August Volunteers August Calendar From the Prayer Chain Mark Your Calendar! We will also be selling tacos throughout Community Conversations Planned Several local churches, along with the Community Coalition for Change (CCC), will sponsor Community Conversations on four Thursdays in August. These conversations will make use of a technique called Deliberative Dialogue and will feature the following four topics: August 9 Opioid Crisis August 16 Mass Shootings August 23 Immigration August 30 Energy Choices These conversations will begin at 7 p.m. at Cahoots and last until 8:30 p.m. The churches involved will offer a prayer service prior to each conversation at 6:30 p.m. The churches include FCUCC, St. Anthony s Catholic Church, Holy Family Episcopal Church and Calvary Lutheran Church.

2 P A G E 2 From the Pastor s Screen Community Conversations Pastor Deb Davis The goal is to take current issues and be able to discuss them with civility... A few weeks ago, I received a group e- mail from the Reverend Daryl Emowrey at Calvary Lutheran Church, asking if any clergy in town would be interested in collaborating on some community dialogue. Five pastors responded and met with Pastor Daryl Father Tom from the Episcopal Church, Father Bob from St. Anthony s Catholic Church, Pastor Traci from AUMC and I. Pastor Daryl explained his hope that together we could facilitate some Community Conversations making use of a process he had recently learned and has been using in his own church, Deliberative Dialogue. The goal is to take current issues and be able to discuss them with civility even when we disagree with each other and in that dialogue perhaps hear something new. Pastor Daryl trained several pastors and a member of CCC in that technique recently and we are now ready to offer four conversations at Cahoots on four Thursdays in August. (See article on page 1.) The churches will offer a 15-minute prayer service prior to each conversation beginning at 6:30 p.m.... also at Cahoots, which is optional for those who attend the 7-8:30 p.m. conversations. Besides all of that, these conversations will offer our churches a chance for collaboration and perhaps model for our community that even when we don t agree on some issues, we are able to be in conversation and truly listen to each other. We are all excited to offer these conversations and hope that all of you will be there to participate! And a big thank-you to Pastor Daryl for initiating this process! Blessings, School Supplies, Socks, Underwear Needed Cahoots Collecting School Supplies Cahoots will sponsor a back-to-school bash on Saturday, August 11, from noon to 6 p.m. Besides offering food and entertainment, we are hoping to assist families with school supplies for the upcoming school year. Crossroad Youths Needs The youth at Crossroad Child & Family Services are in need of new socks and underwear. Sizes range from youth size 6 to adult 3X. Most needed are the in-between sizes of adult and medium for both girls and boys. Several churches are being asked to help with this effort including us! Bring items to church and Marj Lilley will get them to Cahoots. We need headphones (not earbuds), wire-bound notebooks (wide-ruled), yellow #2 pencils (Ticonderoga), scissors (don t forget the lefties), crayons (8-16 packs) and pencil boxes. Both the girls and boys like the longer-leg underwear no granny underwear please! Plain colors are also preferred so there s no competition for the fancy ones. We will be collecting items through August. T H E G O O D N E W S

3 F I R S T C O N G R E G A T I O N A L U C C Ongoing Opportunities P A G E 3 agenda and no book to read! Just come for breakfast and fun conversation! each Tuesday at 12 noon. Join us for a look at the lectionary scriptures for the next Sunday. No-Book Book Club We are gathering for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays at the Village Kitchen. We have no Women s Book Study Women s Book Study will meet on Tuesday, August 14, at 2:00 p.m. in Pastor Deb s office. Soup & Scripture Pastor Deb leads a Soup & Scripture session at Cahoots Friday Prayer Group The Friday Morning Prayer Group meets each Friday at 9:00 a.m. at Cahoots. All are welcome to take part. Cahoots needs a group of folks to volunteer to provide snacks once or twice a year for MRT. If you can help, contact Nancy Krohn at Church Council Highlights Church Council met on Sunday, July 8, and the following items were among those discussed/ approved/reported: Worship and Music: Lynn Syler said special music will be provided throughout the summer, but there are still three Sundays to fill. It was nice to have Jeanine back at the piano. Christian Education: Jill Noyes reported that Sunday school will begin the week after Labor Day. She has gotten feedback from those who taught last year who are willing to participate this year. She plans to have two classes, one kindergarten through 4 th grade, and a second one for older children. Missions: Lois McEntarfer and the Peru Mission Team were commended for their part in the worship service. Lois is looking into a local mission for the church to support. Trustees Report: Veryl reported that Trustees need to meet with new Trustees, Sue Myers and Gayle Newton. He will build bollards to block cars from driving in front of the chapel. Mason House needs some updates before school starts. The Trustees plan to stripe the parking lot before winter. They continue to search for a new door for the chapel, which may be hard to find because of its unusual size. T & T Tree Service will trim a tree in the front yard. Dan Hammond is looking into repointing some of the bricks and stonework. Old Business: STEPS Program Use of Church Kitchen Rod reported that our insurance covers other groups while here. Claudia and her family will sponsor a taco sale, August 4, in the church parking lot in conjunction with the church s Parking Lot Sale. New Business: Claudia submitted a proposal from Kathy Armstrong for JDAI (Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiatives) requesting use of the entire downstairs of the church, including the kitchen. This program would bring in $500 a month during the school year, and $1,000 during the summer months. STEPS program will pay the church $100 a month. June made a motion to grant church usage to both STEPS and JDAI, with the understanding that the staff of these programs report quarterly to the Council and that they be renewed annually with Council. The motion passed. Claudia urged members of Council to review our church bylaws. Since the bylaws have not been updated since 2001, Claudia requested that a committee be established to take on this task. In addition to asking members of the congregation to serve, the following Council members volunteered to help with this project: Marj Lilley, Vicki Harris and Rod Lewis. Marv and Dawn Mays have prepared marketing materials for the church s display at Pride Fest. This includes a general informational tri-fold pamphlet. The next Council meeting will be Sunday, August 12, following worship. Thursday, August 9, the WordHouse folks will meet at Cahoots to join the Community Conversation. Join us as we engage in a Deliberative Dialogue on the opioid crisis!
