1 Honoring Our Legacy Serving The Future I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3: 14 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I ve talked openly about my struggle with my weight over the years and over the past year with the help of God and Dee s encouragement I ve been able to take off 10+ pounds. But if I m honest with you, it has taken a single-minded devotion to get there. It means exercising an hour a day 7 days a week. It means tracking my food intake and exercise on Lose It. It actually means fewer trips to Brusters. But I ve actually been able to reach my goal that once seemed impossible. The prize is improved energy and overall health, clothing fitting properly, and genuine satisfaction of reaching an important goal. I share this because I think a similar kind of single-minded devotion needs to be restored in our spiritual lives. When we dabble at our faith, squeezing in a prayer here and there, attending worship when we can, and serving occasionally, the results often are less than satisfactory. Like my weight, the scale would reveal my previous half-hearted efforts. If only we had a scale for our spiritual health. I want to invite you back as we return to our fall schedule and to make your relationship with Christ a priority. Start with 5 minutes of devotions reading your Bible and prayer, plan on being in worship each Sunday, and find a place to serve others. I can t think of anything more important or vital to your wellbeing both now and eternally. Just as I had to keep my focus, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus and not let the cares of this world distract us from nurturing our relationship with Jesus and one another. This month we will launch our capital campaign, Honoring Our Legacy Serving The Future. I believe that primarily it will be a time of spiritual renewal and will draw us all closer to God in our daily walk. We will lead you on a spiritual journey that is grounded in gratitude, revealed in prayer and lived out in faith. And we will all pray together, Lord, what do you want to do through me? This is a question that we need to ask new each day, as we seek to keep our focus on God and his will for our lives. I m excited about what this month will bring with many special plans for worship, a renewed emphasis on prayer, and seeing everyone back in their places as we return from our summer vacations and trips. Let s make sure we keep Christ first in our lives every day until we reach our heavenly goal.
