE God together. 8 Coffee with the Pastors

SERVE SHARE GIVE Serve by using your gifts and talents both inside and outside the walls of the church. Each of us is given spiritual gifts and natural abilities that we can use to serve others and glorify God. The church is the Body of Christ, and each of us is a member of the Body. We are all invited to carry on Christ s mission in the world, to meet the needs of the people. Whether you are gifted in teaching, helping, encouraging or something else, God is counting on you to touch the lives of others as you SERVE God. Give in proportion to your income, with the tithe as your goal. Giving regularly not only supports the work of the church, but also is your way of giving God priority in your life. One way to determine what people really care about is to review where they spend their money. Sometimes life circumstances mean we cannot give regularly, but when we are able to do so, it deepens our faith as we LOVE and SERVE God through our giving. Share your faith with others, through words and actions. We are called to share our good news with others. Often times we think this means awkward conversations, but it doesn t (and shouldn t) have to be like that. Sharing your faith with those around you, through word and actions, helps us grow deeper in our LOVE for God and others. The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection 9
