The Good News F I R S T C O N G R E G A T I O N A L U C C A N G O L A, I N A U G U S T On Monday, July 10, 2017 Dave Snyder, Debbie Fugate, Joann Lewis, Lynn Syler, and Lois McEntarfer traveled to Kokomo, IN, to help neighbors in need. We joined folks from Clay City and Lafayette UCC churches. Our efforts were coordinated through the IN-KY conference mission chair Mary Anna Speller. Our group helped at a home that at one time could have been condemned but was being completely renovated for a mentally challenged young man whose apartment had been destroyed in the tornado last year. We ripped out carpet, removed old boards and trash from the home, prepared walls for drywall among other things. It was a great day working alongside others to help someone in need. We will have an opportunity in late summer to help in Noble county. Flooding destroyed homes and they are in need of help. As soon as the work is organized We Help Others! Summer Picnics Continue Our summer picnics continue each Wednesday in August at 6 p.m. These are fun, informal evenings that provide a great opportunity to know each other better! Make it your goal to attend at least one picnic this summer! P A G E 2 From the Pastor s Screen Pastor Deb Davis Confirmation Class meeting for both youth and parent(s) will be Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 a.m. All youth who are 14 years old and above are invited to participate in our 2017-18 Confirmation Class from September, 2017 through May 2018.

Our theme for Confirmation will be Through Charity to Justice.

We will also be worshipping at other sites each month including the Jewish Temple in Fort Wayne, St. Anthony s Catholic Church, an African-American church and, on our trip to Washington, D.C., we will worship at a Mosque.

2 P A G E 2 From the Pastor s Screen Pastor Deb Davis Confirmation Class meeting for both youth and parent(s) will be Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 a.m. All youth who are 14 years old and above are invited to participate in our Confirmation Class from September, 2017 through May We will have a parent/youth meeting for those who will be participating on Sunday, August 20, immediately following worship; we will meet in my office. Through Charity to Justice. Our theme for Confirmation will be Through Charity to Justice. We will be doing a mission project each month and linking that project back to the teachings of Jesus, most especially his teachings from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew s Gospel. We will also be worshipping at other sites each month including the Jewish Temple in Fort Wayne, St. Anthony s Catholic Church, an African-American church and, on our trip to Washington, D.C., we will worship at a Mosque. Lois McEntarfer and I will be leading the classes and each student will be assigned an adult mentor with whom they will meet once a month, at an agreed-upon time. The class will conclude on Pentecost Sunday, May 20th, with Confirmation Sunday. On that day our confirmands will take part in the worship service and will be confirmed into the church... a wonderful celebration! If your young person is interested in participating, please be present on the 20th! Blessings, August Mission Project During the month of August we have a mission opportunity that will provide hygiene and school kits to families and communities in need around the world. Dave and Bonnie Snyder will be attending a conference in September and will deliver these kits which will then be distributed by Church World Service. A list of what is needed is on the Information Table and includes things such as hand towels, washcloths, bars of soap, toothbrushes, 24-box crayons, and unsharpened pencils. Let s see how many kits we can make! T H E G O O D N E W S

3 F I R S T C O N G R E G A T I O N A L U C C P A G E 3 News in Brief No-Book Book Club We are gathering for breakfast at 8 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays at Auntie V s - with no agenda and no book to read! Just come for fun conversation! Women In Black Women in Black will stand on Saturday, August 12, in front of the courthouse. Folk are invited to gather from 10 to 11 a.m. and stand in protest of war and domestic violence. WIB is an international movement to end all forms of violence. Soup & Scripture Pastor Deb will lead a Soup & Scripture session at Cahoots each Tuesday at 12 noon. Join us for a look at the lectionary scriptures for the next Sunday. Friday Prayer Group The Friday Morning Prayer Group meets each Friday at 9 a.m. at Cahoots. All are welcome to be a part of this group. Women s Book Study will begin meeting again in September. We will be discussing Anne Lamott s Plan B - Further Thoughts on Faith. Church Council Highlights Church Council met on Sunday, July 9 and the following items were among those discussed/ approved/reported: Treasurer s Report: Pledged giving is up to date and we have a positive balance at the end of June; a new copier is being purchased for the office. Deacons: The spaghetti dinner is set for September 20, the same evening as the Angola Car Cruise-In; Fugates will chair. Mission: Some will be traveling to Kokomo on July 10 for a mission work day. Christian Ed: Schedule for summer Sunday School is on the Information Table; Jill will talk to Brad about having the panic wrist band on Nursery personnel on Sunday. Pastoral Relations: Brad will have a 30, 60 and 90-day feedback review. Trustees: John will check with Bill about directional signs for the church; trustees are looking for a new contractor to replace the Mason House kitchen floor; permits for the parking lot project are time sensitive and this project needs to begin soon. Welcoming: Marj said new attendees Deb and Crane will be joining the choir in the fall; Marj also asked folks to show visitors where the Nursery, restrooms and children s activity bags are located. Worship and Music: Jill wants to look into the cost of a program that will put the words for Sunday s hymns onto the video screen instead of paying someone hourly to type them. Nominating: Claudia and Jill will begin to work on filling empty positions on the Council. Greg and Kathleen Burns will be moving so Kathleen's Deacon position is open; Greg s moderator position has been filled by moderator-elect Claudia Camargo; Jill Powers and Michelle Olson have agreed to be co-moderatorselect. Next Meeting: Council will meet on Sunday, August 20, immediately following worship. Submitted by JoAnn Lewis, Clerk Spaghetti Dinner is planned for Wednesday, September 20th.

Yearned for its coming. But when it did come I fought, resisted, ran, hid away. I said, Go home! I didn t know the fire of God could be more than a gentle glow or a cozy consolation. I didn t know it could come as a blaze. A wildfire uncontrolled, searing my soul, chasing my old ways, smoking them out.
